Probably just mistook his garage for a Farmers' Market.

Why do I find this headline to be so amusing?

The elderly should not be allowed to drive.

My mom complained to me that someone hit her Jetta and left white paint on the wing on the back (mint condition Trek Edition, 42k miles). I noticed a dent in her garage door that matches the mark on her car, apparently from not waiting for the door to go up. Yeah, she's a Jersey driver.

Accidentally. Right.

He'd been eying that suacy 75-year-old down the street...

Of course, FTFA, she isn't dead.

Wish I could have gotten away with this.

Of course I would have ended up with the stepkids.

These kinds of stories makes me glad that manual cars are the standard around here. It makes it almost impossible to mistake the brake for the accelerator and go forward, when you're standing still.

If you do mistake the accelerator for the brake nothing really bad happens since the car isn't in gear or you've got the clutch pressed in. The only thing that'll happen is your engine revs up like mad, but that's all.

So, from this we learn that age discriminiation is A-OK.

Nobody would EVER print a headline like, "Female Driver Accidentally Hits Gas Hitting Husband," or "Hispanic Driver Accidentally Hits Gas Hitting Wife." But elderly? That's as good as drunk -- and we're all somehow OK with it.

Hell, why don't we just euthanize people on their 80th birthdays, so we don't have to worry about all the trouble they'll cause as they (gasp!) try to continue taking care of themselves and live the rest of their lives?

/not "elderly"
//doesn't believe in taking any more independence away from someone than what mother nature is already doing.

shadowself 2007-03-11 03:41:00 PM
Driving test or no driving test, a 91-year-old has as much business behind the wheel of a car as a 4-year-old does.

shadowself 2007-03-11 03:45:04 PM
spmkk, you would change your tune if someone you love is run down by a 90+ year old driver. The Mother Nature to whom you refer has affected the elderly's ability to drive, much as Mother Vodka affects the drunk's ability. Intentional or course-of-nature, dangerous drivers should be removed from the roads, sidewalks, and farmers' markets. Do you scream age discrimination because children cannot get a license until they reach their teens? Sure, it would be nice to say that the elderly are excellent drivers until the day they die - but be realistic here. They're not.

MongoTheGeek 2007-03-11 03:45:19 PM
I bet they were just staying together for the kids...

The elderly should not be driving machinery that there is some doubt of their ability to control.

If that is discrimination, then so be it.

fontcase, some headlines could greatly use a comma to disambiguate. He accidentally hit gas while trying to hit his wife? He accidentally hit gas that was hitting his wife?

Nakito 2007-03-11 04:03:08 PM
On the "age discrimination" thing --

The issue is whether you use a "bright line" rule (like "no driving after 75") or whether you use individual judgement to assess all drivers regardless of age. The second approach is much fairer, since I am profoundly certain that there are some 80-year-old drivers out there who are far better than many 20-year-old drivers.

But the problem, of course, is implementation and efficiency. Administrators like bright line rules because it eliminates the need to take the time and effort to make individual assessments (hence school districts with zero-tolerance policies that result in a child being suspended for having a Leatherman tool on a camping trip).

A perfect example is the way insurance companies charge a risk premium for all male drivers under 25. They don't make exceptions. If you are in that demographic, you are deemed high risk, and that's that.

It's not going to be an issue issue to resolve, especially as the general population ages.

Age discrimination against old people is WRONG because they vote.

Young people, however, shall not drive after 10PM, shall not drive with friends in the car, shall face stiffer penalties for driving while on a cell phone, and shall lose their license if they get more than one ticket.

What's the story behind that?

And was anyone else perplexed at the wording of that article's headline?

"Elderly Driver Accidentally Hits Gas Hitting Wife."

They make it sound like the wife was getting high off of gas.

Happened to me, garbage can now has a huge dent in it and I am not an elderly driver...lol shiat happens but just because somebody makes a mistake like that doesn't mean they are a bad driver. Without public transportation those people are stranded and while I might curse driving behind a slow (elderly) driver, I understand they need the car for transportation. Just as long as they drive safely I have no issue with that...
