Whatever you say, diddler...

Though I'll take the Who over Led Zep, anyday.

I think that's enough for now.

The Hendrix graphic was done by Ron Wood, which is cute.

Funny how he includes himself in that. I might not be a fan of Hendrix's music, but there's no denying that he had a significant contribution to the art.

What, no Bob Dylan?

Led Zeppelin: Defunct.
The Kinks: Defunct.
The Beatles: Defunct.
Frank Zappa: Dead.
Jimi Hendrix: Dead.
Grateful Dead: Defunct with the death of Jerry Garcia.
The Doors: Defunct shortly after the death of Jim Morrison.
Cream: Defunct.
Pink Floyd: Effectively defunct.
Traffic: Defunct.
Queen: Might as well be defunct.
Blind Faith: Defunct.
Yardbirds: Defunct.

Are most of you aware that you are helping to prove Townshend's point?

FTW!

I also agree with the "reported quote" from a "blog post...from an independent writer and is not connected with Reuters News" saying the Police are a punk group, not "classic rock". No big whoop.

DRTFA but came in here to say essentially the same as elchip.

What's the cutoff year for a 'classic rock' band? 1969?

I must respectfully beg to differ with that author.

nitroglycerine 2007-03-24 10:40:16 PM
I'll agree with him sort of, in that the Police are closer to "punk" than "classic rock". Maybe not punk per se, but they fit into the whole punk/new wave/collage rock thing that got watered down and sold to the masses as alternative music in the 90s. Any band that has lyrics like these:

None of his friends know right from wrong
They kick a boy to death cos he dont belong
Youve got to humanise yourself

A policeman put on his uniform
Hed like to have a gun just to keep him warm
Because violence here is a social norm
Youve got to humanise yourself

Re-humanise yourself
Re-humanise yourself
Re-humanise yourself
Re-humanise yourself

I work all day at the factory
Im building a machine thats not for me
There must be a reason that I cant see
Youve got to humanise yourself

Billys joined the national front
He always was a little runt
Hes got his hand in the air with the other koonts
Youve got to humanise yourself

Re-humanise yourself
Re-humanise yourself
Re-humanise yourself
Re-humanise yourself

I work all day at the factory
Im building a machine thats not for me
There must be a reason that I cant see
Youve got to humanise yourself

A policeman put on his uniform
Hed like to have a gun just to keep him warm
Because violence here is a social norm
Youve got to humanise yourself

Re-humanise yourself..."

Has to have at least a punk heart. You know, cause he says coonts 'n' stuff.

/The Kinks were a million times better than The Who

501nBoots 2007-03-24 10:40:36 PM
Somehow I don't think he just meant bands that are still around.

yeah - I think he did.

the question was in reference to the Police reunion tour and the "classic" rock acts all reforming and cashing in with new releases or tours...

much like the re-formed Who are doing.

Roger Waters is also touring "performing the music of Pink Floyd"... another grab for the money.

Not that I'd call Floyd "classic" rock, mind you - unless "classic" has generically become the new word for "old".

In that case... it applies.

I saw the "classic" Black Sabbath lineup, along with the "classic" Judas Priest at Ozzfest 2 summers ago...

not that it wasn't cool to see some of my rock favorites on stage all together again, mind you...

but Ozzy was practically incoherent half of the time... and no one should have to watch Bill Ward wheeze and twitch and sweat on a huge projection screen.

That being said... The Priest rocked.

Fark Townsend.

Given the choice, I'd rather spend on an AC/DC concert and use the money I saved for recreationals...

the New Who can suck Sting's tantric peener for all I care.

Are most of you aware that you are helping to prove Townshend's point?

The Who: effectively defunct when Moon died (even if my fav Who song is Eminence Front)
The Stones: depending on who you ask, defunct when Brian Jones died

Stop drinking the Koolaid, anyway - like Mugato said, he wasn't just referring to the bands that are still around.

The_Philosopher_King 2007-03-24 11:33:02 PM
I thought he was talking about bands that are still around.

If so he missed:

Genesis
Aerosmith
Alice Cooper
Steely Dan
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

All Classic Rock Bands

Then there is:
Eric Clapton solo since mid 70s
Bob Dylan
Pat Benetar
James Taylor

coffee fiend 2007-03-24 11:49:54 PM
Cameron_Talley: unless you included CSNY. 'Cause all four of them are still alive and kicking...

I beg to differ. David Crosby's been dead for years; he just doesn't know it yet.

The_Philosopher_King: Steely Dan

Is it over for them? They're going back out on tour ... I'm thinking about seeing them here in June. Have to see if it's any good I guess, but at least it's Becker and Fagen.

/Punker than the Police, more Classic than the Who

501nBoots 2007-03-25 01:23:09 AM
The_Philosopher_King: no... I don't think that's what Pete meant...

seems to me that what he was saying is that "classic" rock was the whole British R&B-influenced, blues-bred, 60's-style, Mod n' sods, drive the car into the swimming pool and toss the furniture out the hotel window while high on smack, speed, hallucinogens and alcohol-type band.

He's got a point there, I'll grant him. But not by much.

Genesis = Prog Rock - besides, No Gabriel = No Squonk
Aerosmith = 70's American Rock
Alice Cooper = Stage show rock
Steely Dan = not rock - jazzy blues, but not rock.
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band = No. Not even.
Clapton = blues. not rock. and not a band.
Bob Dylan = not close to rock. but he has a radio show.
Pat Benetar = hot and rockish... but too 70's/80's. Plus Neil Geraldo is a dick.
James Taylor = you have to be sacking me, right?

I mean... yes... they probably play all those bands (and more) during the "classic rock station's 500 classic rock tunes during our Indy 500 Weekend of Rock and Roll countdown - weekend - of - rock - strongbad - The Cheat?"...

(sponsored by a Lite Beer, the classic beer of classic rock and roll - and some prostate supplement - or some laser eye clinic or something...)

The Stones didn't die when Brian Johnson drowned.... but when they started charging $100 or more for concert tickets.

Led Zeppelin died when Bonham did.

The Who survived Moon's death... but Daltrey and Townsend have this fark-you and no, fark-you, too relationship going on... and when Entwhistle finally croaked, that was the end of the band, far as I'm concerned.

Now, it's a rush to "see us before we die" concerts... at prices that make a car payment seem cheap...

sorry Pete... I've got 20-plus years of recordings...

I'll pass...

I saw you and Zep and the Stones back when you were young and cool and tickets were $10 for a floor seat...

If I was gonna give $100 to someone over 60, I'd head to the local Vets home and take some of the boys out for a few beers.

No offense intended, Pete.

But, Rock is Dead.

The Stones didn't die when Brian Johnson drowned....

mostly because he wasn't in the band.
