Huckabee is no slouch. He polls very competitively against Hillary and Barak.

He should not be underestimated.

Hopefully, America has had enough willful ignorance when it comes to the White House.

/not betting that though

Personally, I think Huckabee would have a better shot at beating the Dem nominee than any other major Republican candidate. Guiliani's a miserable douchebag who is almost a self-parody; Romney's a douchebag (with religious beliefs that are less acceptable to the public than Huckabee's); Thompson comes off like the grumpy old fart uncle nobody in the family can stand. They all have equally far-right political views and they're all equally wrong on the issues, but at least Huckebee comes off as someone who seems like a likeable enough guy rather than just your standard douchebag politician. The fact that he's a fundie doesn't bother a large percentage of the population--in fact many see this as a plus. I think he's the Republicans' best hope.

I'm dreaming of a Huck/Paul White House. There's The Huck in the oval office with a wheat stalk in his mouth, feet up on the desk and holding the Bat Phone. The VEEP is running around slapping everyone in the face with a pocket Constitution. Behaving like a 3 shot espresso yapping dog.

I like it. I like it a lot.

I'm sorry, I don't care if it ends up being him and Hillary. I cannot and will not support a man who is an ordained minister and who has said that he wants his running mate to be Jesus. He will do everything he can to destroy the separation between church and state. Same with Romney.

don't underestimate huckabee. he's got the likability factor down big time. and that is what got the current bond-villain into the white house - the whole "i could have a beer with him" thing.

never mind that bush is actually a vindictive, petulant brat in real life; karl rove made him likable. and against gore and kerry, that was enough.

I see it like this, whacky enough for the evangelicals, level headed enough for the rest and when the Libs attacked him all last week, he didn't blink.

For the Conservatives, he's Elvis Presley!!!!

GaryPDX: when the Libs attacked him all last week

I don't think I've heard the Libs!!! say a word about him. None of the Democrats have made any comments; they're kind of laughing to themselves that the morans on the other side of the aisle would put that numbnuts up as a nominee.

Giuliani would fare far better.

Afternoon_Delight: I like Huckabee, but I agree with Rich Lowry that he's this cycle's Howard Dean and will fade.

Still, if by some miracle he gets the republican nomination, he could definitely beat Hillary or Obama. There's no doubt about that. He has a lot of appeal to a lot of people.

GaryPDX: I'm dreaming of a Huck/Paul White House.

"But you know, if anybody wants to believe they're the descendants of a primate, they're welcome to do it."

He's either scientifically illiterate or is not a sane person. Unsurprisingly, this is right up some people's alley.

Except he's not at all level headed for anyone EXCEPT the fundies. The fiscal conservatives view him as a liberal (tax increases), the law and order types view him as Dukakis II (thanks to Willie Horton II), and anyone to the left of Dobson and Robertson on social issues/church-state separation/assault on science views him as Bush to the Bushth power.

And it wasn't the "libs" who attacked him all last week, but rather Mitt Romney and the other "con"(artists).

And in the Republican Corner, wearing the same colors as the last guy, dedicated to 'Americun' values that'll surely end this country's long-running prosperity because some hicks can't get over their pathetic religious views, HUCKABEE!!

How. Utterly. Pathetic.

I don't give a shiat about that. He'd have to convince Congress to go along with it, which wouldn't happen because of the union influence on the Democrats if nothing else. The truth is, we need to compromise between opening the border and hauling every single person here illegally down to the border only to have them hop right back over. There has to be a middle ground that gets them documented and paying taxes.

I could live with a McCain presidency (I guess), but I can't see him getting the nomination.

Quickly, right off the top of your head, can you name one thing McCain stands for? Something that defines him and sets him apart as a leader?

Strong defense definitely but on many issues he is just as waffling as any other pol.

With Hillary, the message is that we're undertaxed and that she's a woman. With Obama, it's 'change' - whatever that's supposed to mean - and also, he's articulate.

What motivates McCain?

McCain is just the safe choice for the GOP this year. Just like with Kerry in 04. Hillary loses to any of the GOP candidates except Huckabee.

Have you seen the proposals coming out of Bali? You can believe in MMGW all you want but do you really want a GW tax on the Western nations managed by the UN?

The damnedest part of it is I would have gone along with the proposals for illegal immigrants in the country if they would first shut the border down and I mean shut it down. Like DMZ style THEN we can talk about working on getting the illegals here into some sort of program to make them citizens. I think that is the middle ground. McCain says that he understands that we do not trust Washington when they say they are going to increase border enforcement. So I hope he has gotten the message

Hang On Voltaire: Hillary loses to any of the GOP candidates except Huckabee.

Even though I would hate to see Hillary as president, I think she would still more than likely be able to beat whatever candidate the Republicans offer, although it would be by much less than Obama or Edwards.

The thing that would really hurt democrats if Hillary is the nominee is that the increased Republican turnout would very likely change some close races in the senate and house.

Jaykzo 2007-12-14 09:33:14 PM
I love how the media covers Huckabee 24/7, then wonders why his numbers have magically surged, in spite of his dismally funded, disorganized campaign.

Really now, I haven't seen a single reporter hint at the fact that Huck's numbers are up due to his constant exposure to the public. Name recognition is still a big factor in this election.

Meanwhile, Ron Paul has risen every month since July to capture 11%. And his coverage by the media is fractional compared to other candidates.

justoneznot 2007-12-14 09:34:34 PM
Huckabee is a fad. Once the republican base finds out about his liberal record, they'll quickly move to latch on to another candidate. Also, there is no way he could win the general election - that "talking to God" crap turns off a lot of people.

That's not what a post-Kyoto deal would entail. Cap and trade brings market solutions to bear and encourages efficiency and adoption and funding of newer sources of cleaner, renewable energy. If we got our asses in gear, we wouldn't need a carbon tax (and BTW, if a carbon tax was imposed, it would be done so by the United States government, not by the UN).

What proposal are you referring to?

McCain is also good at crossing the aisle and garnering bi-partisan support. God, if the 1999 McCain was running now, he'd farking wipe the floor with ever last one of these assbags running against him.

The GOP turns out BIG TIME against Hillary. Hillary is an incredibly bad public speaker, people do not trust her, the base has mild contempt for her. She would have to carry Florida and Ohio and there is no way she does. Look at the 2004 election and tell me what states she carries that Kerry didn't. Edwards and Obama both have a much better shot at carrying those states.
