neat! i noticed that even in the later lyrics of the song there is a repeating pattern of the syllables where they are all the same Fibonacci number again and again:

weep like a widow (5)
to feel inspired (5)
fathom the power(5)
witness the beauty (5)
bathe in the fountain (5)
swing on the spiral (5)
still be a human (5)

with my feet upon the ground I (8)
lose myself between the sound I (8)
open wide to suck it in I (8)
feel it move across my skin I'm (8)
reaching up and reaching out I'm (8)
reaching for the random or what (8)
ever will bewilder me and (8)
following our will and whim we (8)
may just go where no one's been we'll (8)
ride the spiral to the end and (8)
we may just go where no one's been (8)

spiral out (3)
keep going (3)

/total geek out!

I'm going to have to try to do the re-ordering of the songs... maybe even play it on the radio

probably one of the most awesome songs i have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

I remember reading that Danny Carey would come up with rhythms by deriving them from equations he came up with after DMT trips. Awesome find, subby!

hooks4feet 2007-11-28 09:40:32 PM
Yeah, well, Kanye West writes, sings, and produces all his own music.

Why does he have to yell all the time. He sounds like me getting kids off of my lawn.

Dafodude: I remember reading that Danny Carey would come up with rhythms by deriving them from equations he came up with after DMT trips. Awesome find, subby!

DMT, naturally produced by the pineal gland, is said to be the location of our "third eye." Probably ties in with something they're going on about.

Also, when the video was talking about "arranging the tracks" in a fibonacci sequence, how the hell did he come up with that?

Sarcasticus 2007-11-28 10:11:07 PM
The sequence he came up for when rearranging the tracks according to Fibonacci is:
6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10

Clearly, 6 + 7 != 5, and in general Fn != F(n-1) + F(n-2). So I have no idea how he got this sequence and it's bugging the hell outta me.

/Kinda like when I can't remember the name of the bad guy from Tron.

Gratch 2007-11-28 10:11:20 PM
Saw Tool last Saturday night. One of the most amazing shows I've ever seen. They are one of the few bands that sound just as good live as they do on CD.

Sharkface217 2007-11-28 10:13:19 PM
I regret that I've missed not one but two Tool concerts. I love their music and hope to catch them on the next next tour to the NYC area.

saintwrathchild 2007-11-28 10:13:24 PM
Pretty cool. Not much of a Tool fan, they've got that moody "Why don't I have any problems?" vibe to them, but that was an intelligent and heavy song. I approve.

lazario 2007-11-28 10:20:32 PM
Like I have always said, science (specifically physics and mathematics) can be realized and experienced through meditation and psychedelics... for more information, consult you pineal gland.

/I never wore Birkenstock's and I shower often
//Consult Principia Discordia if your pineal gland has gotten rusty

Sarcasticus 2007-11-28 10:22:41 PM
I'm sure I'm the only one concerned with the math here. But I found this out;

6+7 = 13
5+8 = 13
4+9 = 13
13
1+12 = 13
2+11 = 13
3+10 = 13

So, it's not a fibonacci sequence, exactly, but some weird arrangement where each two tracks equal 13. It's not really a series, either. Very odd.

Anyhoo, a geek wrote more about this here (new window).

Yeah there's some huge holes in logic there, but otherwise a really cool video. I've kind of gotten bored with Tool lately but I still respect their mission to rock you thoughtfully.

That video could have used more of the Π character when trying to articulate the sequence, it would have satisfied my inner nerd.

Theaetetus 2007-11-28 10:53:27 PM
Geez.
Guys.
Come on.
This is dumb.
Obviously dumb.
I know we're a bunch of nerds here.
But don't you think this gets a little ridiculous?
I mean, honestly, what farker do you know that can count all the way up to twenty-one?

teh-tech 2007-11-28 11:17:18 PM
OMG!!! Alert the press!!! Music has MATHIN IT!!!

guitarpick8120 2007-11-28 11:18:48 PM
Just because it doesn't work 100% with the Fibonacci sequence doesn't mean we can't start calling something similar the Maynard sequence.

hooks4feet 2007-11-28 11:32:24 PM
I was told there would be no math.

Yes, except that that would be gay.
Not that there's- you know.
Anyways,
no.

I could've sworn I saw a video of this song on MTV or VH1. I only caught the end, but it has the same image as on the album cover, except animated.

This ain't your father's rock and roll anymore...

Toriko [TotalFark] 2007-11-28 11:44:37 PM
Huh.. What with 46 and 2 I thought the 'spiral' reference was to DNA. I guess it works on many levels. Nice find subby.

Fleet [TotalFark] 2007-11-28 11:44:49 PM
Watching a bootleg really can't compare with the intensity of actually seeing these guys live, but here's Lateralus live from Radio City Music Hall during the 2002 Lateralus tour. I wish the camera guy caught more of the videos, but you can see the spiral images a couple of times during the song.

Best show I've ever been to was their Biloxi show in November 2002 during the same tour as the video above.

That was "Parabola". There is no video for "Lateralus".

/The "Vicarious" video is finally coming out on December 18... only a year and a half after 10K Days came out.

Okay, fark this. I just acquired the album and rearranged it according to the sequence mentioned.

Holy farketting fark. I'm a music major and an engineer. This is absolutely farking incredible.

The vodak helps, mind you.

Theatetus I am a huge Tool fan but never really got into this album. Perhaps I wasn't playing it in the right order.

This is applicable in most situations. No need to qualify further.

Uh no, they really don't.

And Opiate is still one of the best debut albums ever.

I had no idea farkers liked the firewater...well shiot.

I gotta say I love Tool but the Hubble pics were way more interesting...at least the universe as we know it doest make a decade and a half worth of albums that have the all have the emotion.

/dont get me wrong I love Tool, but I can only listen them when I am in that Tool mode.
//WTF am I talking about? I listen to the Ramones almost on the daily.
///I hope y'all know what Im saying though, if not, consult your pineal gland.

Its not so much a reordering of tracks to a Fibonacci sequence as it is moving along in a spiral, as the graph of a Fibonacci is roughly a spiral.

I can't remember the article I found it in, but starting at the middle is 13 and then followed by the pairs that add up to thirteen.

I'll see if I can find the article again.

Always though Danny was going to have some "47th problem of Euclid" type song as much as he's into that stuff.

Dude's intense when he gets on one of his schpiels (yes, I intentionally misspelled that).

Wow, I fully expected a bunch of poo-pooing of one of my favorite bands in here. Instead I see a crapload of people very impressed.

I'm glad. Tool kicks ass. And not in that "I'm wearing black and things that piss off my parents kick ass" kind of way. In that "wow, some people actually really put a lot of time and thought and work into stuff" kind of way.

They come out with an album about every 5 years. They probably legitimately spend 3 of those years writing, rather than crapping out some mediocre asspile every 8 months like most bands.

It sucks waiting, but it's always been worth it. If you have the chance - SEE THEM LIVE. (videos do not do justice.)

haagen 2007-11-29 02:58:48 AM
I've had the pleasure of seeing them live once, and as others have said the experience is pretty surreal. If you get a chance make sure you go.
