Try living on the IN/MI border. For years, we were (and still are) always Central, Michigan is 5 mins. away and always Eastern, then 5 mins. East of here, they didn't do daylight savings at all. Made getting things done real fun.

Bonehead 2007-03-11 11:30:06 AM
Damn...and I thought getting up this morning and seeing that link to set my clocks ahead 1 hour was a shocker. If it was 2 hours, I'd already be late for stuff.

In the 1970s the whole early DST bit lasted two weeks when kids were getting hit by cars waiting for school buses in the dark. Wonder how long it will take this time around?

Did cars in the 70's drive on sidewalks in the dark?

I'd call it an advantage to spend two fewer hours in Indiana.

Apparently, it was hard for drivers to avoid kids in the dark in March, but were able to miss them just fine in December and January.

The only "darkness" associated with daylight-saving time is politicians with their heads so far up their arse they can't see anything.

Simple solution: Kids going to school in the dark? Require school districts to start school an hour later.

Politicians' solution: Kids in the dark? Require 300 million American lemmings to set their clocks back and forth twice a year.

Save daylight? HAHHHAHAHAHAHHHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!11!1!!!1

Time doesn't follow time zones, daylight saving, or anything else. It's just... TIME. It marches on no matter what. I just wish the butt-heads in Congress would leave it alone, or more states would grow a pair like Arizona and tell them to fark off.

The more daylight there is when Americans are at work, the less electricity is needlessly wasted.

This is so blindingly obvious to me, I fail to see what your problem is.

And this is one of the reasons that Mitch Daniels will only be a one term governor. That and the fact that the douche bag (what does the filter do with that?) leased the toll road without any debate or real study.

That being said, we need to get some of the old time Dems out of office in this state as well, but come on, make a $3.5 billion dollar decision during the short session of the legislature so there is no time to study or debate. Give me a break.

I live in Southeastern Indiana and work in Ohio and Kentucky.I used to run on fast time for work and slow time for home(banking and whatnot). This was a blessing because I didn't have to run over all those non-driving Buckeyes to get home and tend to normal business before my small town closed down for the evening.
Then our lovely governor Biatch Daniels had a "great" idea...Let's screw up everyone's schedules and change the clocks twice a year.I wish he would've left well enough alone!!!
//Not happy with time change

Regardless of how many people "see it as a good idea" the fact is that it will save a shiatload of electricity. These "same people" would rather the gov't spend millions extra because theyre too stupid to figure out how to use a dollar coin.

This country needs a scientist and an economist to get elected to the presidency and vice presidency. Couple them with a smoking hot duo (m/f) press secretaries to explain the shiat to the american public every night in a 5 minute segment on the evening news.

And then just fix stuff based on the best science and the best economic information that can be gathered.

DST is not Progressive, nor is it new. Infact DST was Created for FARMERS, not for People that work Bankers Hours who want more time in the evenings. It was to allow FARMER more time in the fields and was in fact first proposed by Ben Franklin in 1784 AS A JOKE
DST Today is an outdated waste of time since we are a 24hr a day world. The Sun is up for the same amount of time, you dont "gain" anything. And while the government loves to claim DST is going to Save the World by reducing energy, it has been proven in some cases that DST can INCREASE energy consumption.

The fact of the matter is DST is a waste of time //pun intended//, and only people to stupid to think for themselves support DST.
Currently AZ maybe the only state with out DST, however 3 others are actively seeking to end their support for DST and Indiana, hopefully, will return to the Ranks of ANTI-DST states in the next couple of years

I know that personally, I'm going to use more energy with DST than without. By coming home an hour 'earlier', I end up using an extra hour of air conditioning in my house that I wouldn't have to otherwise (I turn it off when it cools off in the twilight). I've heard others mention the same situation. 100 home air conditioners use more energy than the 5 or 6 units it might take to cool the area we work in. And you must work in some oddball office building. The office buildings I deal with have the lights on during business hours regardless if it's light outside or not. They don't save energy by turning off the lights an hour earlier from DST.

You might not have realized it, but we don't live in the 18th century. We aren't trying to save candle wax by writing on our parchment by the light of the office window. DST has outlived any usefulness it might have had.

Benjamin Franklin's joke was taken seriously by the lemmings. What he was trying to say with a large degree of sarcasm was "If you want more daylight, get your lazy ass out of bed earlier!"

Without too much effort here's a link

http://www.energy.ca.gov/daylightsaving.html (no skillz)

After skimming through it, the nut appears to be that it saves about 1% of the US electrical consumption per day in effect. Considering the shiatload of energy we use its significant.

i lived in indiana for 22 years, and before last year we NEVER changed our clocks, and we liked it that way. the only thing to change was when TV shows came on, and if we were either on chicago time or new york time.

there was a shop in pulaski county before today that was an hour ahead of the store just upstairs. think about that...

StrikitRich:
In the 1970s the whole early DST bit lasted two weeks when kids were getting hit by cars waiting for school buses in the dark. Wonder how long it will take this time around?

"Our findings suggest that (1) DST has no significant detrimental effect on automobile crashes in the short run; (2) DST significantly reduces automobile crashes in the long with a 8-11% fall in crashes involving pedestrians, and a 6-10% fall in crashes for vehicular occupants in the weeks after the spring shift to DST."

destrip:
Simple solution: Kids going to school in the dark? Require school districts to start school an hour later.

Do you seriously think that the goal of daylight savings time is to get prevent kids from going to school in the dark?

Time doesn't follow time zones, daylight saving, or anything else. It's just... TIME. It marches on no matter what.

Stop taking things so literally.

The_Ancient:

Another person who thinks that the goal of DST is to literally save daylight.

And while the government loves to claim DST is going to Save the World by reducing energy, it has been proven in some cases that DST can INCREASE energy consumption.

Yes, in some cases it will increase the amount of energy used. That's why Arizona doesn't use DST. But the vast majority of people WILL use less energy. Proof (pdf).

The fact of the matter is DST is a waste of time //pun intended//, and only people to stupid to think for themselves support DST.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT 'FACTS' SAY, ANYONE WHO DOESN'T AGREE WITH ME IS STUPID OR A LEMMING OR SHEEPLE!1!1!!!

MattLugar:
I know that personally, I'm going to use more energy with DST than without. By coming home an hour 'earlier', I end up using an extra hour of air conditioning in my house that I wouldn't have to otherwise (I turn it off when it cools off in the twilight).

Overall, there's a 1% decrease in energy use.

You might not have realized it, but we don't live in the 18th century. We aren't trying to save candle wax by writing on our parchment by the light of the office window. DST has outlived any usefulness it might have had.

Yeah, except for the fact that it reduces car crashes, saves energy, and lowers utility bills by using less energy during peak early hours, DST is useless.

Fizpez This country needs a scientist and an economist to get elected to the presidency and vice presidency.

Oh dear sweet FSM, no. Economists are like meteorologists, except they are wrong most of the time. As for a scientist, the opposite of ignoring science-based public policy is not 100% science-based public policy, whatever that might be.

How about we just pay actual attention to the advisors, and appoint good ones? And have a good, responsible leader in the White House for a change, regardless of background?

photog_grrl 2007-03-11 04:47:35 PM
seriously, the entire indiana time zone thing is not that confusing. it's all based on your location.

www.emarkay.com

of course, we could just move the entire state to central time, but i won't go there...

Fuggin Bizzy 2007-03-11 04:52:48 PM
cphuntington97: Can't we all just use UTC?

I'm not sure that would simplify anything. "Let's see, it's 0700 here, and also 0700 in Tokyo. Are the Japanese at work at 0700, or is that the middle of their night?" Instead of paying attention to "What time is it in Tokyo?", you'd have to sweat "Which hours does Tokyo typically work/sleep/eat?" Ooookay...how about Moscow? Istanbul? And etc.

At least 1200 means high noon around the world, even if it happens at different times of the day.

/It might simplify communication with the Mars rovers

Where the hell was Biggles 2007-03-11 04:58:37 PM
Here's an idea: Why don't we change to DST - and leave it like that?

There are three main reasons I'd like to see permanent DST:
- No more clock changes. Why should we put the entire population through jet lag twice a year?
- The sun will go down "later" in the winter. Personally, I live on the leading edge of a timezone. I figure, statistically most other people do as well, because the zones are arranged so that the population centers would be on the leading edge. (It's this way at least in the eastern half of the US, with New York and Chicago.) That means that the sun goes down before 4:30 in the afternoon in the winter. That's really depressing to me.
- No one cares when the solar zenith is anymore, so no one cares if it's exactly at noon or an hour later.

I don't really buy that DST makes a difference one way or the other for energy consumption. I figure there are scenarios where both sides of that argument are true, so it's probably a wash in the long run. Therefore, it's really just a matter of when do we want to get up, and when do we want to get off work.
