The sign on the front door that says "Gay Bar" isn't working ?

What do you get when you're gay?

Made fun of.

thamike 2007-05-27 05:18:10 PM
I am not familiar with Aussie laws, but I would imagine that the Equal Opportunity Act deals with employment, not clientele. Just as in the US, any bar or restaurant may refuse business to anybody for any reason, if it so wishes.

thamike 2007-05-27 05:18:45 PM
And for a society as homophobic as Oz, I am not surprised.

Well, any reason so long as it has nothing to do with their race, ethnicity, disability, or gender.

Haha--suck it, cons.

Or you'll have to leave this establishment.

If I can't go out to Denny's for dinner and then over to the local gay bar for a few beers I guess I'll just have to do something else on Saturday night.

Maybe I'll just stay home and shave my head with a cheese grater while chewing on tinfoil.

All they would have to do is enact a dress code:

No white laces,
No Doc Martens,
No bomber jackets,
No braces,
No band T-shirts,
No Russel Crowe

That statement could hardy be further from the truth. Tell some guy he can't come in because he's black and see what happens.

Bar lesbians aren't typically the fun kind of lesbians. The fun kind are the ones who get tipsy in a hetero bar, then get topless and make out with their female friends.

Oh wait, those aren't fun either when one of them is your girlfriend.

Ron1 2007-05-27 06:35:25 PM
I want to take you to a gay bar...

Tell some guy he can't come in because he's black and see what happens.

That still happens in some places. And vice versa. The difference here is that straight people and gay women were coming in and causing trouble with the gay men. The owners are trying to stop a fight from happening. All he has to do is declare it a private club for gay men only. Perfectly legal. You do see the difference between this and say, the same thing occurring at a roadside Denny's don't you?

It's wrong. Businesses cannot refuse service to anypne for any reason.

Aww, you're so sweet.

You could have made the most of it though... just saying

Well...the times I got dragged along as the DD(i don't drink), that stuff never happened! But when I didn't go, I always had people from work coming up to me the next day saying things like 'your girlfriend has great tits, dude!' and whatnots.

/Strangely, the only time I've ever had fun at a bar was one time we went to a local gay bar
//I got hit on quite a bit, it was rather cool

No. "Private" clubs still have to follow antidiscrimination laws where I live as long as provide goods or services for money. Remember the story about that guy who built a smoking-allowed bar in Wales but wasn't allowed to charge money for admission or drinks? Same principle -- you can't beat the system by saying "it's private." You have to go further and say "it's private and noncommercial."

I don't think the government should prohibit sexual orientation discrimination.

Indeed I am. After losing two women to bar-related issues, I've decided my future ladies must be non-drinkers and non-dancers. No more public drinking and freak dancing, dammit!

/Is it so hard to be sophisticated and drink fine wines and take ballroom dancing lessons with me?

Epsilon: This doesn't seem right, but it's in Australia, so who cares.

Australians probably care. As should Americans, as Australia is just slightly to the right of where the US stands on such things, and far to the left of where many Americans want the US to be.

thamike 2007-05-27 08:29:18 PM
ZAZ--Well, they did. And if it avoids violence, then I am all for it. Besides, only troublemakers would be die hard about getting into a place where they are obviously not wanted. It doesn't sound like anybody, besides the media, is making a big stink about it.

Just because sexual orientation and skin-colour happen at birth doesn't make them the same thing, especially in this venue. It is a venue for gay men to hook up. A bunch of tittering fag hags and snarling queer bashers shouldn't be welcome, if the proprietor and target clientele so wish. This court decision is, after all, in light of many occasions when the minority was making the majority very uncomfortable, through discriminatory acts. Allowing them to admit people at the door based on their sexual orientation and gender is much cleaner and more efficient than merely allowing the bouncer to kick troublemakers out on an a la carte basis.

Abelian Groupie 2007-05-27 08:53:16 PM
I just thought that everyone might like to know that as a heterosexual caucasian able-bodied middle-class male I feel that I am profoundly discriminated against by modern politically-correct society.

RugbyJockey, quit running politics in Australia!

nationalism 2007-05-27 08:55:38 PM
This is similar to bars in my local area that attempt to ban blacks because they "cause a disturbance". They have hilarious ways to ban black people since they can't outright do it.

Nathan Farr 2007-05-27 08:55:56 PM

like he says its australia so no we dont care

australia is so irrelevant its laughable

Holly_Wight 2007-05-27 08:56:59 PM
I'm not sure I agree with this. Part of the fun of LGBT bars is partying with the few straights who are open-minded and know a good time when they see it.

Besides-- How do you prove you're gay to a bouncer if you're there to find a mate? You can't just kiss the nearest person of the same gender; That's rude. I don't see how they could enforce this.

I've been to plenty of gay bars, and the queer-bashers stay outside. I've lost friends to just such a situation, but I wouldn't take that as an excuse to get all clandestine and keep the good straight people out of the bar. Not all straight people are queer bashers or faghags. Some are just friends with gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered people-- Imagine that!

BravadoGT [TotalFark] 2007-05-27 08:57:43 PM
Does this mean that fag hags have to be lesbians to tag along?

I agree with you! I was thinking the same, how would they know if you`re straight or gay? It doesnt make much sense.

I dont mind gay bars, if you`re a female you dont get hit on by drunken dudes.

/goes to gay bars with the girls
//especially when the bf is sick

Wrong, wrong, wrong! That is the *worst* kind of attention whoring- putting on a show for the boys. It's not honest; it's not sexy.

It's like me whipping it out and you sucking it to impress the ladies...

chaoswolf 2007-05-27 09:02:49 PM
I'm going the other way with this. I think it should be allowed across the board, especially here in America.

Bars for the blacks, whites, mexicans, gays, nerds, emos, skinheads, etc, etc. You're either "in" or you stay out.

It would solve a lot of late night garbage methinks.

Of course, you'll also want some bars open to everyone for people like me that generally hate everyone. I mean... we non-discriminating folk. Yea. That's it.

fruedianslippers 2007-05-27 09:03:26 PM
Man, I've had a BLAST at the gay bars I've been to. It was so much fun to be in a different environment where it didn't matter wtf your orientation was. Damn gawkers better not ruin gay bars in the US next. I'd rather party with gays than frat boys with striped shirts quoting Borat all night.
