I read this a few days ago. I wondered about the inherited taste thing. It does seem unlikely.

However, my son won't eat fruits and vegetables (except apples) - and I will say that I can't eat fruit at all because I am allergic to it. He's not allergic. I wasn't as a kid. It's a developed allergy connected with pollen.

So I think he doesn't eat fruit or raw veggies because I'm a crappy example to him - and because he's a kid. I hated broccoli, cauliflower, etc. as a kid and now I love them. I just have to have it all cooked or my throat swells.

I don't much buy into inherited taste preference, but I don't really buy into "what they eat in the first couple of years" setting taste prefs either. My kid ate pears like they were suddenly gonna disappear, and he won't touch one now. He ate a lot of stuff as a baby he won't eat now. So...???

I just have to hope his range of foods broadens, and he stays healthy as a starch king! (fortunately, he's very slender and healthy)

Good grief. I'm pregnant. If this kid inherits my pregnant eating habits he will be a big tub of lard. The only thing I can consistently keep down is fast food and pudding. Anything even remotely healthy never looks quite as healthy when I view it again in the toilet. Ugh.

I don't think those programs are that great of an idea either. You're not going to counteract the crappy taste most of their parents have in food by telling them that vegetables are good for them. If their parents consider Applebees a treat to eat at, most likely they eat crap at home--unhealthy crap.

I am, however, in favor of not making ACCESS to unhealthy food at schools so damn simple. Replace pop with healthier alternatives, serve more fresh stuff at lunch, go for low fat alternatives where possible and where taste isn't compromised, etc. Make the choices healthy or healthy. If parents ever got a glimpse of what their child's cafeteria stocks, they'd shiat a brick...that is, unless their freezer is full of the same crap.

Well, if you get all the cool stuff out of the way early on, she has nothing to look forward to. Bet you a dollar she moves in with a 52-year-old scruffy guy in a trailer park by age 19.

The best way to do this is just remove all unhealthy food entirely from the school cafeterias, except perhaps on one day of the week (either Monday or Friday), and then only for dessert. A few schools have tried this and found that while there's a period of painful transition during which all the kids whine and moan, once they get used to healthy eating and the increased energy it brings, they're ok with what's on the menu.

The problem with the programs outlined in the article is not that the kids don't necessarily want good eating habits, it's just that junk food is tempting and always around, and as long as you leave the choice open, a lot of kids are going to take the junk food. What you need instead is fresh-baked bread (not those thin, useless slices you get in a bag from the store), good milk (again, gallon containers, not cardboard cartons - that stuff tastes like crap), cheese, an assortment of deli meats, apples, bananas, grapes, etc. You can also have corn muffins, biscuits, etc. on assorted different days. The key is to have healthy food that tastes good readily available, and no junk food at all, even if that means a little additional cost to the school in the short term. In the long term, of course, what you spend on good food you save on kids not being out of school sick or injured so much, since kids will have better immune systems and stronger bones, plus they'll pay attention better in class and the teachers will want to stick with your school.

I agree with you. I was raised on whole foods. Not hippie sprouts and tofu, but normal, healthy stuff like veg, fruit, chicken, etc. My stepkids were raised by their dad for the first twelve years of their lives, subsisting on convenience foods like Hot Pockets and Pop Tarts. It has been hell, I tell you, trying to introduce "real" food into their diets, but we are slowly making progress.

My wife lived on cantaloupe and chocolate when she was preggers, now my kid's diet evolves around those two foods (or would if she had her way). I wonder if the diet of the kid evolves around what's in the kitchen more. If your cupboards are loaded with junk I doubt the kid is going to want fresh veggies.

If a mom somehow has a genetic-based predisposition to enjoy eating Cheetos and Ring Dings, the child is more likely to have that predisposition as well. If the pregnant mom forces herself to eat alfalfa sprouts and okra, even though she hates them, the child will still tend towards the mom's genetic predisposition.

Although, maybe if the kid grows up seeing her mom eat only alfalfa and okra, she might gravitate towards them as well.

Actually, the San Antonio Social & Health Research Center was referring to a study done on pregnant women who were given anise (licorice) only during their pregnany not before or after. A huge majority of the infants all went for anything that had that smell. I could not find the article as it has timed out on the oecd.org website.

It is saying that in utero eating does have an affect on a childs learned taste and smell. It is not genetics or predisposition,but is a variation of their learning. They can recognise their mothers smell and the voices they heard in utero. I am sure what you have in your cupboards and feed a toddler will have a very lasting impact on his eating habits, though.
