Stupid /. f*cknuts. You start allowing any goddamn retard with an internet connection to submit links to a website, you might as well flush your whole goddamn website down the toilet and go work at Best Buy. Like anything good could possible come of that.

It'll never work.

An idea like that is destined to fail - miserably. I for one, would never take part in a website that allows for such a shoddy method to determine it's content, much less pay for it.

I came here to say Digg as well. It's not like the voting here matters. And we don't have tags. And *ahem* some submitters get paid.

/. is already dead, look at the articles on their main page that have little to do with technology...digg, fark & social bookmarking killed it.

1984 is Coming 2007-08-03 12:41:05 AM
Man I hope slashdot doesn't fall to the level of digg. It seems like the quality has gone down over the last year or two but it is still sooo much better than digg. The comments especially.

The average slashdot poster appears to be a 20-40 year old IT worker. The average digg poster appears to be a 13 year old of below average intelligence.

fanbladesaresharp 2007-08-03 12:41:19 AM

which is all kind of funny because slashdot has been around longer then fark or digg.

All three sites have their uses:

digg -- leftist anti bush information and a bunch of other crap
fark -- satire and humor news without the digg crap
slashdot -- tech news, albeit a day or two late

neither digg or fark can you really trust, but i have little doubt in stories posted on slashdot, except on april 1st.

of the three i have been a visitor/member of slashdot the longest(obvious), but i have not and will not register a login with digg.

CtrlAltDelete [TotalFark] 2007-08-03 12:46:41 AM
I still like Slashdot.

The comments on articles can be pretty insightful sometimes. It's like the anti-YouTube comment section.

keydock 2007-08-03 12:48:21 AM
Slashdot has allowed people to submit and discuss stories forever; it was one of the first sites to do so, long before Fark. What they've done here is create essentially a TotalSlashdot and open it up to everyone, so now you can see and vote on submitted links, although the editors still decide what "goes green". Basically, the /. story selection process is now identical to Fark's in every way, whereas previously it was only identical in some ways.

BrknPhoenix 2007-08-03 12:48:29 AM
I had Slashdot.... Though sadly I visit it everyday. Perhaps out of habit, perhaps because every once and a while they actually do have something interesting. However, the majority of its population are dumb unemployed kids that thing M$ is the devil, anything that isn't opensource sucks and isn't supporting computing, and anyone that doesn't use Linux is an idiot.

Their stupidity is boundless, and yet they think they are so smart at the same time. It's a collision of forces that could well cause a blackhole that sucks in the universe someday.

EJ 2007-08-03 12:48:29 AM

At least half of digg's "programming" submissions are actually spam blogs that either have two sentences and a link to a real article or have nothing to do with programming.

Also, digg lets anybody moderate discussions and stories, whereas /. gives you mod points every once in a while - which one allows for greater abuse?

/I can has mod points?
//Yay, I actually do have points. Time to go mod some trolls down.

I left it long ago. I remember thinking back in 1998 that it was such a cool site. Simple site then. I don't go there anymore, so I can't say what it is now.

Polyhazard 2007-08-03 12:52:11 AM
In many ways I think the system at Slashdot (and Digg, for that matter) can be kind of a repressive thing. On the one hand, it's nice to be able to read a long thread without all the comments that basically say "right on" or are just total trolling. On the other hand, I think sometimes it's a good thing for unpopular views to be read and evaluated by everyone instead of hidden under the digging/modding.

40below [TotalFark] 2007-08-03 12:53:19 AM
Wise_Guy: They don't even read your submissions anymore.

Yeah they do. I have the "Piss off, you're not funny. We have a Google group and after we uploaded your last submissions, we're all laughing at you. ******* in particular thinks you're a dick, he did a hilarious impression of you at the last modmin party. He says DIAF and would like you to have this hip-thrust with a shouted 'boo-yah' [download this video?]."

Ugh, don't bother. $60 a year just so I can plow through the first 800 links that popped into CmdrTaco's head every morning? No thanks, not even for the chance to pretend that I'm special because I pay for the dregs of a free website.

/I kid because I love

DisneyOnIce: What is this slashdot? After looking at the site it is obviously crap.

It's a site labeled for "geeks", but in actuality it's just a bunch of free advertising for Linux and opensource software. If Linux was a man they'd all be sucking it off for free in an alley every chance they could get, just to bask in the warm afterglow.

/vulgar... but true
