He was usually tuned down to D or even C#. I don't think there was a science to the exact pitch.

I'm not a religious man, but listening to Jimi play is as close to a religious experience as I will probably get in my lifetime.

Well, it's Red House, so it's awesome, I gotta say I'm not a fan of that particular instance. I did a search on youtube...hendrix red house -cover and I've been listening to a few during the hiccup. Here's what I think so far:

1. Album version
2. Ottawa
3. Isle of Wight
4. Woodstock
5. Atlanta

Stockholm is good too, anybody got a link to the whole thing in one piece instead of two?

Very nice tone.

I'm shamed that the thought "ooooh, sparklers!" crossed my mind 37 seconds into the thing.

I was looking for an image of Cartman from the Guitar Queer-o episode to aid with a snarky remark, but I found this (pops) (NSFW) and had to share.

A little too sloppy a little too much... I'm a Django Reinhardt fan for a reason.

I'm a completely straight guy and I have to say I would totally suck Jimi Hendrix's cock, unless he was still alive, because that would be gay.

that was stroke of genius

/too bad the drugs helped

thequartermexican 2007-12-11 09:55:09 PM
yeah, Jimi is indeed a deity among guitarists. But this performance fell a tad short for me. Of the ones i've heard, i think the Isle of Wight one (from Blue Wild Angel) is probably best, followed by the two versions on Jimi Blues. Woodstock's good too. Haven't heard the Ottowa one...gotta look for that.

Good sure.. better???? Nah, Not to me, maybe faster but fast does not mean better. Jimi has massive Soul!! Just like David Gilmour, does not play fast but seems to be voted one of the best time and time again.

RailGunner...

Sorry, but RR isn't qualified to shine Jimi's shoes.

try listening with your soul and not just hearing with your ears. Hendrix brought the guitar alive like no one had ever done before or has done since. Technical skill is only a tool for a musician, real music comes from within.

So, that's what South Park has reduced itself to, calling things they don't like "gay" ? I already stopped watching them because of the preachiness, but I'm feeling that SP has just become the voice of two grumpy old men. Two immature grumpy old men, that is.

OldManDownDRoad 2007-12-12 08:51:24 AM
"Red House" was the first Hendrix song I ever heard and it's been a favorite ever since. I've always thought it was a shame his ability to play the blues was overshadowed by the hippy shiat.

Shang-High is correct. Hendrix is one of those rare musicians for whom the instrument was just an intermediary. See also Charlie Parker or Louis Armstrong.

I think the camera man is drunk or stoned. He can't keep the camera still for 5 seconds.

And, why is all the 60's footage zoomed in so close or fish-eye?

Jimi rocks though

30 years from now, everyone will be saying, "Why do all these professional videos have this 'shaky-cam' effect?"

Generational Flavour.

That is all

xdedd: I would have loved to hear what he'd be playing now.

I think it'd be something along these lines:

"Let me outta this coffin baby
It's cold and cramped in here
Oh yeah, let me outta this coffin baby
It's so cold and cramped in here
I been down here forty years now,
I'd really like to have a beer..."

T.rex 2007-12-12 02:13:38 PM
I really and truly believe that if Hendrix was alive today, he'd be clawing madly at the lid of his coffin.

Poleaxed 2007-12-12 07:18:03 PM
His Red House version for the "Live at Winterland" is much tighter and passionate than this version. The Winterland version is probably my all time favorite Jimi performance and really got me into listening to him. I can play every note of that song (only in my head, sadly.)

The first famous musician to make his own "shreds" video.

The drugs were not always good to Jimi.

Will Continue to Monitor 2007-12-13 09:54:39 AM
My favorite version is the funked-out one he did live in NY, 1968. Pops up on some miscellaneous compilations, like "Woke Up this Morning and Found Myself Dead", which features some dumbass Jim Morrison work from the same gig. But what Jimi's doing that night is some of my favorite guitar work from anyone. Whatever his drug of choice was at the time, he'd clearly had it in just the right quantity, quality, and timing. Morrison, on the other hand, could've standed to be 302'd...

Links 2007-12-13 12:20:43 PM
Yeah, cause Morrison was a total fraud.

MN2 2007-12-13 04:22:42 PM
Dreadstar: What the hell tuning/key is he playing that in?

He tuned to Eb standard on the majority of his 3 "pre-humous" studio albums. It's in B blues if you think of it as standard E tuning.

RailGunner: Even better

FAIL! How could you even think such a thing?! Blasphemy!
