Watching this on TV right now. It looks terrible. Looks like the whole thing collapsed into the water and parts over land have buckled as well. There's been pretty major construction going on on this span for the last month or so, don't know if that had anything to do with it. Here's another link: Star Tribune story

Jolonco [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:41:34 PM
I'm watching on TV also, I can't believe that they aren't reporting that any fatalities.

If this had been last week, I would have been on that bridge.

/couldn't be terrorism
//could it?

Quick1 2007-08-01 07:42:53 PM
Police have confirmed at least half a dozen vehicles in the water.

There's a semi truck on fire, I could see they are just getting a hose on it now, there's some concern it may explode.

A bunch of construction has been going on on that bridge, likely contributed to collapse.

Holy shiat is the commute going to be fun tomorrow.

CNN and FOX tv have it right now..... looks horrible.

Troubled bridge over water?

\Sorry

MIGGO 2007-08-01 07:43:20 PM
Christ, that is scary!

pacochu 2007-08-01 07:43:30 PM
This can't be good.

Mr. Anon 2007-08-01 07:43:35 PM
the bridge is old, but this is gonna suck big time as that is one of the major roadways in the cities. Getting places just got a whole lot worse, and it wasn't good to begin with.

Jolonco: /couldn't be terrorism

A viewer called in to channel 5 local news, said he heard a big rumble, and looked out the window to see it collapse. Likely not terrorism.

QUICK! Wednesday needs help!

Fallout Zone 2007-08-01 07:44:40 PM
This is epic. 35W is THE road in Minneapolis.

Best footage on Fox. Its the damndest thing.

nosefruit 2007-08-01 07:44:46 PM
They were replacing the decking. Looks like they failed to calculate the stresses caused by the missing concrete...

knbber2 [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:44:47 PM
Looks like they are getting water on some of the fires, that's something at least.

cpthomas 2007-08-01 07:44:59 PM
I submitted this link with an equally boring headline.

Gsm136 [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:45:00 PM
holy shiat

Pongo 2007-08-01 07:45:18 PM
Wow,

Catching this on the local channels. This is gonna suck for a long time.

Jay Ann 2007-08-01 07:45:29 PM
I drove on that bridge THIS MORNING!

Fleshy 2007-08-01 07:45:32 PM
I was literally 10 seconds out my door heading to 35W (going across the bridge) when my friend called and told me what happened.

Not good. Not good at all.

Quick1 2007-08-01 07:45:50 PM
Two fatalities just confirmed per channel 9 news.

andrewabc 2007-08-01 07:45:55 PM
Have fun with the controversy as to why it fell. This happened in Quebec Canada and killed a couple people last year. Most provinces had to test bridges as the population was trying to figure out how a bridge would fall without any indication (there were indications but they were ignored).

Fallout Zone: This is epic. 35W is THE road in Minneapolis.

Well, that's if you're not counting 494.

Egads! Was that whole lower section in the footage foreground previously at the same elevation as the one in the background? Damn, that's bad...

That is going to be baaaaaad for a long time. Really glad I don't work at Riverplace anymore and hope there isn't family or anyone I know involved in it.

Refreshed before submit and what up.

Hoarf 2007-08-01 07:46:41 PM
I just drove over that bridge around noon today - I think I'm gonna stay home the rest of the night. If anyone needs me, I'll be hiding in a corner of my closet.

knbber2 [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:46:52 PM
Look just like the SF earthquake in the late 80's

DrWebster [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:47:00 PM
This is really, really bad. There are school buses and dozens of cars in the water, and a couple cars and trucks on fire too. It's likely due to the construction they were doing on the bridge; somebody farked up big time.

Jolonco: Well, that's if you're not counting 494.

100 is going to be a huge mess tomorrow, it's the closest north/south highway. Hell pretty much everything is going to be a huge mess tomorrow.

Is anybody else in MSP having a hard time using their cellphone right now?

NotSubby 2007-08-01 07:47:40 PM
I watched live as several terrorists were running from the bridge laughing and yelling abu akbar.

pacochu 2007-08-01 07:47:46 PM
The whole friggin' bridge is in the water. Things are going to be ugly for a long time in Minny.

BalugaJoe 2007-08-01 07:47:53 PM
Did they buy the bridge at Walmart?

szyska 2007-08-01 07:47:59 PM
I wonder if any of the contractors worked on the Big Dig...

Visualingo [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:48:11 PM
Watching live on Fox News. Thanks AT&T Broadband TV!

Mr. Anon 2007-08-01 07:48:24 PM
Jolonco: Well, that's if you're not counting 494.

494 doesn't go through the city of Minneapolis.

mobombhead 2007-08-01 07:48:32 PM
Meh, bodies under the bridge. I mean water. Water under the bridge.

jafiwam 2007-08-01 07:48:33 PM
Is that the one at Prescott or 95 into WI?

stiletto_the_wise 2007-08-01 07:48:36 PM
Those librulz and their socialist government-constructed bridges. If only the free market could have been allowed to prevent this situation. As a small business owner, I disapprove, and weep for those people.

:-)

Norad [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:48:39 PM
Jesus Christ. That is big-time bad news.

Koch 2007-08-01 07:48:43 PM
Outtaphase: Egads! Was that whole lower section in the footage foreground previously at the same elevation as the one in the background? Damn, that's bad...

The bridge in the background is the 3rd street bridge, which may have been a little bit higher, but not much. Minneapolis traffic is going to be crushed for months.

RobertBruce [TotalFark] 2007-08-01 07:49:02 PM
is that a school bus? shiat...

juugcatm 2007-08-01 07:49:05 PM
school bus confirmed :( (Fox news)

bea_arthur: Is anybody else in MSP having a hard time using their cellphone right now?

It's hard to say, I always get bad signal in my house. I've been able to text pretty much everyone though.
