You know how they did it.

They partially nationalized their oil business. Statoil (now called StatoilHydro) is publicly traded, but 64% of their stock is owned by the Norwegian government. So Norway is able to take all the dividend revenue from their incredibly profitable oil company and use it to the benefit of their people.

Imagine if we were to do something like that here in the US.

Check out the Wikipedia article on Norway's Economy.

All those oh so evil economy destroying social programs, yet they somehow have the second highest per-capita GDP in the world.

Impressive.

/Then again, Michael Moore is still fat...

yes w/ our vast oil reserves/capita. oh wait we dont have those? norway is a small massively oil rich nation. I applaud them for not falling into the petro curse but still, to compare them to any nation that doesn't have absurd /capita oil production is extremely naive.

Sounds like Texas.

Sounds like Alaska. The state writes the citizens checks, but then they put their hands out wanting US Federal money for roads and so forth.

Too bad South Africa doesn't do this with the diamonds/gold/platinum mines.

I'm actually out sick today, but he did mention that their prisons are like The Real World. I thought he was joking, but apparently no.

Yeah, he is a big fan of StatOil though (he used to work for them).

What was with those American conservative newsfolks at the beginning saying that Michael Moore is a liar and Canadian healthcare sucks? Being a Canadian and not watching any American news, I'm confused. As far as I heard, being a poor American who suddenly, say, crashes their bicycle and breaks their wrist, they're in debt to pay for the care. I did the same thing a couple years ago and yeah, I didn't have to pay for anything. I waited for an hour while they worked on trauma victims ahead of me in line but I was out of there a few hours later with a cast and some painkillers. I gad to have emergency surgery a few years before that and no, I didn't pay for any of that and I was in there for a week recovering. As far as I know, nobody here in Canada is checking accident victims for health insurance before the ambulance will take them from the scene of the crash. People are not selling their homes to pay for cancer treatments.

On the other hand, I was in Washington state one time and some fool insisted on calling paramedics when I had a panic attack. All I needed was to get some fresh air and shake it off outside. But they called them anyway. I was sent a bill for almost $300 dollars because some paramedic took my pulse, checked my eyes, and confirmed that I was indeed having a panic attack and to proceed trying to do deep breathing exercises that I was already doing. Wow, that really helped.

While you're preaching to the choir here, paramedics and emergency rooms cannot turn a patient down for lack of insurance. It's against the law. They will send you a nice bill, though, sorry about that.

When I lived in London my (english) friend broke his wrist playing rugby. He was in and out of the hospital with a cast in a couple of hours. He didn't have to pay a cent for it. That was the day I converted to non-privatized health coverage.

Norway's oil fund has a philosopher on staff to examine investment choices from an ethical standpoint.

Now that is something.

I'm beginning to think that Americans are too selfish to actually want to help people in need of health care.

When my stepdaughter lived in France for 6 months to teach English, she came down with a terrible flu. She went to the doc and got a scrip for antibiotics. The co-pay was 30 euros (about $35 at the time). That visit probably would've cost around $80-100 here.

That's when I converted to being pro-state payor healthcare.

But, that's not what Michael Moore is talking about. He's talking about the prisons in Norway.

helchose 2007-12-14 05:25:39 PM

I'm wondering if he's going to next do a doc on how our prisons suck compared to other Western countries? I'd like to see that.

Unless you're insured. The insurance companies have contracted to pay $22.

I'm a Norwegian, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies... no, seriously, I am.

For what it's worth, Norwegian culture is fundamentally stable and healthy, both physically and psychologically. The opinions expressed in Moore's piece are fundamentally true.

Not that there aren't downsides. Ask me if you want more details.

I will say that one mis-characterization of Moore's video is the weather: Norway is like that for two to three months of the year. The rest of the time it is much grayer/whiter.

Um, I'm sure you could just as easily string together videos of smiling Americans enjoying beautiful landscape, a solar plant in Arizona and interviews with seemingly intelligent and friendly people and juxtapose it against selective negative visual imagery and facts (more emphasis on the visual imagery though) of Norway.

Minus the rankings of education, equality, standard of living and adding State-sanctioned murdering of prisoners, and such, sure. You know, the actual facts rather than the pictures.

Why are the best countries so damn cold? I hate the cold.

Jon Snow [TotalFark] 2007-12-14 05:59:03 PM
I take that back. We could brag about how we kick other Western countries asses in number of foreign nations our soldiers are currently deployed in, our obesity primacy, and the amount of money paid to drug-abusing athletes.

Suck it, Norway! We have millionaires that stick needles in each others' asses to please people too fat to fit in the stands so they don't give any thought to our cowboy diplomacy!

CUT TO WALMART SMILEY FACE

coma 2007-12-14 06:01:52 PM
As much as I agree with Moore on our health care system being screwed up, perhaps his morbidly obese ass isn't the best choice to shed a light on that problem. He talks of insurance being to expensive for the uninsured when its arrogantly fat farks like him that drive up claim costs. Hey fatty, quit making my rates go up!
