The Federal Government didn't even recognize it as a national holiday until the 1860's.

The Christian Anagram Association has been involved in fighting Christmas from day 1. I mean, hello:

Santa
Satan

Do they really have to spell it out for you people?

When I was a kid I had the narrator (Linus) role in our Christmas pageant. Did a good job too (despite completely crapping my pants with fear). Full house even. Compliments galore. And that's not easy from a house full of Lutherans.

If I knew then what I knew now...(scratches chin) Would I have had an agent negotiated and got me a percentage of the box office?

William Bradford, the first governor of the Plymouth colony, had a COW because people were taking the day off on 12/25/1620. Pagan holiday, to him.

As much as I despise the Puritans and their philosophy, they had this one right.

Now? Jesus threw the moneychangers out of the temple for the same reason. This ain't news, religious people have been after $ for a very long time.

Further, there's still plenty of Christians who won't celebrate Christmas, say "Merry Christmas" or anything of the sort.

Christ's-mass is un-Christian. It has everything to do with ancient pagan Saturnalia festivals and the utterly blasphemous Roman Catholic mass and nothing to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Plus, it lets Christ-hating people get a little "contact Holiness" with the Jesus that doesn't say anything. Most lost people can deal with the Jesus that doesn't say anything.

which flavor of "pagan" was that, again? The term encompasses all non-abrahamic religions. (the usual term for muslim is 'infidel', iirc)

even if you only count the european pagans from 100-1650AD, you're lumping a lot of radicially different belief systems in one pile.

Helldonkey 2007-12-14 09:27:16 PM

Oldiron_79 2007-12-14 09:28:33 PM
Fine, instead of celebrating Christmas, why don't the Christians start celebrating Pagan European religion and burn the Heretic Athiests at the stake for not Worshiping Odin and Thor. Or even better yet, the Blood Eagle (new window)

I thought it was more like the Catholics made the birth of Jesus fall on the Winter Solstice to try and convert more of them? Or something??

/anyway, you're right.

AtomicBurrito 2007-12-14 09:34:55 PM
not to start a whole arguement but christmas is actually a pagan holiday.
Think back to the 12 days of christmas december 24th was when the 3 wise men set off to find jesus in the manger. The trip took 12 days and they arrived January 6th. Christmas really is just a whole lot of propaganda so that the corporations can start off the fiscal year with a little loose change in their pockets rather than wait until the second quarter. Dont beleive me? research it.

Just goes to show how blinded the religions really are what does it matter if you beleive in the death of christ or his ressurection or whatever, its still christianity. Maybe people should just focus on their own religion rather than criticizing and picking at the flaws of other peoples beleifs.

Christmas is just one day out of the year like any other. The joy of America is that when it comes down to it, NO ONE has the authority to tell you how to spend that day except for you.
You want to spend it exchanging gifts with loved ones? Fine.
You want to spend it in church? Fine.
You want to spend it going out for a movie and chinese food? Fine. You want to go to work? Fine.
You want to spend it sleeping until 2 in the afternoon, when you wake up and take some bong hits? Fine.
We are all pretty much free to do as we please with our time every other day of the year, why act like this day is any different?

copper1861 2007-12-14 09:37:12 PM
In the Protestant "tradition", Christmas (Christ's Mass) has also been associated with the Roman Catholic Church. During the Reformation, many of the Reformed churches, especially the Presbyterians in England, rejected Christmas outright.

Even now amongst the conservative Presbyterian denominations in America, there is a bit of an intramural debate as to how (or even if) Christians should celebrate Christmas.

Personally, I lean towards the traditional Protestant position, and away from Christmas, at least as a religious celebration.

people like gettin presents.

crevans 2007-12-14 09:38:35 PM
THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO, before the dawn of man as we knew him, there was Sir Santa of Claus, an ape-like creature making crude and pointless toys out of dinobones and his own waste, hurling them at chimp-like creatures with crinkled hands regardless of how they behaved the previous year. These so-called "toys" were buried as witches, and defecated upon, and hurled at predators when wakened by the searing grunts of children. It wasn't a holly jolly Christmas that year. For many were killed.

eqtworld: The main reason for Christmas is still going strong; it is a parable. Santa is God, he watches you all day and night and judges you. If you live a good Christian life, you get something good, if not you get something bad.

Let's not forget the other things:

Santa; Lives someplace a child can only fantasize about seeing (North Pole). God; Resides someplace you can only fantasize about seeing (Heaven).

Santa; Has many helpers (Elves). God; has many helpers (Cherubim).

Santa; Often portrayed with a beard. God; Often portrayed with a beard.

Santa; Primary mode of transportation is a sleigh pulled by magical flying reindeer. God; Primary mode of transportation is a throne carried by Seraphim.

Oh yes, it's all there people. There are only two major differences between God and Santa: 1) With Santa, you got some feedback every year (presents = good, nothing = bad) but with God you have to wait until you're dead. 2) Most adults acknowledge Santa isn't real, and those who honestly believe he does are properly labeled as psychotic.

Merry X-Mas*

(*X is a proper and historic abbreviation for Christ, so it still means "Christmas" dipsh*ts...)

During the English reformation, the Protestants (led by the radical Puritans and Presbyterians) opposed Christmas and Easter on the grounds that they were "Popish" rituals that only continued the corruption of the Catholic Church.

Sooooo, yeah, the War on Christmas isn't really news.

Why should they? Christmas, as recognized by the federal government, is not a religious holiday.

The belief that an omnipotent space wizard impregnated a Jewish woman 2000 years ago and her zombie offspring can make you live forever in eternal bliss if you symbolically eat his flesh and drink his blood while telepathically reaffirming to him that you accept him as your master so he can remove a persistent evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because the first woman ever alive was convinced by a talking snake to eat fruit from a magical tree that the space wizard had all created.

Failure to do this will result in your eternal torture after your death by the space wizard's arch nemesis at the space wizard's behest. Also, the space wizard loves you like his own child!
