This has many implications on my job. Time to climb the corporate ladder.

Are you getting a kick out of some of these replies?

New markets? Halliburton has been doing business with Iran for years, despite the ban.

NBC, March 2005, Video: U.S. companies in Iran -direct to video. (Note, based on style of clothing, stock footage of chanting crowds from the 80s. A media favorite)

That's pretty classic.

Do you have some sort of bot that notifies you of any greenlight containing the search term "Iran"?

Perhaps Dubai doesn't have an extradition treaty with the US. Sooner or later some of these crooks will be charged with something.

Interesting--According to the video, they were under investigation for violating US bans on doing business with Iran in 2005. I don't remember any USA from Texas being fired....

Wonder what happened to that investigation.

BizarreRecords 2007-03-11 02:34:44 PM
Ha ha, it'll be funny how all the people in Houston who make a career out of sucking Halliburton's dick will accept this news.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2007-03-11 02:35:52 PM
Probably makes it harder for US prosecutors to get a hold of key records if they move the HQ outside of the US. Or it could be that haliburton has decided it's time to launch their world takeover tour and they don't want to do it where a bunch of US troops could easily shut them down.

Alternatively, I should stop watching Jericho. I could easily see haliburton funding the Ravenwood group.

Mordis 2007-03-11 02:39:48 PM
Skleenar: Are you getting a kick out of some of these replies?

I am in fact!

This may be a powerplay by Halliburton to keep from getting their operations in Dubai shut down. Many LOGCAP employees have been arrested in Dubai for various offenses, drunk & disorderly, cultural insensitivity, drugs and the like. Dubai needed a little extra grease to keep the wheels turning.

General Electric, the parent company of NBC, decided to not take any more orders from Iran AFTER Halliburton pulled out.

I, for one, welcome the relocation of our corporate overlords - to the other side of this shrinking planet.

The thing you Libs need to understand is that Halliburton is the only company capable of moving its headquarters to Dubai.

The AP has it to. It's time to screw down your tinfoil hat.

Lenny_da_Hog 2007-03-11 03:09:55 PM
Well, duh.

What's the point in starting a war to get all those tax dollars if you're only going to pay the dollars back in taxes?

Horatio_Algernon 2007-03-11 03:10:42 PM
Well, if as a corporation, you want to avoid US taxes, on your skezillion$ made offa war profiteering, it makes perfect sense.

Will be interested to see if there are Federal tax breaks associated with this move.

This is good news for Hugo Chavez. He can finally move his company to the US.

Seeing as there are lucrative tax breaks for sending labor overseas, moving an entire company off-shore will be a huge windfall.

Horatio_Algernon: Well, if as a corporation, you want to avoid US taxes,

Not the only reason. Moving the company out of the US gives more leverage when dealing with other countries. Since you are no longer an US company you can do business with countries that dislike the US or with countries that won't do business with the US.

This could be a move to create stability since most of their work is in the US. If the US market falls then many people are out of work. But if they make a move to a more global work force then instead of doing mass lay-off's, they can shift the workforce to where the work is.

At least that's what my company does. They are Caribbean based with only 20% of their work in the US. It creates a great deal of job security.

netweavr [TotalFark] 2007-03-11 03:19:51 PM
Bah, not going to happen. The US will stamp a "proprietary" label on the company and ban it from moving.

Not that thats a real issue, there are ways around that. See 3rd post in this thread.

"As the decades-long hostilities between the United States and the former Soviet Union in the Middle East have come to an end with the end of the Cold War, this important region of the world has reemerged as the arena for rivalries between the major capitalist powers of the world over sources of oil that is vital for their economies. Locked in interimperialist competition for control of raw materials, cheap labor, new markets, and higher rates of profit across the globe, the chief imperialist powers found in Iraq and Iran (and potentially Syria) the potential for an alternate power center to control and regulate the flow of oil, which has become the key strategic commodity that will determine the success or failure of one or another of the rival capitalist powers in the world economy well into the twenty first century."
