Started when he was 12? Who the hell would let a 12 year old cut their hair. Shaky old men and sharp scissors don't mix.

Good for him, nonetheless.

Put it this way: if Fark was confined to just New York state, it would have a "Newburgh" tag.

For a while there, instead of calling Grandpa "Grandpa," I stared calling him "Grandpappy." But he didn't like that, and asked me to go back to Grandpa. So I did, but I changed it a little. I put an "e" in instead of an "a," so it became "Grendpa." At first he didn't notice, but then he said, "What did you call me?" "Grandpa," I said. But then I went back to calling him Grendpa. Finally he just said to go ahead and call him Grandpappy, which I did, only I changed it a little bit to "Grendpeppy."

My barber is 71 and he's been cutting hair for 53 years. He lost his lease last year and had to start cutting out of his garage. He's awesome.

Does "HERO" really mean so little these days? I mean, c'mon...

That said, if I lived near him I'd go support him. Old men will have much more interesting things to say than the middle-aged women that normally cut my hair, and spend the whole time talking about their kids.

I used to go to a barber who was in his 80s. He'd been working (and living upstairs) in the same shop since 1957, and had his original barber's license, dated 1937, hanging on the wall. He gave two types of haircuts: crewcuts and the regular kind. His prices were based on his mood at the time of the cut, from $8.00-12.00 for a regular haircut, crewcuts an extra two bucks. He used witch hazel and Jeris hair tonic from a glass bottle, cut your hair with scissors, rather than electric trimmers (unless you went for the crew), and shaved the hairs on the back of your neck with a straight razor (which, by the way, is damn close to the awesomest feeling thing in the entire world). Great guy, so-so haircuts. He had a tendency to miss spots, so you'd usually walk out with a couple of long strands of hair in the back that you'd have to take care of yourself when you got home.

I walked by his place one day and thought that I should really go in for a trim, but I had someplace I had to be, so I put it off. The next night, walking home from a bar, I saw a sign on his door addressed "to Ernie's faithful customers" that said he'd died in his sleep, and thanks to everyone for the years of support.

I didn't get my hair cut for a little over two years after that, because I couldn't find another barber like him. Finally, with my hair down past my shoulders, I broke down and went into another barber shop a couple miles away. The barber there was in his 40s or 50s, and he was OK, but it wasn't quite the same. He said something about me really needing the cut, and I told him that Ernie Paul had been the last man to cut my hair. "What, were you waiting for him to come back?" the barber asked. "Actually...yeah. Kind of," I replied. We were both quiet a minute, then he picked up his scissors, finished my cut, took my fifteen dollars, and wished me luck.

That was 2005. I'm still looking for a new (old) barber.
