Who wants some skank ruining the rental property?

I'm gonna be the one to get flamed here...(like that's something new..)...but I believe if it's MY apartments I should have the right to rent/not rent to anybody I choose.....

You may believe it, but fair housing laws say otherwise.

Is what they are doing illegal?

So you are basically saying is that you dont have to rent to blacks if you want too.

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2007-09-25 12:20:47 PM
You may believe it, but fair housing laws say otherwise.

Do they? Is "inked" a race, frequently discriminated against and in need of federal protections?

Seriously asking. I think this raises a lot of interesting questions about the nature of discrimination based upon the colour of one's skin -- if the person in question has chosen that colour/pattern for himself.

putting words in my mouth...but basically you're right...I should also be able to refuse rednecks, illegal aliens, old people, young people, fat people, red headed people, and christians......it's MY apartments...the government should keep it's nose out...

You could also say you didnt like thier haircut- or the type of cloths they are wearing.

What about thier profession? Could you not rent based on thier job (barring not being able to pay rent)?

Im not saying I disagree with you-

I find however that its usually the people you think are good that suck as rentees. My sister in law for instance- Shes family. However she moved in and never paid rent. Cost me 6 months of legal fees to get her moved out.

what about "retirement communities" where you have to be at least 55 years old.....isn't that age discrimination??

plmyfngr: what about "retirement communities" where you have to be at least 55 years old.....isn't that age discrimination??

No, they are specifically exempt from housing age discrimination laws.

plmyfngr: maybe I already do...what's that got to do with it??

You're asking the wrong guy. I, personally, don't know why they are exempt. I had nothing to do with the laws. But, from time to time, people challenge retirement communities on the age-discrimination thing, and the courts repeatedly allow them.

As a small BUSINESS owner, my apartment IS my workplace.
And if my CLIENTS don't want to look at some HIPPY with tattoos, or if it scares them AWAY from my business, then we have a PROBLEM.
I know tattoos are like tracking collars so LIBS can find each OTHER, but I don't want that crap in my face when I'm leading a client into MY showroom.

That's pretty much why blacks had to sit in the back of the bus.

cannotsuggestaname [TotalFark] 2007-09-25 12:45:24 PM
why did you capitalize random words there?

Eh, I think it is bad to discriminate based off of tattoos. More and more people are getting inked, and you would be surprised at who gets them now. I also think the owners have a right to rent to who they wish to, as long as it doesn't violate the current laws.

Adman12 [TotalFark] 2007-09-25 01:31:35 PM
I don't want to sound pro-discrimination here, because I'm not. But I'm still surprised that they would admit out loud that they discriminated on the basis of body art. I mean, why don't they just do what so many people do with applicants who are unattractive, antisocial, or smelly, and just pass them over without really explaining why? Isn't that an easier way out?

I'm tattooed, pierced, and have stretched lobes (5/8"), and have never missed a rent or utilities payment. Cingular lost my payment once, but removed the late charges and credit ding when I beat them with a bank statement.

Then again, I'm renting in a beautiful historic building and not one of those elite, tasteful bedroom communities, so maybe I'm missing out on something.

A landlord that doesn't like you can make your life a living hell, so why would you want to live somewhere where you're not wanted?

I can understand the anger at someone judging you based upon outward appearances, but I'm split on this issue.

Then again, many would say blacks in the south weren't welcome in the all-white schools they were integrated into. Would our school systems be integrated today if the government hadn't forced it so many years ago?

Not a rhetorical question, I'm truly curious as to what others think.

soze [TotalFark] 2007-09-25 03:28:06 PM
Fellows: A landlord that doesn't like you can make your life a living hell, so why would you want to live somewhere where you're not wanted?

Because sometimes it's the least shiatty option, especially in tight markets. If you've got a choice between a landlord who may not like you too much and living with roaches, you take the human filth.

Personally I'm very fortunate in that I have a great landlord and haven't had to make that decision. But it took us months of active searching to find this place, too, and most people don't have that option.

40below [TotalFark] 2007-09-25 03:30:22 PM
Well if I was a landlord, I'd be asking if someone is willing to do that to their skin, what the hell are they going to do to the walls?

Dr.Knockboots [TotalFark] 2007-09-25 03:30:57 PM
In my old city, you knew who was a gang member by an easily identified tat. I wouldn't rent to those people.
Also, in my old city, those with the over the top tats weren't typically the kinds of people that were decent folks anyhow.
Of course there were exceptions. But i'm not taking chances when they highly resemble the bad crowd.
sorry.

to me it has a lot to do with the environment.

That's the kicker. These situations can basically exclude certain people from living in certain areas of the country.

Then again, do we have a right to rental? If nobody will rent to them they're free to buy a home or property. But what if nobody will sell to them either?

At what point does the government step in and say "business have rights, free market and all but these types of business practices go against what America is all about."

And then, what exactly is America all about? Is being able to exclude people you don't like from your area part of the American culture?

This is why I'm not in politics.

Tattoos and piercings don't put you into a protected category.

So, Mr./Miss Individuality, you might want to think twice before using your pizza delivery tips to get that 00 gauge earring or the tribal tattoo on your neck.

Take that money and do something actually lead a productive life.

See, that's the thing I don't get. Why do some people seem to assume that such things as piercings or tattoos preclude one from contributing meaningfully to society?

Yeah, a lot of shiftless farks have (crappy) tattoos and whatnot, but many of them also wear pants. I should refuse to do business with anyone wearing pants.

Really, this isn't a "you just don't understand my beautiful, unique snowflakeyness". I mean, shiat, I don't understand what's wrong with cubs fans. But you better believe I'd take their money, and I wouldn't mind renting to them either so long as they did not display a giant cubs pennant in their window or something.

Actually, I just wanted to toss a dig out there to some of the overly-sensitive tattooed and pierced :)

Personally, I know plenty of successful people with tattoos and piercings.

My point, however, about being careful in how you mark your body still stands. It's not a protected category and, right or wrong, plenty of people will discriminate against and judge you solely based on your tattoos and piercings.

I dig it. I wasn't trying to throw a shiat fit; I've seen you in other threads and I know it's not a biggie. It's more that it seems to be a common sentiment and I'm trying to understand it a little better.

It's profiling pure and simple. And it should be illegal.

If they want to do a real background check, that's what the application fee supposedly covers, right?
