I liked it when Tesla told Wolverine how to teleport himself with a modified tesla coil.

Oh wait... you mean that wasn't real? Movies lied to me? Nooooo!

But what happens when you put your wanger on the tesla coil?

Shadowknight [recently expired TotalFark] 2007-03-11 11:00:01 AM
Yeah, it works just fine, as long as you can keep running around and grabbing these before anyone else does.

My uncle and I built that coil, so I do have bigger pics.

High res version of the Furby

A few more pics here (pops, bigger pics in "bigpics" directory)

It's not tuned properly yet so it'll only throw 12" sparks. But still, there's nothing like the smell of fresh ozone in the garage. :)

And then Batman got framed for killing him. Good thing his butler was there to help him escape.

/spoilers?

Pyr0 2007-03-11 12:12:53 PM
Shadowknight: No problem :)

Bonehead: Yeah, it's too bad I didn't get an "After" picture of it with its eyes closed and most of its fur burnt off.

aphexcoil: IANAP either, but I *think* the high voltage needs to be DC to create X-rays. (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong about that.) Tesla coils generate AC voltages at radio frequencies.

We messed with various light bulbs with our coil. When a couple of drunk nerds from the south say "Hey y'all, watch this!" ... well, if I die of cancer, I'll get back to you.

soooo... there apparently aren't many, other than throwing sparks. although the music one is pretty awesome.

I wonder how you would actually use the high frequency, high voltage coming out of a tesla coil. I remember reading something where they were used for a very short time as a power supply for medical x-ray machines, until something better came along.

/Tesla FTW

gerbopel, that was THE first thing thing I thought of when I saw the link.I LOVE that movie!

Favorite scene:
Bill Murray: Doc, what could I do for this cough?
RZA: shiat, I was just thinking about that. Check this out: you get some hydrogen peroxide...
Bill Murray: We got that for cuts and stuff.
RZA: ...take fifty percent hydrogen peroxide, fifty percent water. You gargle with it. Do *not* swallow, you spit it out. Don't swallow, Bill Murray.
GZA: And if that doesn't work, try oven cleaner.
Bill Murray: We got that in the back, too.

My dad was a ham radio geek, so naturally we had a friggin' tower in our back yard. My brother and I taped a bunch of flourescent bulbs to it one night. Dad's thing was CW (morse code), and the tower flashed like crazy. He didn't find it too funny (he was wound a little tight), and neither did the neighbors.

How I wish I could have seen Tesla himself fire up his 187 foot high tower/coil at Wardenclyffe. He claimed to generate bolts 150 miles long. Damn them for tearing it down.

give me doughnuts [TotalFark] 2007-03-11 06:27:28 PM
The tower at Wardenclyffe didn't have one scrap of metal in it, and it took crews with dynamite three tries to bring it down.
Tesla is proof the that the line between genius and madness is very very thin.
I wonder if the Feds ever figured out his "death ray"?

phiz 2007-03-11 08:27:51 PM
animalmagnet: It's not even close to a Van De Graaf in operation. Van De Graaf generator works by generating static electricity and the spark pretty much follows one path out. A tesla coil works with high frequency electricity and throws a aura of sparks in every direction along with a cool looking glow.
