Marijuana, which has only recreational and limited medical uses, is the shiftless counterpart to the go-getter hemp.

Even the plant is stoned.

The Onanist [TotalFark] 2007-10-18 04:40:40 PM
Legalize it.

Hm, two groups I can't stand... Farmers and the DEA.

Well lets go farmers, I guess.

Cool, legalize it and then they can get the SCHIP money from taxing weed instead of cigs!

Yeah, those people that grow the food you eat. Geeze, what's their problem.

Hemp fiber is incredibly useful, durable, and strong. I've been waiting for this for a long time. Hemp blended cloth will make longer lasting clothes than cotton can.

But if you're handling hemp rope, you'd better have gloves. Because if your hands slip a little, those fibers will stick you like splinters, and they hurt like a motherfarker.

Living around farmer politics my whole life... It's the huge government subsidies they get, and all they do is complain for more and more... They've been paid to _not_ grow food in order to keep the prices artificially high since the dustbowl era.

Serioulsy, they should just legalize it. I don't even smoke it, and I can see that it should be legally available to adults. Just treat it like alcohol: Tax it, have an age restriction, no driving while on it, etc.

vernonFL [TotalFark] 2007-10-18 04:49:22 PM
Second, its a plant. A living thing. How can you make growing a plant illegal? They grow in the wild.

The February 1938 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine heralded hemp as the "new billion-dollar crop,"
***

And THAT'S why there is a vague and interminable war on drugs.

Hearst, Dow, Bayer... None of them want any natural competition.

But it sets a bad example for the children, if we let the farmers grow it. All vegetables, actually, but with the whole "eating" thing, I guess we can let them slide.

You mean about the people who kept hemp illegal all these years using MJ as an excuse so they could monopolize the cotton market?

Industrial hemp has an insignificant amount of THC. Maybe if you smoked a entire hay-bail full of it you *might* get a slight buzz off it.

I don't really know all the ins and outs of subsidies, but my uncles farmed and worked their asses off and barely made enough to get by. It is a hard and obviously thankless job.

I guess you can always grow your own food.

entropy-- 2007-10-18 04:57:01 PM
Court cases have ruled that the only reason congress can control marijuana is the interstate commerce clause, and that clause only applies because it is a drug. Since industrial hemp isn't a drug, then congress cannot claim control via the commerce clause (at least going by previous court cases), and so the DEA really doesn't have any right to limit it. The argument that allowing hemp may make marijuana enforcement harder may well be true, but that isn't relevent to the authority they have to regulate it.

I picked up a bunch of hemp clothes from the Patagonia outlet store in Dillon Montana. Some of the most comfortable clothes I have. Love 'em. If you are anywhere near Dillon, I highly recommend stopping there. Super cheap prices.

Weed. Is there anything it can't do?
