The list is useless without 1987's "Fairytale of New York", which is one of the best Christmas songs ever, not just the 80s.

I thought that Bob Rivers "12 Pains of Christmas" was the best from the 80's.

And it cracks me up when I hear Bing Crosby and David Bowie's version of "The Little Drummer Boy" on the old folks radio station here...

If only they could see the video of that. Bowie looks f*ckin' EVIL.

"Peace on earth." Righhhht...

Agreed. I have it on my iPod now. I don't like the Madonna version.

How about "Walkin' round in women's underwear?"

♪Lacy things -- the wife is missin',
Didn't ask -- her permission,
I'm wearin' her clothes,
Her silk pantyhose,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear.♪

Winning an award for "Best Holiday Song of the '80s" is like winning an award for "Best Ice Hockey Player of Guatemala."

Ready as I'll ever be
Yeah boy, you know Joey Joe is ready!

What no "something stuck up in the chimney" song. And what about "The Night Santa Went Crazy" by Weird Al (someone else already mentioned Christmas at Ground Zero)

I never did like that d@mn "Do they know it's Christmas" for 2 reasons. Reason 1: It SUCKS Reason 2: No, they don't know it's Christmas because many of the worlds poor aren't Christians and even if they did know it was Christmas time they wouldn't care, they'd prefer to get food donations all year long.

Another blog in the same paper (new window) lists Madonna at #5 in the best list, and Band Aid as the worst.

Also, after King Diamond...

"Christmas Wrapping" needs more love.

Pontius Gandalf 2007-12-15 12:01:32 AM
Put me on the list of people who can't stand any version of "Santa Baby." I like Eartha Kitt, but that's the most overrated holiday song in life.

JohnnyDreamboat 2007-12-15 12:12:56 AM
The Pretenders' "200 Miles" is a gift-wrapped package full of win.
But Tom Waits' "Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis" is so good that it's off the scale.

JohnnyDreamboat 2007-12-15 12:14:08 AM
Sorry, meant "2000 Miles". Itchy trigger finger.

Nastyboy 2007-12-15 12:26:14 AM
You all fail.
U2's Christmas(Baby Please Come Home) is the best Christmas tune of the 80's.

thepostess [TotalFark] 2007-12-15 12:45:48 AM
Fark Christmas carols.

CrackedEgg 2007-12-15 01:23:50 AM
I don't remember where I saw it, but I once read something about Macca's "Wonderful Christmastime" being tied to something like 200 suicides in Japan one year. There seemed to be something about that song that made people reach for the fillet knife, the article said. I like Paul, but that shiat sucks. Better than Rudolph the Rednosed Reggae, I guess.

/2000 Miles & Christmas Wrapping FTW
//Run Rudolph Run is pretty ok too

Nastyboy: You all fail.
U2's Christmas(Baby Please Come Home) is the best Christmas tune of the 80's.

The version by Darlene Love is better. The version by the Catskills is best.

what year did The Kinks "Father Christmas" come out?

1977

I personally prefer the rebuttal album: "No, We Don't Know It's Christmas ... Do *YOU* Know We're Muslims?"

I thought that for a while, too, but even in the rest of north Africa, Ethiopia has a reputation for being pretty Christian.

"There won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime" still strikes me as relly dumb.

The list is useless without 1987's "Fairytale of New York", which is one of the best Christmas songs ever, not just the 80s.

Voting should be enabled. Fairytale of New York was the first Pouges song I'd ever heard and it was one of those jaw-dropping moments.

pstawicki 2007-12-15 09:13:19 PM
Sorry - I would put The Waitresses before Live Aid. Much better song for the holidays. (Boy George did have an amazing voice on that one though didn't he!)

Poleaxed 2007-12-20 05:41:56 PM
The Dogs of War: what about 'last christmas' by wham?

Dude, when I was in Germany in December two years ago, this song was playing EVERYWHERE. I swear, it was the only Xmas song they knew or something. I was dying for Nat King Cole to bust out with "The Christmas Song."
