(Guardian.com) Interesting "The military banned MySpace but not Facebook. This was a very interesting move because there's a division, even in the military. Soldiers are on MySpace; officers are on Facebook"   (technology.guardian.co.uk) divider line 128

The article is very misleading. The US military didn't ban MySpace. They only banned using it on computers meant for official business. Servicemembers can still access it on other computers.

At least the good guys are on Friendster and the bad guys are on Foester. Otherwise, we'd never tell them apart.

Well, that makes sense, doesn't it? Don't you have to have a college degree to be an officer? Facebook was initially intended for just college students/grads... And from what I've seen on MySpace, it's populated by mouth-breathers reminiscent of the future population, as seen in "Idiocracy".

Not really. The US isn't broadcasting any free wifi over in Iraq. Internet access is controlled whether or not a soldier has a laptop. They do not have access to Myspace.

I just enlisted in the marines and I only have a facebook account. I was sort of hoping to be able to maintain access to it. This makes sense though, because facebook until recently was primarily a college thing, and you need a college degree to be commissioned.

I wasn't aware the U.S. military had started recruiting 14 year old girls and 30-something housewives. We really ARE hard up, aren't we?

Arcanum 2007-06-25 02:00:56 PM
I know hundreds of soldiers and only a handful use myspace. they are not representative of the enlisted "class."

Enlisted folks are less educated and poorer than Officers (though the distinction is especially mild in the US military). However, it is worth repeating that enlisted soldiers are more highly educated and wealthier and come from a background similarly superior than the American public at large (it's not a huge difference, but it is a lie to say the military is comprised of the lowest of our society with no options. (and I admit quality is lower now than it was 6 years ago).

The army is a great place to go to better yourself if you do lack options but are otherwise qualified. But by and large it is a place people go if they believe in the cause of fighting for the things the US generally fights for. The huge proportion of war supporters in the military proves this (when they have a personal incentive to oppose war).

Articles like this imply that the officers are the ruling class. This isn't 1950. Any enlisted soldier who is intelligent can become an officer. It happens everyday.

All soldiers may still watch Fark TV, however. They just choose not to.

Yes they do, there are internet cafes on bases all over Iraq. They can get on Myspace from anyone of these cafes, and most do. they can not though get on from thier goverment work computers.

FaceBook is less littered with spam and spyware crap. If the enlist folk turn to FaceBook, they'll ban it too. Not because of the class division but because of bandwidth, cost of keeping machines healthy and the distraction.

NEWSFLASH - Life sometimes sucks for enlisted men

Graveworks 2007-06-25 02:30:49 PM
They banned myspace because that's the one they saw showing up in their logs often enough to attract a DoD-wide ban. I can assure you most bases have facebook banned as well but it doesn't gather enough attention to rate a DoD banning. And FWIW, I'm an officer and everyone I know, O's and E's, are on myspace.

wmoonfox 2007-06-25 02:31:40 PM

Nonsense. One of my best friends is a naval officer. He's on myspace. This anecdote obviously makes the whole article and everything in this thread wrong.
