I'm sure there's a joke here about old guys being able to play with their Wii's again, but I can't think of it.

They'll have to pry Cocoon out of the Beta player.

"While those rivals focused on cutting-edge graphics and high-tech bells and whistles, Nintendo focused on making game play easier, more intuitive and more appealing to a mass market."

Hey, I remember that same strategy!!

Sure did. Ever hear of games like Archon from a little development house that probably went out of business now. What was their name again? Had a cube, sphere and cone for their logo. They can't possibly be making games any more.

Hold the Wiimote in your hand, and wave it in the air until all the kids are off your lawn.

CokeBear 2007-03-24 01:00:19 AM
Dammit, thats why I can't find one anywhere in Toronto! All the old people with nothing better to do are buying them up! You need to wait in line at Future Shop or Best Buy to get one, and of course only the unemployed or retired can stand in line during business hours to get one. This is the first system that I actually want since the original NES, and I can't farking get one!

Hacker_X 2007-03-24 01:12:02 AM
I think at this point it may be safe to officially declare the Wii a cultural phenomenon. We now have stories of people from under 2 years old to over 80 years old playing the things. Other than the TV when was the last time something hit the market and had this broad of appeal? Nintendo keeps selling the things as fast as they can build them and have been since they day the thing came out.

KeeperX 2007-03-24 01:12:42 AM
WoW is pretty popular among retirees, as well. My dad, before jumping ship to my guild full of twenty-something raiders, was in a guild almost entirely made of folks who would disappear with their husbands/wives for two to three weeks for Caribbean cruises and the like.

rpm: Ever hear of games like Archon from a little development house that probably went out of business now. What was their name again? Had a cube, sphere and cone for their logo. They can't possibly be making games any more.

Free Fall Associates made the game. Distributed by EA.

Myriad Interactive bought the rights and plans on selling a new version this year.

What are the odds that anyone reading this article would need help figuring out that they were referring to Mario?

If it can happen to rock and roll, it can happen to video games - a time will come when only old people are interested.

I wouldn't let a few older folks playing a video game turn me off onto buying one. They are pretty popular and hard as hell to find. I can literally walk into wal mart target or best buy and trip over the xbox 360 and ps3 laying around. Can't even find a wii remote in any of the stores.

/wait a few weeks until the stories come out of old folks breaking various body parts playing the games.

I do beleive that rpm is talking about 3DO.

Unless EA bought them... which they probably have.

You people joke about sending manhunt or somesuch to your grandparents to play...

Think for a second. A lot of our grandparents fought in actual wars.. they might be decent at shooters...

And I fear playing my grandmother in momma cooks...

I fear my grandma in Mortal Kombat revskippy. Never have I played someone so, so cheap as her with sub zero. Her favorite is the first Zelda though.

Hold the Wiimote in your hand, and wave it in the air until all the kids are off your lawn.

I'm pretty sure that's already one of the games in Wario Ware.

Passive Aggressive Larry [TotalFark] 2007-03-24 02:18:39 AM
man, a lot of people enjoy playing that wii sports bowling, and its just a generic game that comes free with the console. Now if Nintendo does this sort of shiat and also caters to the hardcore crowd, then the Wii will be one pleasing console across the board.

/lovin' the wii

Purelilac [TotalFark] 2007-03-24 02:19:21 AM
My grandmother is 93 next month. She still lives in the house she has owned for almost 50 years. She climbs the trees in her back yard to prune them, and gets on her roof to clean off the "chef hats" on the roof. In Los Angeles. She would ace Wii if she had the damn time. She has better shiat to do. God bless her.

I am the only that had Vic-20?

THE HouseCat 2007-03-24 02:35:25 AM
mrGQ

I missed out on the VIC20, at that time I was busy building a Sinclair ZX-81 (only $200 for the kit and it had a blistering 1K memory).

My first year in college the school had just gotten rid of a bunch of old Burroughs key punch machines and replaced them with a room full of Commodore PETs (woohoo, 8K)
We had one cassette machine to service all 12 PETs

/computers have improved a bit since then

You're so right. I used to target shoot with my grandfather, a World War II vet and at 70 he was still far better than anyone there. I'd bet he would have enjoyed a Wii.

That seriously brings a tear to my eye. My parents introduced me to video games (early 80s Atari 2600, my dad had high scores kept above his work bench. Never could beat him at Steeplechase).

Definitely going home next week to convince my 63-year-old father to stop trying to beat Doom 3 on the Xbox1 and pick up a Wii.
