(Some Guy) Obvious You cannot simply put all the blame on the media for lying to to the public when the fact is that the public often WANTS to be lied too. Don't like it? Quit buying it   (alternet.org) divider line 26

We can't just blame the media alone for not telling the truth -- we've got to face the fact that audiences are paying to hear those lies.

^^smitty should have just c/p'd the article's subtitle^^

There is a difference between wanting to be lied to, and not wanting to hear a long, complicated spiel about how things really are. This is why Fox News gets higher ratings than CNN.

Don't like it? Invent a pill to give people longer attention spans.

While the headline kind of tripped over itself, it's nonetheless true. In a general, overarching sense.

Its not that the media is necessarily lying to the public, its that they will show you whatever it takes to get you to watch their show, read their magazine/newspaper, listen to their station. The more people tune in, the more money they make.

Media that makes a profit is not news, its infotainment and should be watched only with that under consideration.

the author's six or however many paragraphs about Ahmadinejad's mistranslated statement is pretty hair-splitty.

yeah it was not what he said, but you can't tell me that him saying "The regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the pages of history" was really that far in actual meaning from the mistranslated version ("Israel must be wiped off the map").

i'd go further and say his actual quote is in fact more hateful than the misquote.

Say, I heard that in a mail drum somewhere on teevee this weekend...

DarthBrooks [TotalFark] 2007-03-25 11:30:42 PM
I recognized this pattern last year, when The New York Times addressed the fact that, despite having been quoted as saying "Israel must be wiped off the map" by every man, woman and child in the United States over the past year, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a frequent victim of deliberate mistranslation, never actually said that. A correct translation, according to many native Farsi speakers, goes something like, "The regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the pages of history," and was a direct quotation of Ayatollah Khomeini.

So there's a super big idiomatic difference between "wiped off the map" and "wiped off the pages of history?" Good luck on the pedantic bullshiat, Mahmoud.

FTA: ... paying to hear those lies.

Ethics, you son of a biatch. Because someone asks to be lied to, pays to be lied to, you should lie to him? What about if he asks to be mutilated? Killed? Or are you just too damn greedy to give the truth, even if it hurts your bottom line?

Where is your morality now?

There used to be a law that TV stations had to show they were helping their community. They did this by offering unbiased news and educational content.

Then the major networks paid a lot of money to get that law removed.
