Sigh, Washington only seen as desperate money whores now.... I guess it is very evident.

I really think they should eliminate 1-AA teams playing 1-A teams and go to a format where each school can only schedule two of their opponents per season while the other few is chosen by the NCAA (somehow).

In the past five seasons, Jones' teams have beaten Michigan State, Alabama, Purdue and Arizona State -- an impressive BCS foursome.

ahahaha. ahahahahhahaha. AHAHAHAHHAHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!! impressive? please.

schools don't want to go out there because of the high cost and time-zone difference, not because they're "scared". even with the payouts hawaii gives, and the special NCAA rule that lets them schedule a 13th game to make up for it, travel costs still eat into the profits, and it's a grind.

December 2, 2006-Oregon State 35, Hawaii 32 at Honolulu

Thats one quality ass kicking

It is unfair to expect college kids, responsible for classes, papers, projects, and exams to travel half-way around the world to play a game. Sorry, Hawaii, suck it!!

/Go Gators!!

CU's not scared of Hawaii...we got a home-and-home with them coming up in a few years...nice job of leaving that convenient fact out, TSN...

Right now CU should be scared of everyone. Just the thought of having to play Montana State again will probably give them cold sweats.

I like that Barry Alvarez used to schedule a trip out there once every four years as a vacation for the players.

I only watched one Hawaii game last year, at the very end of the season. Afterward I wished I had watched more of them.

The UH football team makes the U look like the Naval Academy. Biggest bunch of thugs and punks anywhere in college football. Coaches don't want to play there because they are afraid their players will be hurt by cheap shot antics. Watch a UH game and you'll quickly see what I am talking about.

That pre-game savage dance the Rainbow Warriors do is pretty stupid. We should send the USS Boston back over there and teach them some manners.

FWIW, Alabama hasn't been an impressive opponent for anyone since 1992.

You do realize that Alabama only lost 2 games two seasons ago, right?

I wonder if Hawaii is tired of losing 78-0 to BSU.

Sick Old Farker 2007-07-06 08:16:19 AM
I am aware. But I recall 3 of those 10 wins being on last second field goals and 1 coming from a once in a lifetime TD catch by Prothro. Their only impressive win was against an overhyped Gators team.

fubuvsfitch 2007-07-06 09:08:50 AM
You're right, the Tide doesn't roll like it used to. Close and gritty wins are still wins, and I was happy for them that season.

/I hope Coach Fran doesn't run TAMU's program into the ground.

Millzners 2007-07-06 09:09:12 AM
No, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact they play subpar teams (michigan state? perdue?) and force them to play at what feels like 11pm till 2 in the morning to the opposing east coast team.

Yeah because STUDENTS are really at their peak performance then, at 1 in the morning when many have class at 9 or 10am.

This guy can shove a ukealaylee up his ass sideways, come to Beaver stadium on a frosty november night, and we'll show them what a real football game feels like.

Oh, and don't even get me started on their uniforms, they look like a bunch of metrosexual gay-pride marching football wanna be's. Maybe they can ride out of the locker room on a Barbara Striesand float next home game.

This douchebag coach is an attention whore. UH is a glorified highschool team. I can't wait to root against them this year -- oh that's right no one wants to televise their shiathole game at 2am EST.

I am suprised Fran hasn't done better with the Aggies. Seems like he may have turned the corner last season though. Maybe he's getting the players in to run his style of offense.

RTFA. An opposing AD said the cost to play in Hawaii is $350,000. Hawaii offering $750,000 and exposure on either ESPN or FSN. Let me break out my TI-83, minus $350K, add $750K, multiply by math, at least $400K in profit.

Anyway, playing Charleston Southern, ENE Kansas Tech & Little Sisters of the Blind is still tougher than the non-conference schedule of some Top 25 teams(Looking your way Auburn).

Exposure on ESPN or FSN? They play at 2am EST on Sundays. I'm not sure you can call that exposure; it's a god damn miracle they even bother televising it at all, except that they only shows they have to compete with are Shop at Home and the Weather channel.

Make up your mind. If you've done any traveling at all, I'm sure you'll agree that Hawaiian beaches kind of suck compared to their alternatives.

Let's see... Against BCS schools since 2002:

Hawaii has won versus Purdue (2006; 8-6), versus Arizona State (2006; 7-6), versus Michigan State (2004; 5-7), versus Northwestern (2004; 6-6), and versus Alabama (2003; 4-9). Combined record of beaten opponents is 30-33. All games at home.

Hawaii has lost at/versus Alabama (2002; 10-3, 2006; 6-7), at Oregon State (2006; 10-4), at/versus Boise State* (2002-2006; combined 58-7), versus Wisconsin (2005; 10-3), at Michigan State (2005; 5-6), and at Southern Cal (2003, 2005; combined 24-2). Combined record of defeats is 123-32. Games both home and away.

*BSU technically not a BCS school, but they did play in a BCS bowl game

Those are facts. Feel free to check at espn.com (and correct, if necessary). Now for my personal interpretation of that data...

Of course June Jones says, "They come here, we kick their ass, they go home." What did you expect? "The mediocre BCS teams that get fat on wins against cupcakes come to Honolulu, play a competitive football game, and go home with a loss. When we play quality BCS opponents, we get farked in all three holes."

Yes, mediocre schools with coaches living bowl game to bowl game are not interested in playing at Hawaii. Playing Hawaii can only hurt a mediocre school and leave those ADs with a media circus about why their coach still has a job. I think it's safe to say that BCS movers and shakers (Florida, OSU, Texas, Southern Cal, etc.) are not scared to play Hawaii on any field. Why should they travel for $400k when they can reap all the profits from the home game in an 80,000+ stadium?

It's not "fair" that Hawaii should have to play all their BCS opponents on the road. It's hypocritical to say that if Hawaii wasn't scared, they would travel to the Lower 48 to play. However, those are the rules that rising mid-majors have to play with. Boise State did it. Until last year's flop, we took Fresno State somewhat seriously. Until Hawaii can (a) beat Boise State, (b) win their own conference, or (c) beat any decent BCS school on the road, they need to SFTU and back away from the big boys' table.

June Jones is a dirtbag. I'm a long time BSU fan and I love it when we whip them around the field. Even last year when BSU went 13-0, Jones was talking trash about the program and about how overrated BSU was. Their players are dirty thugs, trash talkers, and show no discipline. I was glad to see OSU beat them on the island last year. That being said, they are a pretty good team, and this year they're looking tough.
