So Smashing Pumpkins has channeled TFers, then? I guess they don't like the TFD changes either.

So, Subby, you decided to create a whiny headline in which to whine about the Smashing Pumpkins whining? Pot, meet Kettle. I believe you are both black.

I was initially disappointed in Zeitgeist, but it really grew on me. I'm eager to hear new stuff. It seems like this incarnation of the band branched from the "Zero" single.

my ex kept trying to get me to listen to the last album and i kept saying "listen in my head they died with the 90's..i refuse to listen to this crap". but sadly i couldn't avoid it as she would play it all the time. it was very meh inspiring.

I was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan; no matter how much I relisten to Zeitgeist (and I've tried) I can't get into it. It sounds too medicated (new window).

If they wanted me to spend money, they would release Machina II on cd's in studio quality. I admit I bought Zeitgiest, but it is not very good.

I'm a hardcore Corgan fan, but i still laughed hard at the headline.

Off to Netphoria.org I go!

Yea those Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and The Who were also a bunch of whiny biatches using that logic. Singing love songs and talking about the world around you can often come off as whiny because there is a lot to whine about. I love SP one of my favortie bands. Musically they kick ass and lyrically Billy is one of the tops of the 90's. Im sure i am just some whiny biatch too now but i just dont get all the hate.

They didn't have even a quarter of the whine Corrigan has.

They also rocked harder. Much harder.

As far as I'm concerned, this was the end of Smashing Pumpkins.

I used to be a huge Pumpkins fan. But they lost me after Adore. And I like electronic music, but everything they did after Adore just made me angry. Every few months it was "The Pumpkins are going to do another guitar album like Siamese Dream!!!" and then we get a record full of sterile keyboard Pro Tools noodling coupled with Flood's horrible obsession with making Corgan's nasal whine even more pronounced by setting it mono and in the center of the mix, naming the songs some unintelligible crap like "The Glass And The Ghost Children". And they did this like 3 times in a row. Then he comes back years later with "Zwan" and does about the same thing with a completely new line up of people I've never heard of.

Sorry if i don't run out and jump all over Zeitgeist. There's just so much other music out there to enjoy.

Gish was mine. I stopped caring around the time when I pulled out of my teenage depression and started realizing depressing does not equal deep or poetic

Gunny Highway you have no idea what you are talking about.

eg. ...Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and The Who were also a bunch of whiny biatches

Or maybe better put: I have no idea what you are talking about

Gunny Highway 2007-12-13 03:41:52 PM
I dont understand why people call them whiny. Most bands are whiny. Not the strongest argument i have ever made but i was trying to defend SP. Robert Plant sounds whiny to me. I love the music and the band but he sounds whiny. Whenever anything comes up about SP people claim they whine and that just a weak argument. weak i know but i dont know how else to put it. FAIL i know

/end whine

lazario 2007-12-13 03:55:37 PM
No prob Gunny, I like SP I just dont really listen to them anymore. I think the biggest difference between Zep and other "classics" as opposed to SP and most what has been coming out, is that alot of the "classic" was fun. Im not the biggest Zep fan, but the Beatles, the Who and more just sounded like they were having fun, Billy just sounds too serious, its hard to picture the guy smiling.

Gunny Highway: I dont understand why people call them whiny. Most bands are whiny.

It's Corrigan's voice. He sounds like a bratty stupid self-absorbed kid.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I like some of their stuff.

But he does come off like a whiny little git. Not to mention they tried to sound like Seattle grunge after the style was already played out. They mostly annoy me.

Color me apathetic. I might have liked Zeitgeist more if Billy's vocals hadn't been so loud in the mix. With a voice like his, it should be somewhat buried under everything else.

/sing with the sinuses
//on second thought, don't

Threat Level Midnight 2007-12-13 05:08:52 PM
Billy does have an extremely whiny voice. Supposedly took voice lessons at some point to improve, but I don't detect much improvement.

Pumpkins were my first concert ever, January of 96? 97?. Terrible seats but I had a great time.

I have every album, even Machina II somewhere, yet I have no desire to pick up Zeitgeist. After the roster changes it just wasn't the same band.

Agreed, but Billy did everything but the drums for their old stuff anyway.

astro716 2007-12-13 05:16:17 PM
I second that bit about the mix on Zeitgeist. It's a little too obviously recorded after-the-fact (yes i know this is standard practice). When the vocals are pushed back, psychologically it sounds like a live performance where drums and guitar are bleeding into the vocals. IMHO.

/still like the album, though.

Poleaxed 2007-12-13 05:33:36 PM
Gish and Siamese Dream were great, didn't listen to them after that. Their song from "Singles" soundtrack was kickass too. "Silverfark" is probably my fave.

Wow, same on both points for me as well.

I don't get the whole "it's not the same since the lineup changed" thing. Since when did James Iha or D'arcy really matter in the studio? That's right, never.

P.S. Looking forward to new release, hope they use the new people. Saw them live on this past tour and they complimented BC/JC really well.

When I was 12 I totally wanted Billy. There, I said it.

mofomisfit 2007-12-13 06:48:52 PM
Is it going to be released in four formats exclusive to four different big name retailers so you have to buy all four to get all the bonus songs? And then five months later is there going to be a special edition version packaged with a dvd exclusive to best buy? Because that would be awesome.

MikoSquiz 2007-12-13 07:00:37 PM
Best band of the 90s. Actually, best American rock band between '79 or so and .. er.. actually, there hasn't been a better one since, come to think of it. They are kind of old and tired now, but not to a Stones/Van Halen extreme.

Also, 'grunge'? They existed at the same time as grunge, that's all they ever had to do with it.

FeedTheCollapse 2007-12-13 07:27:44 PM
I don't mind Corgans voice that much, but I'm more annoyed at the fact that for every awesome track SP records, they record 3 extremely mediocre tracks. It might be one thing if they tracks were relegated to b-sides or shelved entirely, but no, they're album cuts. (I'm looking at you, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness...)

For the amount of SP hate threads I see on fark, I'm surprised some don't know how to spell Corgan.

/or maybe Corrigan is an insult or something that I don't yet know or care about

Zeitgeist had really promising material, but it was so over-compressed and distorted at the mastering phase, it's nearly unlistenable. For comparison, put on Melon Collie right after listening to Zeitgeist, and turn it up to a similar volume - and hear how HUGE it sounds.

For those who thought SP were no fun, watch Viewphoria. It's hilarious. And listen to the fourth quarter of Melon Collie.
