(Stuff) Scary A teenager's school science project has exposed multiple antibiotic-resistant bugs in fresh chicken sold in supermarkets. If only there was some sort of heat treatment you could use to kill the bugs   (stuff.co.nz) divider line 93

For all you raw chicken lovers out there let this be a warning.

Damn, I love me some chicken sashimi.

Does this go for cornish game hens as well?

Let's see how resistant the little buggers are to a juicy dose of ionizing radiation.

I tried using Peri Peri sauce. Dunno if it kills any bugs, but it's finger licking good.

Welcome to 20 year old news.

I just rub it down with some spices and that uranium that Amazon.com is selling. Kills all the bacteria, and then some.

I can has irradiation? And not discard ten hundred thousand pounds of ground beef every other month? Someone think of the slaughtered animals. If you don't like the thought of irradiation, you haven't thought the whole thing thru on eating farm raised animals. Do not google. Google is not your friend.

She bought six fresh chickens - free-range, barn-raised and organic - from a Christchurch supermarket.

So they cost more and come with free antibiotic-resistant bacteria? Sign me up!

Drug resistant salmonella adds that extra little zing and tongue numbness I have come to expect from my Walmartian (or in this case church) chicken. It's explosive diarrhea good.

/They got it from a church?
//Isn't that some kind of trademark infringment?
///You should just go to Popeye's

fark at work 2007-11-30 11:32:21 PM
1. cook chicken well done (190 degrees)
2. avoid salmonella
3. survive
4. profit

gimpols1908 2007-11-30 11:35:36 PM
"tobramycin is restricted to human use only."

That just scares me - here son we don't trust this with our chickens.

The_Young_Man_and_the_Sea 2007-11-30 11:35:56 PM
Because 6 chickens constitute a reasonable sample size, get back to me when some real science comes out.

eli pabst 2007-11-30 11:37:57 PM
The fact that the chickens were bought in a supermarket makes me question whether they got contaminated there. Especially since several of the antibiotics aren't given to chickens. Bacteria are particularly ubiquitous and have an amazing ability to contaminate things, especially half-assed science fair projects.

Shazam999 2007-11-30 11:38:08 PM
Luckily I cook chicken before I eat it.

Chicken is one of the unsafest things you can eat, bacteria-wise, because it's often eaten with the skin on. The purpose of the skin (besides keeping the chicken's insides in) is to keep bacteria *out*. So that's where all the bacteria accumulate. Pork and beef, not so dangerous because you don't eat the skin.

Basically, if anything in your kitchen touches raw chicken, you should burn down your kitchen and everything in it immediately.

Of course, the other purpose of the chicken skin is to be deliciously crispy when fried in 370-degree oil, so you don't want to remove it. Just nuke anything it touched while raw.

Bucky Katt [TotalFark] 2007-11-30 11:42:34 PM
So you're saying raw meat should be cooked before consumption? That's, like, way radical!

legalkegel 2007-11-30 11:43:39 PM
Am I the only one who read this headline and the one in TFA to mean the kids deliberately tainted the chicken with antibiotic-resistant bugs?

\holy crap it must be Friday

nobodyUwannaknow 2007-11-30 11:47:00 PM
gawd must have created these antibiotic resistant bacteria to thwart the science fair, because they certainly could not have evolved from antibiotic susceptible bacteria.

jsmilky 2007-11-30 11:48:07 PM
I love it when chicken breast goes on sale for $0.99 per pound. It made me go out and buy a George Foreman grill back in '03. My favorite dish is grilled chicken breast on whole wheat toast, with tons of mustard, paprika, and some honey.

I always keep a bottle of bleach handy when I'm cooking chicken. The kitchen sink always gets a good soaking in bleach water, and of course I wash my hands with LIQUID BLEACH.

Because I don't screw around.

lohphat 2007-11-30 11:49:26 PM
ElLoco: Let's see how resistant the little buggers are to a juicy dose of ionizing radiation.

We'd like to do that but the hippies don't know the difference between radiation and radioactive and get all up in arms: OMGWTFBBQ TEH CANSERS!!11!1!tooma

We could remove these bugs via a nice radiation dose instead of causing bug mutations via overuse of anti-biotics.

/I *hates* me some hippahs!

huntercr 2007-11-30 11:54:29 PM
I have never understood why chickens would even need antibiotics. The "fryer" bird is only 8 weeks old, and the "roaster" is only 5 months old when they are brought to market.

The only reason they would ever get sick is if they were in terrible living conditions... oh wait.... nevermind.

All that beef jerky I've consumed. It's a good thing I always wash it down with and ice cold Coke. That stuff will kill anything.

fractalkine 2007-12-01 12:02:16 AM
chicken should be cooked at about 160-165... however some antibiotics arent denatured until about 161 degrees... so if you undercook your chicken by a few degrees... you are still possibly ingesting some of these antibiotics

That's how you do it. My county extension service lists "cross contamination of kitchen surfaces during the preparation of pork chitterlings" as the number one cause of food poisoning in the county.

Clorox FTW.

Cuchulane [TotalFark] 2007-12-01 12:05:50 AM
Wow. Universal misunderstanding of the article.

The bacteria are the normal amount that were expected to be found in the chicken. The bacteria had developed resistance to the antibiotics given the chicken, and in turn had developed resistance to antibiotics commonly used to treat humans. The concern is that the bacteria in the chicken would pass this trait on to bacteria typically found in humans.

Perhaps if there was a means for the body; a system if you will, for it to adapt to and combat pathogenic microbes, eventually rendering it immune to them.

What would such a thing be called?
