You can go for the other guy's throat, no rules. I'd say that odds are that someday they are going to pair up a sadistic jerk with a weenie who gets his larynx crushed. Then all these people are going to get sued out of everything they have. Its all fun and games until somebody gets their larynx crushed.

FTA: Before he began competing in mixed martial arts tournaments, Mullero said he went to his minister to ask him if what he was doing was wrong. Said Mullero: "He made it clear if your heart is not in it to kill the other guy, then it was OK."

We sure don't have the ministers we used to... I know both guys are perfectly aware of the risks involved in Fight Club©, but I still think that wanting to beat the crap out of someone (even without murderous intents) is flirting a little with the Dark Side, if you see what I mean. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just have a hard time imagining a minister approving of it...

People have been doing this as long as they have seen competitive fighting as entertainment. People did amature boxing back in the depression after hearing about the Cinderella Man. Kids saw Bruce Lee films and started to pretend they were in a Kung Fu movie, and grew up trying martial arts. WWF, as lousy as it is, gave birth to the stillborn travesty that is "Backyard Wrestling."

The UFC, K1, and Pride Fighting leagues have been around for quite a while, but thanks to the recent upsurge in popularity of the UFC, not only is K1 and Pride riding a new wave of notoriety, but some of the lower end amature fighting leagues are too. I am seeing "King of the Ring" and "Iron Man" and "Tough Man" competitions springing up all over the place.

It's only inevitable that it's going to trickle down to the lowest common denominator: Untrained, crazy, sometimes inbred idiots beating the hell out of each other in an abandoned warehouse. They may use a guise of modeling themselves after some anarchist, masculine ideals presented in the Fight Club movie (I am willing to bet most of these numbskulls have never read the book,) but either way they are imitating what they wish they could do in real life, without all the pesky work of training or having natural talent to begin with. I see a few of them have some training in martial arts, but I am wondering how many of those are gained through a six week course, a weekend seminar, or "Blackbelt by Mail" via DVD or VHS tape.

If you ever saw the karate instructor in Napoleon Dynamite, he's right on the money. Many people around the country like him, who get a mail order black belt, open a school, and convince the naive that they are grand masters.

This is nothing new except for the format.

As a huge MMA fan, this is not cool. Anything that makes MMA look "underground" or "unregulated" or "barbaric" is bad for the sport. The UFC has done a great job bringing mixed martial arts to the mainstream and educating the public about how much skill and technique the sport requires. It's also done a great job of emphasizing safety, something these jerkoffs need to work on.

Move it to Jersey, adopt the Unified Rules (which protect fighters as well as make for better fights), leave the backalley. Stop being idiots and practice a sport, not a cockfighting spectacle.

I don't like the fact that the UFC stands up their fighters now, as I am into the ground game and the chess match that is grappling. I absolutely LOVED the fact that McCarthy refused to stand Silvia and Coltour up, as you can tell that's exactly what he wanted and was laying there waiting for. Even then, the putz waited out the round rather than take the risk of getting submitted.

However, I can see the purpose of it, as a pure ground fight is boring to those people not trained in martial arts, because to them it looks like they are doing nothing. To reach a mass market, you need to create a sense of urgency so that the fighters don't have time to slowly work an opponent into a bad position.

Full contact chess, in other words.

Shadowknight [recently expired TotalFark] 2007-03-11 01:41:16 PM
PS, the "putz" I was referring to was Silvia, not McCarthy. He's a good ref and I wish he was the defacto ref for all UFC main events. The less we see of Herb Dean, the better.

Not to mention, McCarthy is the only ref I've seen that looks like he could actually go toe to toe with some of the fighters.

I also like watching a buncha dumbasses that think they know how to fight beat the crap out of each other sometimes, but call it what it is.

I wouldn't call it an underground version of the UFC because it's not, it's nothing like the UFC.
The UFC is comparable to these underground fights in the same way that two guys off the street punching the crap out of each other is comparable to professional boxing.

Have you seen professional boxing lately? That's almost a fair comparison, except for the fact that on the street, the winner can take all the money (out of the unconscious opponents wallet.) In boxing, neither fighter gets the money, and the promoters take the purse.

:P

I'm not trained in martial arts and it doesn't look like they're doing nothing.
However you have to watch A LOT of UFC or have someone explain it to you before you start to see anything going on, and I don't think most people have that kind of attention span.

The less we see of Herb Dean, the better.

Complete agreement. Too many fights end with both fighters pissed when he's the ref. Let the guys fight, don't stop them because one guy doesn't appear to be fighting back for a fraction of a second.

I haven't watched boxing since I was a little kid and my dad and his friends used to all put in money to get fights on pay per view.
There have been times when I caught parts of fights at friend's houses though and it does seem pretty terrible. I don't even think I could name one new boxer.

When I was a teenager, my friends and I all used to do this... beating the crap out of each other, one-on-one, without a huge crowd (other than just our group of friends). It's surprisingly fun, despite the injuries sustained (a dislocated shoulder is not pleasant-feeling).

I didn't even know he came out of retirement to fight Sylvia, that shows you how behind I am.
Now I'm going to have to make damn sure to see that.

I remember when Couture retired I was thinking. "Retire? HA!, we'll see"

Go to youtube and watch the street fights with Kimbo. At first he looks like hotshiat but then when he actually fights a guy (bear) who knows some holds and actual strategy you find out hes really not.

see the problem here is everyone is assuming that just because they are underground that they are a bunch of idiots that dont know how to fight.
from that perspective then yes that might seem dumb, but what alot of people forget is that the UFC is not really an ultimate fighting championship; it should be UGFC(g=ground)and its rules largely make it impossible to use alot of higher martial arts. for example most chinese 5 animal styles(kung fu) and to a lesser extent ninjutsu and taichi. anyone that pratices these arts has a difficult time actually putting them into pratice. even their own tourniments in the US are overregulated.
something like this gives pretty much everyone a fair chance to actually do what they pratice under fairly safe conditions. they have a ref to tackle some one if stuff starts to get out of hand, and a medic on the side to provide a traciotome(spelling? hey u try to spell it lol)if nessicary.

ThomasHayden 2007-03-11 04:15:20 PM
man i just watched some of those kimbo videos that guy is sick hes got is own style but he's a damn good sport too, that bear guy gave him hell but he to a beating for 10 min thats crazy id like to meet him he seems like a cool guy. he has honor when he fights too, he's not jumping all over a guy laying on the ground, good to see this stuff.

Clearly this is an effort by the underground combat league to deny the three greatest fighters of all time a chance to enter their ring! Larry, Moe, and Curly will not be denied biatches!
