I think more people are actually beginning to. I consider myself a Democrat but find some of their ideas pathetically inane. More people are beginning to find their own ways, though not enough at this point to make a difference.

I agree with you there. My point is, its not just republicans that follow the herd. More people follow the herd than lead it, in any political arena.

Most people simply have no clue what they believe, why the believe it, or what the results might be at the end of the day.

I agree. Steps should be taken to get all of the countries together and agree to a fair plan of slowing greenhouse gases. this is a world problem, not just the United States.

It became a political issue because of the all mighty dollar. Curbing global warming = loss of profits and industry change for energy suppliers.
Energy suppliers response;
"Loss of profits! Oh my, we can not have this! Send out the propaganda machines and call the science community liars! Lobby everything to do with this and get me a list of our paid off politicians ahh I mean gov't officials on energy. One of the (few) benefits of getting older is having seen an awful lot of "conventional wisdom" debunked. Am not convinced of either side of the GW debate, and unlike most of the Farkers that enlighten us, try to avoid debating it a political issue.

It's a political issue because Republicans made it a political issue. Rich Republicans with money don't want anything to upset the status quo (and a lot of possible attempts to fix the climate change problem would do that). Poorer (read: dumb and uneducated) Republicans think that environmentalism is a communist conspiracy to destroy Western civilization. This is partly a result of propaganda and manipulation by the rich Republicans, and partly a result of the general scientific illiteracy and selfish, macho attitude present in the poorer Republicans. And of course you can't count out the specifically political motivations: the Republican Party likely saw that the Democrats had more credibility on environmental issues, so they decided to oppose it at all costs just in order to attack the Democrats. It's all about the political game; the science itself is a secondary consideration or not a consideration at all.

It's all about MONEY.
Screw the future, as long as the rich keep getting richer.

Kidding. I read Bad Astronomy from time to time, so I can vote for it with a clear conscience. The other guy (from a brief skim) seemed sloppy, confusing statements by BA with ones by BA's readers. If you have to, give all the sites a "sniff test" before voting.
