I oppose this invidious stealth tax by not owning a car. Hah! tax me now, Plod!

/wait

Not owning a car ?
Hah you pay tax so that the rest of us can drive on well paved roads. That'll learn you.

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2007-04-22 04:17:34 PM
That might cut down on auto-theft statistics. Just count the people who pay.

Do you get the money back if they dont find the thiefs?

Sounds like a great day for British car theives!

"So you're saying that the police won't actually try to catch anybody stealing cars now? Brilliant!"

Gosling [TotalFark] 2007-04-22 05:40:03 PM
ATTENTION BRITISH CAR THIEVES: If you take the victim's car AND all of their money, they won't be able to afford to go to the police and you can get away scot-free!

nm [TotalFark] 2007-04-22 05:41:01 PM
Don't they already charge you for storing and towing if your car is recovered in the US? I'll bet that costs at least $200.

grackle 2007-04-22 05:42:04 PM
Ah, the nanny surveillance state and the libertarian ideal coincide. How ironic is that.

Yeah, and from what I hear, most of the time they're the ones that stole it.

No one better try to steal my British cars or they will end up on a gun-control forum....

Step 2: Strip it of parts
Step 3: PROFIT!

/Yes, I know you profit already when you steal someone's car.

So, they become a Big Brother nanny state, but still won't have the police do their jobs?

I love Europe.

[Enderski: Do you get the money back if they dont find the thiefs?]

ha ha ha, you are quite the comedian. I sincerely doubt if you get the money back if they DO find the thieves. And God forbid you catch someone stealing your car and try to stop them! You had better just give them enough petrol money so they can get all the way to a decent chop shop.

/It's sad watching British society disintegrate.
//At least in the US you can still defend yourself and/or kill your attacker.

Apparently you have to pay extra for the "forensicating" in Britain ... although here in the states it's a value-added service.

Sir Simon Milligan 2007-04-22 05:57:19 PM
Chris Haslam, a travel writer from north London, said he was "flabbergasted" when he reported his Land Rover stolen last week and was told of the "new service". The alternative was that he would be given the car's location if it was found and he could "retrieve it himself".

so how long until someone is beaten and murdered when they go to retrieve the car themselves.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2007-04-22 06:02:34 PM

About a week. The family of that victim should probably just forget about going to the police and go straight to the media.

Everyone involved in this scheme, top to bottom, should be indicted for receiving bribes. No exceptions.

Ronin_S 2007-04-22 06:04:55 PM
Okay, this is just a bad idea, period. You're going to eventually wind up with a situation like in Mexico, where the police won't do shiat unless you pay them, and criminals who do even the most serious crimes can get out if they bribe the police and jail with enough money.

This should have a scary tag.

evil saltine 2007-04-22 06:13:03 PM
It's not like they would have investigated it anyway (at least in the U.S.).

The Ravaging Ungulate 2007-04-22 06:18:16 PM
Society is going to Hell in a hand basket. People knowing that the police will not protect them will have to protect themselves and otherwise law-abiding citizens will have to take the law into their own hands.

How soon before the police in the UK (and in the US) start thinking of how to get more revenue? Instead of being years away, it's a matter of months away as to when house burglaries will have a charge as well and any other crime to be investigated. Does this take bribing to a legal level now? Have cops in the UK been bribed and now this makes it legitimate? Will the police become a contracted out job?

How soon will it be before only the rich will be able to afford legal protection? It's already that way in Russia.

Gargoyle 2007-04-22 06:18:28 PM
Huray for the UK and personal responsibility!

It's about time that the taxpayer paid his fair share for some of these government services.

SpacePunk 2007-04-22 06:24:44 PM
Nice, and a la carte justice system, and they still get the privelidge of paying taxes.

pureobscure 2007-04-22 06:25:30 PM
As ridiculous as this idea sounds, it's really not all the different in America. When a stolen car is recovered the local police call whatever tow company bribed them enough to be on the list, who then charges outrageous fees to the poor person whose car was stolen. And in America the police don't even PRETEND to try to pursue the perpetrator.

Unfortunately I know this first hand.

Nothing new. My mother's car was stolen from he Staten Island Mall in the '80s when I was a little kid. We lived in Manhattan. Someone who did not identify themselves as a cop but turned out to be one anyway called her around midnight and said "we found it in such-and-such auto repair at this address in shady McSketchy land. You can go get it." The police seemed more than a little shocked that she expected them to get it for her, then they did so reluctantly.

I don't think searching it for clues was ever even an option.

Haha when my car got stolen in Bronx, NY, there was NOTHING i could do to get the police to investigate. I did my own investigation and found out who stole it, and had the tool they used to steal it. The police STILL refused to investigate.

Electrify 2007-04-22 06:51:16 PM
I'm surprised so many of you are against this. Considering many of you are American and are against public health care, I don't understand why you should be in favour of public police services.

/why should my tax dollars be used for some moron who cannot afford a car with an anti-theft device?

Nah. Fark only ever posts that kind of story about Britain. It's almost unheard of for them to post anything good about the UK. Very rare indeed. If it did the same to America, I hate to think what the reaction would be, but the UK is considered fair game.

It gives an amazingly warped view. I'm always astounded by the bizarre opinions people have about England on Fark.

I was billed by the police when I was in a motorcycle accident. $240 each for two police cars and $80 each for two cops. This was Radnor township Pennsylvania. They started billing non residents when the police responded to accidents. They got so much bad press they stopped and gave anyone who payed their money back.

Dallas cops won't respond to alarms in homes and businesses. If you can't afford to pay for private protection, you are own you own.

If the alarm at your business goes off, you go to the business yourself, and you find someone inside robbing the place, then you can call the cops and they will respond. Of course, by that time, most thieves have had plenty of time and will be leaving. The cops will show up 30--60 minutes later, if you are lucky, and you have to sit around and wait for them.

The cops also do anything they can to avoid reporting crime. A friend of mine drives an 18 wheeler. Just before christmas, he was out of state driving his rig. His pickup truck was parked at his daughters apartment complex. That gives her an extra vehicle if she needs it, and gives him a place to park where she can keep an eye on it. The pickup got stolen. She called him, he told her to call the cops and report it. She called the cops, and they refused to file a report because she wasn't the owner. She called her dad back, and he called the cops. They refused to take a report from him because he was out of state. They know damn well that a crime has been committed, but it's easier for them to do nothing than to do their job, and if they don't file reports on crimes, then the official crime rate statistics look better than if they tell the truth.

All they do anymore is write speeding tickets and such. Real crimes, they do their best to avoid.
