Yep, all those 'don't do drugs' messages are really reaching the kiddies.

sure glad my tax dollars went to drug education TV ads.

Nope, NOT Reed College!! What a shocker!!!

Weaver95: Yep, all those 'don't do drugs' messages are really reaching the kiddies.

I think the Netherlands has the right idea on marijuana/hash - remove the forbidden fruit aspect of it by de facto legalizing it, and let everyone see that those who are chronic users tend to be losers.

hitchking 2007-03-11 02:11:36 PM
The absurd thing is that no one cares that these same kids are likely drinking themselves half to death every other night.

Pot should be legal, if only so that people substitute it for alcohol- which is far more harmful.

Charming_Man 2007-03-11 02:12:29 PM
They should have grown 'shrooms instead.

I don't know what the 'right idea' is for illegal drugs. I only know that we're spending over a billion a year on the drug war and illegal drugs are actually cheaper and easier to get than ever before.

hitchking 2007-03-11 02:25:05 PM
Weaver95: I only know that we're spending over a billion a year

Oh, if only. I checked Wikipedia and the US Federal Government calculates the cost of 2005's drug war at 12 billion. If you include the cost of arresting and incarcerating drug offenders, it's over 50 billion a year in total.

Irish15 2007-03-11 02:36:58 PM
Surprised? That should be as surprising as when a freshmen girl discovers college guys enjoy having sex with her on her first night at school.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2007-03-11 02:41:57 PM
If you include the cost of arresting and incarcerating drug offenders, it's over 50 billion a year in total.

My point being that we're spending billions and billions a year to stop illegal drugs. And despite all that money, hardware and manpower, kids can still easily grow pot in a college dorm.

I don't know if legalization is the way to go. All I know is that what we're doing right now isn't the answer.

Oh, I agree, I'm not trying to argue with you. Whatever people think of drug use, the War on Drugs is a huge waste of money.

/me agrees with netweavr!

If i can buy my 8th at the same price from a government source, and I know its good quality, I'll do it! And since the government already has millions of plants confiscated, etc, they can essentially make a pure profit, and once they start growing it, they can do so in such large numbers that their cost is minimal, and all the profit is taxes in their pocket!

Keep it illegal. I don't want insurance companies to force commercial manufacturers(of weed... if it were legalized) to degrade the quality of the product in order to avoid lawsiuts. I like my weed to actually get me high.

spyyder 2007-03-11 03:39:25 PM
Why is pot illegal in the first place?? Serious question. I mean there are so many other harmful products out there that are perfectly legal to use, why pot?? Why regulate drugs, why not let Darwin take care of the drug problem??

A short lesson in ambigious terminology here:

"There were 10 plants, six of them in water bottles and four in cups containing soil, the officers allege."

If these water bottles are the ten-gallon, watercooler variety then these students are so farked. If they are the one liter variety, then the plants are only a foot tall at most.

Tiberian.Winter 2007-03-11 03:54:29 PM
The administration at my college has a new policy of "avoid calling the police." (Private school BTW.) Resident Hall staff are more likely to just confiscate the drugs than call the police. I know for a fact that the Dean of Student Affairs took weed off some kids who'd been smoking outside of a residents hall and never bothered to report them to the police.

Lumoclear 2007-03-11 03:54:30 PM
Gee... and to think, to get our cash to party we wouldn't grow pot. Me and my compadre would sell it.

Let someone else grow it over the summer months (students staying for them extra courses) in their backyards amongst the tomato and rose bushes. When it came time towards the start of the school year, late at night, you go harvesting.

Then profit from 2 weeks of sales.

If you ever seen two guys running really fast down a street with long green plants, that wasn't us.

/ we weren't the first ones to do this
// saw the above from my compadre's pick-up truck

Yeah popping grow ops is easy, you just need to check the trash verify the stage of the grow op and b and e when they arent around. gotta watch out for traps, buddy almost lost his foot to a homemade "security device". really it was a mouse trap with a hole drilled into the area where the arm strikes with a 22 gauge shotgun shell. See what happened is the line was too slack so when he went down the stairs he triggered it but was already down two other straps so it just caused him to jump and tumble down the stairs. he shiat his pants, it was hilarious but also shiatty because we didnt have time to fully explore the situation.

Damn_Conservative_Media 2007-03-11 04:16:52 PM
That's right. Waste more money. farking ridiculous drug laws.

It's just fantastic that they're catching these hardened criminals (college students)... after all, if these kids weren't being thrown in prison, they might actually go out into society and get jobs and be productive members of society. Oh the horror.

mtylerjr 2007-03-11 04:26:01 PM
Pot is illegal because of some of the reasons listed above, but also because repeated smoking of it apparently turns people into creepy walking stuttering spokesmen for it.

"Duuude, legalizing pot will, like, benefit the economy, and, like, it can be used for sooo much stuuf, like, you totally dont realize... and, like.. beer is totally waaay worse, and.. like... its a big government conspiracy... and bob marley is, like... so talented, here, have some literature....man made beer, and god made pot, maaaan, so it must be good, right? Can I borrow some money?"

Lots of those types in Santa Cruz. Thats one reason I would never smoke it,

Helios1182 2007-03-11 04:32:22 PM
If people want pot legalized they need to hire someone else to run their campaign. When the image of your campaign is a stoned long haired hippie talking about the man keeping them down, no one is going to take them seriously. Hire some good lawyers and a PR group and run ads that show how safe it is, the taxable income, etc.

You think those people wouldn't be like that anyway? The current laws are an atrocious waste of our time and money. And don't worry, I'm sure if we changed our ridiculous laws, consuming cannabis wouldn't suddenly become mandatory. So you'd be free to continue as you are and continue looking down upon others.

I know a large number of pot smokers and not a single one sounds like that (even the screw-ups). Maybe all the real burnouts move west.

CygnusDarius [TotalFark] 2007-03-11 04:52:25 PM
The problem with legalizing pot is that when it does, the wave of kids who "wanna be cool" will be enormous.

After that, it'll be all gravy.

Baron-Harkonnen 2007-03-11 04:58:34 PM
I think most people don't realize how diverse the demographic of people that smoke weed is.

All kinds of people do it...why it is not legal is because the small minority of people who benefit from it being illegal and the people who have fallen for the scare tactics and misinformation are the ones influencing our lawmakers.

Now that I think of it, there's little difference with the pot thing than when alcohol was, years ago...

Interesting.

why it is not legal is because the small minority of people who benefit from it being illegal and the people who have fallen for the scare tactics and misinformation are the ones influencing our lawmakers.

I've never used the stuff myself, and even if it were legal I doubt I'd try it.

Be that as it may, even a die hard drug warrior MUST realize that our current approach isn't working. Billions and billions of dollars spent, hundreds of thousands of man hours, God knows how much hardware - and we can't stop a bunch of college goof balls from growing pot in their dorm.

That's what gets me. It's not the arguments for/against leaglization. It's the indisputable fact that NOTHING we've done to date has worked. I've got friends who consider themselves fiscal conservatives, and when I bring this point to their attention they get a weird rabid gleam in their eyes and start ranting about how legalization will destroy society. Never mind the fact that we already HAVE drugs flooding society and legalization wouldn't add any more to the problem than we're currently experiencing...but whatever. the problem is that they refuse to acknowledge that the DEA is a failure. And these are people who hate government spending. I'd have figured they'd be ok with getting rid of a government agency with such a lousy track record.

I can't figure it.

engal5166 2007-03-11 05:17:25 PM

Thing is, they already grow it. There's a pot farm that is government run just outside Atlanta. Supposedly, it's the Chronic!!!
