My mother, a Brooklyn Dodgers fan who saw Robinson play at Ebbets Field would be pleased, if not for the LA on the cap.

/50 years since the Dodgers left Brooklyn and she is still mad.

Repeat. But with a better headline.

In related news, Juan Pierre will refuse to sit at the back of the bench.

As the subby of the original article (the one about Griffey), I came here to say the same thing.

So the answer really is 42. Hmmm

The NY papers are saying Mariano Rivera is going to show his respect that day as well.

Every other team will pick a player to wear 42 that day.

Another shining example of political correctness falling all over itself ...

First, you say nobody can wear #42 ever again so you can "honor" Jackie Robinson - now, you tell everybody to wear #42 so you can "honor" Jackie Robinson. WTF?

I bet if he came back from the grave, he'd tell Bud Selig and everyone else to fark the hell off, and just remember his legacy.

/Just shut up and color the Easter eggs!

"Your attention, please, There's been a slight change to the Teatotaler lineup. Catching, Bugs Bunny. Left field, Bugs Bunny. Right field, Bugs Bunny. Pitching, Bugs Bunny. Third base, Bugs Bunny. Center field, Bugs Bunny. First base, Bugs Bunny. Shortstop, Bugs Bunny. Second base, Bugs Bunny."

/first thing I thought of.

Isn't it kind of sad that no-one bothers to honor the guy who signed Jackie Robinson?

tdpatriots Why? It's just another WHITE man trying to make a dollar off a BLACK man.

But seriously; yes, Branch Rickey should be just as big of a household name. Mahatma gets no respect.

This may be the event that finally sends Vin Scully into retirement.

But man, I hope not.

god i wish something like this would happen in a basketball game or something, where due to the speed of the game, everyone would be thoroughly confused for the whole game.

Football would be fun: "penalty on #42. I don't know which one, but it was one of 'em!"

the only chance to mess everything up is to put a surprise pinch hitter out there that bats from the same direction...or else you can make people think that some guy is a switch-hitter.

uhh no. As one of the historical greats his number was retired by the league. Now since it's 60 years since he first played in the majors everyone on what was his team, the Dodgers, will wear his number for a game. It's honoring history, nothing more.

I also look forward to the day the NHL does this for Gretzky.

Maybe they can have the Oilers play the Kings and both teams can have EVERYONE wear #99.

I feel bad for the announcers, though. :(

yeah that would be tough, and can you imagine the ref? "Hooking on 99...".

damageddude...well, the two teams that had him after he was awesome can play.

Blues vs Rangers...everyone can wear 99 on that one too. They can make it a TV doubleheader.

"Every other team will pick a player to wear 42 that day"

I heard Dan Patrick today kind of giving Garret Anderson of the Angels a hard time because Anderson didn't want to "jump on Griffey's bandwagon" and wear number 42. There's been talk on ESPN radio this week about the declining number of black baseball players for various reasons, so I kind of wonder...is there a MLB team that does not have an African American player? If so, who do they pick to wear number 42?
