I really don't get the Sunshine worship. I found it to be pretty funny at first, in an offbeat kinda way, but ultimately I was just creeped-out - and not in a good way. I guess I went into it thinking it was going to be a charming little family flick, but still - the last 15 minutes was a train wreck.

MorningBreath [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 08:51:48 AM
definitely not a great, or even good movie in my opinion.

oxbowjourneyman [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 09:06:26 AM
It did have it's good qualities. Not really groundbreaking. A bit predictable. Nevertheless, a decent flick.

Almost exactly what Reactron said.

/loved the grandpa
//he should have had more/smarter lines

I really do not understand why this got the academy award nomination. Was it just that it hit the right political/social issues to make those pud pullers spooge all over themselves?

I've got a couple of VW buses for sale if anyone wants to recreate the movie. Email in profile

I thought the movie was very funny and the girl was terrific. Not only did she play the part well, but it might be the best-written child part I've seen in ages. She was an actual kid, not a mini-adult with a Harvard vocabulary in whose innocence we can find the truths in life.

I think the Indie Spirit award is perfect for it, but an Oscar would be a bit much.

mekki 2007-02-25 01:45:03 PM
It was a cute film but it seems to be one of a ton of indie films that fit the indie film formula; a bunch of misfits who don't get along, usually a family who all look like they should be on Prozac, band together when faced with a common problem and come out better than when they started.

Sure, Olive didn't win the prize, and yeah, those pageant girls were creepy, (brrrr), but her family which was on the verge of falling apart bonded and became stronger than ever.

Again, cute but completely forgettable. Like cotton candy after it hits the tongue.

/used to looooooovvve indie films but now they are all the same. Would rather watch "The Prestige" than "The Science of Sleep" again.

The last 15 minutes was a little strange, but follow me on this. The dad had spent the entire time coaching the little girl on being a winner and this pageant was going to be a vindication of that.

Until he saw that what he was telling her to win was the little miss Thailand contest, ala Jon Benet Ramsey, and how false and pretentious those people were (not to mention the fact that the announcer had a pedophile vibe). Her little striptease was actually the honest part of that whole thing.

Then it all becomes about venting the steam that had been building the whole movie and the family finally loosening up. The story is about the father, not the little girl.

I liked it, and the parts were more clever than the whole I think.

I will be rooting for it tonight.

/Name the last comedy to win Best Picture..

Mekki, you hit the nail on the head. And do you know why it has become that way? Two words. Sundance Festival. Once indie filmmakers got it in their heads that they could get discovered, and rich, and famous, they started churning out films engineered to ingratiate them with the kind of filmmakers who have power in Hollywood. In short, quirky pap.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 02:03:41 PM
I didn't see it but it looked like one of those, "OMG! Those people are so dysfunctional and quirky! I know people like that! LOLZZ!!". Pass.

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 02:09:12 PM
The Sting. And fark Little Miss Sunshine winning Best Picture. An OK comedy that shouldn't be nominated swiping the gold from The Departed? After the asshattery that was Magnolia for Retards winning Picture last year, if The Departed gets robbed by "oh, but it made our wrinkled 80-year-old asses FEEL good!" sentiment...fark!

paranand 2007-02-25 02:19:23 PM
seriously, the movie was alright, but NOT deserving of all the praise it's getting. Unless you are willing to heap that same praise on National Lampoon's Vacation, because that's all it was, a thinly-veiled, indie-tinged remake.

Copied for emphasis.

It also suffers because it decided to kill off the only endearing character at the end of the 2nd act.

The other part of the 'indie formula' above is that they come together they realize that things aren't that bad and it is society that's weird.

thedarkshadow 2007-02-25 02:22:45 PM
Holy carp.

This movie blows the goat.

It's a lame attempt at a National Lampoon movie.

Without the laughs.

Save your money.

//have a cookie.

It was a fun movie that had me laughing out loud at parts.

Well made, acted, and written.

Here's hoping it surprises tonight.

c_ellis 2007-02-25 02:31:47 PM
man, i loved that movie. i think i almost peed myself during the whole VW horn scene.

/also saw it right after pans labrynth
//i needed to find a happy place

GoHomeAndGetYourShinebox [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 02:41:28 PM
If this wins tonight, it will easily be the worst film ever to win Best Picture. And that's saying something.

Fortunately, it won't.

richlip 2007-02-25 02:42:25 PM
Wait, that was supposed to be a comedy?

vale2dobaby 2007-02-25 02:42:59 PM
c_ellis Did you sneak in to see it after Pan?

nogalltogether 2007-02-25 02:47:14 PM
I watched it again the other night and laughed even more. I thought it was a great film. The end with the dancing is one of my favorite endings of any movie.

radiofreewill [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 04:18:58 PM
The producers should stop worrying about the 3 producer limit. After all, the film is much too good to win an Oscar.

ComicBookGuy 2007-02-25 04:21:07 PM
MorningBreath: definitely not a great, or even good movie in my opinion.

Please list the Oscars you've been nominated for.

I loved this movie. One of the best dates I ever had with my boyfriend.

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 05:24:07 PM
Beyond not knowing The Sting was the last comedy to win Best Picture, decidedly not in the 30s, using the ridiculous "and what did you ever do [in whatever field]?" argument is of course bullshiat. Let's not criticize anything outside of what we actually do, which I'm sure is a rule you strenuously follow in your own life.

entropic_existence [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 05:49:40 PM
I thought Little Miss Sunshine was Great but I'm rooting for The Departed.

catatonicsrus 2007-02-25 05:54:47 PM
The Nazis hated little miss sunshine too. That is all.

/if babel wins best pic then i will

Robert1966 [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 06:58:07 PM
It was good, but not Oscar-worthy. But then, what was? Oh, yeah, "Children of Men," which wasn't nominated.

SniperMike 2007-02-25 07:56:46 PM
Yeah Children of Men not being nominated for best picture is a slap in the face to all movie fans

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 08:01:19 PM
Eh, SIL was a drama.

/Children of Men not getting nominated was classic Academy garbage

Bonzy20: /Name the last comedy to win Best Picture..

My first guess was It Happened One Night, and that was the mid-30s. A good movie if you haven't seen it, btw.

Shakespeare in love? The Sting? I wouldn't call either a true "comedy". Good movies w/comedic moments in them, perhaps.

zooklaw7 2007-02-25 08:38:46 PM
Indie is Hollywood's new genre for shiat at wholesale production values, with the attempt at pulling art out of their money-lined asses via supposed kitsch.

Most real indie films don't get distribution easily, let alone within even two years.

I'm with Joe Bob Briggs on LMS... He called it a bad version of National Lampoon's Vacation. or something to that effect.

rtadoyle 2007-02-25 11:51:43 PM
currykarae: I loved this movie. One of the best dates I ever had with my boyfriend.

Quoted for truth. Lonely farkers might not find the film very good. But take your chick to see it (or snuggle up on the couch). Girls seem to love it, and if you suggest it, you should be able to get some action.

/worked for me.

LobsterAfternoon 2007-02-26 12:31:27 AM
Shouldn't this have the "Obvious" tag?

frupert the nude apricot 2007-02-26 03:16:12 AM
umm, i dont consider it indie if it has widespread TV advertisements :)

"I'm madly in love with you! And it's not because of your brains or your personality - it's because you're beautiful!"

That's a great line.

RecliningBuddha [TotalFark] 2007-02-26 12:31:59 PM
I liked the movie alot. Abby Breslin is a bright new face and has a lot of potential. It's nice to see a part meant for a child-- that is realistic. I'll take her over Dakota Fanning (every movie is a nonstop "I'm scawwed" whimpering marathon) any day.

ryarger 2007-02-26 01:16:57 PM
Excellent movie. Probably the funniest I've seen since Rat Race. Let that be your gauge for artistic compatibility.
