I feel kinda bad for her. No 18 year old wants to be leered at by internet guys. It's creepy. (The leering, that is.)

SchlingFo 2007-05-29 07:59:56 AM
I'm going to go the original route and say that I'd let her vault my pole.

SchlingFo 2007-05-29 08:01:33 AM
On topic, she should keep in mind that the ferocity of internet trends is matched only by their short lifespans.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 08:05:54 AM
she's only 18? I didn't realize that.

This morning I coined a new phrase to describe this young lady (or at least I think I did -- don't think I copied it from anyone): I-List Celebrity. Other I-List Celebrities who come to mind:

Peter Pan Guy
Tron Guy
Crazy Sweater Lady
Chinese Backstreet Boy Singers
Numa Numa Guy
Starwars Kid

You are an I-List celebrity if:

1. You become famous through the internet
2. You become famous only through the internet, and not because of some real-world talent / performance / publicity
3. Mainstream media picks up on how famous you've become through the internet.

At this point, I fear Ms. Stokke qualifies.

Who are other I-List Celebs?

Radioactive Ass [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 08:50:50 AM
Who would have thought that a pretty 18 year old in skimpy clothes who broke records in a sport might draw attention to herself?

/welcome to the price of fame

absoluteparanoia 2007-05-29 08:53:01 AM
Warthog: 2. You become famous only through the internet, and not because of some real-world talent / performance / publicity

She doesn't really fit number 2. She actually accomplished something.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 08:55:23 AM
Was it wrong of me not to have heard of her before?

Humean_Nature [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 08:56:45 AM
How did I completely miss this? I had to google it right now, and then the irony of it all just hit me.

absoluteparanoia, She doesn't really fit number 2. She actually accomplished something.

I would suggest that she fits #2 perfectly. Her real-world talent (which is significant, and sadly overlooked by most of her "fans") has nothing to do with her becoming an internet celebrity. You mean to tell me that more than about 5 of the 300,000 basement dwelling mouth breathers who popularized this young lady like her and follow her for her pole vaulting skills? No. Her fame is purely internet based, and linked to her looks alone. If she'd just been an amazing pole vaulter, but not very attractive, I think the world would have left her alone.

patrick767 [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 09:12:36 AM
Wow, life must suck when you're too attractive. We plain looking and even downright ugly bastards have it good. Yeah...

ComicBookGuy 2007-05-29 09:23:15 AM
Somehow, I don't think she'd mind 20 year old Orlando Bloom clones w/large personal fortunes checking her out over the internet. I'm sure she's every bit as superficial as the rest of us.

UberDave: Welcome to life. My advice - Roll with it.

The problem becomes those people that take it too far -- stalkers and the like.

You shouldn't have to fear for your personal safety because someone on the Internet took a liking to you. You also shouldn't have to worry that maybe being good at something might turn out to become detrimental to your daily well being.

She's hot and she's great at what she does. Why does it have to go further than that?

SchlingFo 2007-05-29 10:56:41 AM
Triaxis,

Part of my life includes looking at pictures of hot chicks on the internet.

I'm not going to stop just because a lot of other people are looking at her pictures, too.

/I'd hit it like she owed me money

hockeyfarker [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 10:56:50 AM
FTA: At 5 feet 7, Stokke has smooth, olive-colored skin and toned muscles. In the photo, her vaulting pole rests on her right shoulder. Her right hand appears to be adjusting the elastic band on her ponytail. Her spandex uniform -- black shorts and a white tank top that are standard for a track athlete -- reveals a bare midriff.

I'm sorry, Mr. Stokke.

Hadn't heard of or seen her until this morning when I saw this article and a picture on the FRONT PAGE of the Washington Post. What the hell? As if this is going to make the problem go away? It's only making it worse, not to mention it only shows how low the media will stoop... Front page news my ass!

Warthog

Come now, I think many people on the internet are aware of her pole vaulting skills. I'm sure many of them fantasize daily about it. Because...y'know...poles...

In seriousness, I will admit her curious form of infamy has brought the overall hotness of pole vaulters to my attention. They were doing a public pole vaulting display at a State Fair and yup, just like Female Tennis Players, they were all pretty hot. Which isn't her point, I know, but I'm just saying.

I agree with the other posters though. Yes, people only like you for your body. You can either protest this or make twenty million in sponsorship fees. In either case you'll be forgotten soon enough.

/really, the pole vaulting jokes just don't get old

gweilo8888 2007-05-29 11:02:20 AM
Frankly, if she doesn't like the attention then she should purchase some clothes that fit - not clothes that would only properly fit a four year old.

Her dad's a lawyer, so I'm sure she can afford to purchase a wardrobe that doesn't flaunt the wares quite so openly.

SchlingFo 2007-05-29 11:02:21 AM
klatubaradanikto,

Yeah, this chick goes beyond just "cute".

She, in my opinion, is up there on the Monica Belluci level of hotness.

You mean not without twenties being stuck into her g-string.

cotb [TotalFark] 2007-05-29 11:05:19 AM
FTFA:As the sun set Friday night, Stokke positioned her pole as if she were jousting and sprinted about 100 feet toward the bar. She ran on her tip-toes, like she'd learned from ballet. As she approached her mark, Stokke bent her pole into the ground and coiled her legs to her chest. She lifted upward, twisting her torso 180 degrees as she passed over the bar. It was a beautiful clearance, and the crowd stood to applaud.

That's hawt.

Captain_Cool 2007-05-29 11:05:56 AM
She'll be forgotten about as fast as she was "discovered". She should STFU and go about life as normal, this will blow over fast provided she keeps her mouth shut and avoids the press.

In all fairness, the pics of her are her competing in an athletic event, so she dressed accordingly. She's probably wouldn't be breaking too many records in a burka and comfortable flats.
