Yeah, you should be able to vote for that option.

Dear Jerk 2007-04-24 01:14:26 AM
Hey Grover, I got a new idea!

smashure 2007-04-24 01:17:08 AM
It'll still be needed to be recounted

Sun God [TotalFark] 2007-04-24 01:21:00 AM
Maybe we should change our system. Our vote wouldn't indicate which candidate we wanted most. It would indicate which candidate we liked the least. The one who got the most votes would lose.

You'd be crazy to vote for anyone that wants to hold office in Florida.

Canadian Canuck [TotalFark] 2007-04-24 01:28:17 AM
Just write something on the ballot, it counts as spoiled.

/saw the weirdest things scruitineering

LordPistachio 2007-04-24 01:46:00 AM
We can only hope they all choose that option.

Troggie42 [TotalFark] 2007-04-24 02:00:51 AM
then what the hell is the point of even leaving the house? this is farking stupid.

oh yeah. florida. my bad.

Jabber 2007-04-24 02:09:08 AM
I would like a "None of the Above" option instead.

totalsecurity 2007-04-24 02:38:52 AM
If you choose not to decide, you've still have made a choice.

Bonzo_1116 2007-04-24 02:42:59 AM
I think that's the best choice Floridians could possibly make.

totalsecurity wins the thread.

Only if Montgomery Brewster is running....

Dirk Farkly 2007-04-24 08:28:14 AM
I agree with Jabber. In the UK, they assume that low voter turnout is because people can't be arsed to go out and vote, not because there's no one worth voting for on the ballot.

SteelHorseRider 2007-04-24 08:29:01 AM
I showed up to either make a Rush Freewill reference or a Brewster's Millions reference.

Ahhh fark, you never let me down.

Alonjar 2007-04-24 08:29:15 AM
I'm pretty sure this isnt so you can go to the voting station and simply not vote at all... its that usually when you go to vote, you vote for MORE than one office at a time.

So rather than voting for the president, for example, and then just either going R or D down the sheet, or randomly punching in votes, you can just opt out on the offices you dont have a preference on.

Hairball_Barfer 2007-04-24 08:31:41 AM
then what the hell is the point of even leaving the house? this is farking stupid.

presumably there is more than one race on the ballot.

Better yet would be "None of the Above" and if that "wins" then there is a new election with all of the previous candidates prohibitted from running.

zolividor 2007-04-24 08:37:10 AM
It'd be a good idea if it was a "no confidence" choice. And to win, a candidate must beat "no confidence" as well as any opponent.

FuzzplugJones 2007-04-24 08:38:00 AM
Alonjar: I'm pretty sure this isnt so you can go to the voting station and simply not vote at all... its that usually when you go to vote, you vote for MORE than one office at a time.

Yeah seriously.. you'd have to be a real self-important conspiracy theorist to go to a voting station to not vote.

Personally, I think if you vote "I don't vote" you win a complementary one-way plane ticket out of the country. There are so many little candidates running, and there's always the Libertarian Party... not to mention that most people who don't want to vote for the major parties would vote for a communist if they only knew one was running (usually three or four are). If you can't find someone to vote for, you're not paying attention. And you'd think with all the time people have to flame and criticize, they'd have a few hours to look over some alternate candidates and make a decision.

theFword 2007-04-24 08:41:28 AM

FuzzplugJones: I think if you vote "I don't vote" you win a complementary one-way plane ticket out of the country.

So if someone without kids really doesn't have a preference between the two candidates running for school trustee in their area, and they'd like to leave the selection of that office to those who are most affected by it, you think they should be deported for selecting "I choose not to vote".

Vote even if you aren't informed! Or be shipped out of the country!

See that is an excellent way to distinguish between people who are too lazy and those who are too disgusted.

My bet is that young people will still not show up.

Jabber: I would like a "None of the Above" option instead.

In addition to the None of the Above option, Id like to add that if "None of the Above" got the majority of the votes in the election, then any of the candidates running would be ineligible to hold any public office, ever again. Or taken out and shot..not sure which, actually...

/me ponders.

# of Registered Voters - # of Votes Cast = "I Choose Not to Vote"

There. Now give me my government contract.

dj_spanmaster 2007-04-24 08:53:36 AM
jabber, Dirk Farkly

From what I've read about the proposed legislation, that's the intent. Yes, I live in FL; and yes, I like this idea.

Kaiser Bill's Batman 2007-04-24 08:53:48 AM
In the last presidential election here in Kentucky, Bush "won" but more eligible voters didn't go to the polls than actually voted for him. I call that a resounding win for "None of the above."

Max Danger Power [TotalFark] 2007-04-24 08:54:35 AM
I like what Hairball-barfer suggested. Even though I consider myself Libertarian/Republican, I don't vote for either one of them because the Libertarians tend to be so damn nutty you couldn't possibly want them in a position where they have to deal with other people, especially in foreign affairs and the Republican party is full of liars, crooks, cheats, and panderers, not too dissimilar from the Democrats. Frankly I have no party alliance, I just vote for the candidate who is best, not the least evil. I think some long term reevaluation of voting, the party system, punditry, and pre-election shenanigans is long over due and perhaps a massive quantifiable vote of "no confidence" would send that message.

\or maybe I am still clinging to some last vestige of hope for change.

hangover grenade 2007-04-24 08:55:12 AM
Without forcing a runoff, this is a pointless gesture. The candidate with the highest number of votes still wins.

I am changing my name to "I choose not to vote," and moving to Florida:)

How the typical ballot should be phrased.

Choose one:
_ Asshat A
_ Asshat B
X None of the Above

ChristmasOnMars 2007-04-24 08:58:55 AM
Blah. When I can't stand the candidates (which most of the time), I write someone in. I wrote in Wolford Brimley for president last time, if I remember correctly. I firmly believe he'd be a better president than Bush or Kerry.

The Bush v. Kerry ballot was like choosing between two clowns. Do you want Bozo or Howdy Doody? Crap, that election was such an embarrassment.

I want to show that I vote, but that I won't vote for corrupt neocons (Repugs), privileged idiots (Democraps), or wacko third party goons.

Choosing politicians from the ballot is like choosing cancers. How do you want America to die? Pick your disease and watch it happen.

I suggest the following:

Choose one:
_ Asshat A
X Asshat B
X Please have my selection thrown into a volcano.

See, abstaining from voting has always been an option here. Then again, we don't vote for our sherrifs and dog catchers either...

Huh. I'd say about 1/4 of the races in the last election were uncontested here. Out of principle, I do not cast a votes in those races.
