Bah, the Mozart effect is bull, the only study done was mostly invalid and everything based after it was poorly done as well. It's just a ploy used by music teachers trying to save their jobs because they can't remember the other reasons why music is necessary in education.

Yup. Everyone else just sees "Mangenius".

FTA:I didn't know what Warped Tour was until I did a little homework. Is old fogey-dom already my fate?

It has apparently been his fate for a decade or so. The Warped Tour isn't exactly new.

Chabash: Bah, the Mozart effect is bull, the only study done was mostly invalid and everything based after it was poorly done as well. It's just a ploy used by music teachers trying to save their jobs because they can't remember the other reasons why music is necessary in education.

-study of music creates new neural pathways, which means the brain is getting smarter
-study of music improves test scores in other areas, especially math.
-group music performance gives students an opportunity to work together to achieve a goal. Bonus points because it's not intrinsically competitive (like a sports team). You don't need an opponent to be able to work together to succeed at music.
-music and other arts provide a form of expression that cannot necessarily be put in to words. If we, as a society, lose the ability to express ourselves artistically, then a part of our culture will die.

These are the main reasons I use to justify music in education. Although the sports forum isn't probably the best place to say these things. Also, no sources cited because I haven't had to do any research since college, and have become lazy. I wrote a paper on this for some class or other, and this is just what I remember.
