If they pull out the tired old banana as the atheist's nightmare trick, this will be a short debate.

JimmyTheHutt 2007-04-26 01:59:15 PM
Good luck with that, Kirk.

Seriously, you should have stuck with being Mike Seaver. You still haven't paid for removing your hot wife from circulation.

I always thought that it was Chelsea Noble who converted him.

I just skimmed TFA but who are they debating?

Silvara [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:01:44 PM
I'm guessing that, as always, that their idea of 'science' will be quite far from what it actually is.

Silvara [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:02:27 PM
Errr, minus that extra "that" in there.

fletchtone [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:02:38 PM
And there's the other gem of reason and logic, the peanut butter video. Does anyone actually believe that nonsense?

mauve'bib [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:03:03 PM
"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."

"But," says Man, "Ray Comfort proves that You exist, and so therefore, by Your own arguments, You don't. Q.E.D."

"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

Next week, Boner explains where we go when we die.

I can't wait for his "undeniable proof that God exists" to appear in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

OlafTheBent [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:03:53 PM
My Spidey sense starts to tingle whenevr anyone says "I'll prove it... just not right now."

Why the suspense?

I hope it's the banana thing again.

Kirk Cameron - unequivocally, undeniably, an idiot of the first degree. Way to go, pal.

People that seek to prove faith using science are as nutty as the ones who try to prove science using faith.

RocketRod [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:05:20 PM
So..? I saw a TV show that says they know who the next top model is going to be. Don't make it true.

albo [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:06:12 PM
the more science discovers about the way the world works, the smaller god becomes until he is truly just the god of the few gaps in our knowledge.

at this point, he's just not needed as an explanation of why the world works. the only reason people hold on to him is that they are afraid of dying and that being it.

mediaho 2007-04-26 02:08:57 PM
Seriously, I don't expect great journalism from christiannewswire.com but they don't even mention the names of the people they're debating (just "the two originators of the 'Blasphemy Challenge'") or give any of their arguments (unlike Cameron/Comfort)

BTW, is this Comfort guy the same guy sitting with Kirk in that video talking about the banana?

"Evolution is unscientific. In reality, it is a blind faith that's preached with religious zeal as the gospel truth. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was once a naïve believer in the theory."

I've never understood this line of thought. "It's ok for me to have blind faith, but not you. NYAH!"

JimmyTheHutt 2007-04-26 02:14:57 PM
szmike: I always thought that it was Chelsea Noble who converted him.

That makes it worse. He denied us the opportunity to corrupt her :).

The Banana points (my points in ital):

1. Is shaped for human hand. Apes too. We evolved from them.
2. Has non-slip surface.
3. Has outward indicators of inward content:
Green-too early,
Yellow-just right,
Black-too late. So does every thing. Even people. Skin is perfect at birth, weathered as we age, and grays after we die until it rots.
4. Has a tab for removal of wrapper
5. Is perforated on wrapper
6. Bio-degradable wrapper. It's a plant!
7. Is shaped for human mouth. So is a cock, then?
8. Has a point at top for ease of entry. Uh, where exactly are you putting this banana?
9. Is pleasing to taste buds. I've met numerous people that can barely hold their lunch at the smell, let alone the taste of bananas.
10. Is curved towards the face to make eating process easy. Unless you hold it the wrong way. And curved cocks.

Most of my spiritual faith and scientific knowledge is rooted in the teachings of the guy that played Skippy on "Family Ties," but I'm willing to branch out and give Kirk Cameron a shot.

HulkHands: The Banana points (my points in ital):

Simple disproof of banana proof of God.

Bananas are seedless and sterile. They are genetic mutants so that any seeds produced are small and inviable. They only reproduce by grafting. Yeah sounds like a viable plant to grow in the wild to me. Bananas are a prime example of man's impact on wild species. Just like seedless grapes and watermelon, bananas too are a product of man and not God.

I heard that when they were doing the show, Kirk Cameron could have gotten more ass than a toilet seat but turned it down.

It was Alan Thicke who stepped up and was banging girls left and right.

/and what's-her-name was puking backstage.

Hey, I click on someone's text to cut and paste and it highlights all the text in the thread. anyone else have that problem?
/OT

i wanted to cut and paste and respond to czarangelus by saying that's probably a brain screwup and we'll probably eventually be able to explain religious rapture or visions as a biological function of the brain.

mungo 2007-04-26 02:30:57 PM
FTA: "The popular actor stated, "Evolution is unscientific. In reality, it is a blind faith that's preached with religious zeal as the gospel truth. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was once a naïve believer in the theory. The issue of intelligent design is extremely relevant at the moment. Atheism has become very popular in universities--where it's taught that we evolved from animals and that there are no moral absolutes. So we shouldn't be surprised when there are school shootings.

So... Darwin is responsible for Virginia Tech?! Will these coonts stop at nothing to promote their bilge?

/And no, there are no moral absolutes, but you don't need a God to know that killing, raping and stealing are wrong (unless they are done in the name of God, of course)

Silvara [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:33:24 PM
Happens to me too albo. And in response to what you said, they've already done that with "out of body" and "near death" experiences by doing studies of brain activity while people are in heart surgery where they have to stop the heart.

If you haven't read it already, you might like the book "Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife" by Mary Roach.

/they're all going to hell!

Postal Penguin 2007-04-26 02:37:51 PM
And can someone religious explain the argument that morals dont exist without God? Isn't it possible that for the collective good for the species we decided going around murdering people was bad? I mean our morals change and so does religion. Hell the church used to think murdering heretics and burning them at the stake was A-OK. Our morals are fluid and dynamic, changing in a feedback loop with society. Religion just amplifies them and preaches them. Human morals have been around for a lot longer than modern religion.

mungo 2007-04-26 02:38:45 PM
hulk hands

It's also worth noting that they are looking at a domesticated banana, whereas whild varieties vary considerably.

It's also worth noting that the banana itself has evolved to facilitate being eaten (like many fruits) - for example, changing color when the seeds inside have matured to the point where they are ready to pass through some animals gut and be delivered to another part of the forest in a nice little packet of fertiliser.

But why lett a little bit of common sense like that get in the way of the 'proof' of God?

/And anyway, which God?!! It is equal 'proof' for all of them, y'know...

HumbleGod 2007-04-26 02:38:51 PM
Reasonable Christians probably recognize that Cameron is setting the bar way to high with such statements, and that he's opening up his religion to further mockery when his "undeniable scientific proof" crumbles under intelligent scrutiny.

Just accept it: science and reason have little or nothing to do with religion. Quit trying to pretend otherwise.

FTFA: In Europe the rise of atheism and agnosticism is stunning, where according to a Zukerman study, in Sweden as many as 85% of the population are non-believers, Japan 65%, France 54% and in Britain 44% do not believe in God.

There's hope yet.

Lorelle [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:53:20 PM
Why would so many be so bitter against Christianity in particular? Why aren't they making videos that blaspheme Buddha or Mohammed or Ghandi?

Because the majority of those who follow the teachings of Buddha, Mohammed, or Ghandi aren't trying to shove their beliefs down our throats.

patrick767 [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 02:54:36 PM
85%? Hurray! I'm moving to Sweden!
/non-believers means extra helpings of debauchery right? woohoo!

"undeniable scientific proof that God exists"

I've always wondered about that!

Boritom [TotalFark] 2007-04-26 03:35:04 PM
It's really kind of sad, they all waste so much energy trying to convince people that a book of parables and metaphores is supposed to be some kind of literal history of the human race. That's like basing an entire society on the works of Dr. Seuss.

If they spent less time bludgeoning "non-believers" over the head with what the Bible says, and spent more time introspectively assimilating what the Bible means, their credibility would soar through the roof!

Tackboard 2007-04-26 03:35:51 PM
The peanut butter video was kinda scary. I thought that maybe the peanut butter that "evolved" into a King Combra.

What's he going to use? Bananas? Peanut butter? Peanut butter and banana sandwiches?

I was gonna go with the babel fish explanation, but I can see you guys are taking life WAY too seriously for the likes of me. Go find some pot and smoke it.
