I think that this guy is an actual genius.

EliWho 2007-02-24 11:20:18 PM
That really is tremendous. Way to go, Craig.

This man is pure class.

if this isn't Green'd, Fark should shut down.

Yesdog [TotalFark] 2007-02-24 11:24:51 PM
Yeah, I saw that and realized just how classy Craig Ferguson was.

monty666 [TotalFark] 2007-02-24 11:29:09 PM
What a pussy. No, just kidding, that was one of the best monologues I've seen on network TV.

Persepolis 2007-02-24 11:37:56 PM
I went in and prepared to come back full of snark, but that was right on.

Good monologue, good submition.

Mr. Programmer 2007-02-24 11:43:38 PM
cool.. too bad i dont watch late night tv anymore

Wombatzu 2007-02-25 01:19:11 AM
every once in a while tv is worth a damn...

Hoboclown 2007-02-25 01:21:58 AM
I've never watched his show before but I think I may start. I'm still a big Conan O'Brien fan, but the choice will be pretty clear when unfunny Jimmy Fallon takes over Late Night.

d'art 2007-02-25 01:25:49 AM
I'm seriously thinking about writing him a congratulatory letter about the whole 15 years thing. If I were a recovering alcoholic I certainly would.

Wow. It's good to see someone using their fame for a good cause.

Way to go, Craig.

bainsguy 2007-02-25 01:37:12 AM
I was skeptical at first about his replacement of Kilborn (Kilborn's douchebaggery had a certain charm), but this cemented it. Ferguson is the superior Craig. Period.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 01:44:39 AM
Craig needs to man up. Funny is our response to pain. The reason ANS and Britney are so much fun to ridicule, is that their situations pain us so greatly. When you stop laughing at what hurts you, you give in to the absurdity that is life. Pain makes no sense to human. Not real pain, ANS and Britney are the two main founts of pain in entertainment right now. So we poke fun and ridicule, because..........THAT IS HOW HUMANS REACT TO PAIN. Oh much better it would be not to pick at the wound to let it heal over and not to mention them, because it's so painful? Oh yes that's right farktards. They brought their lives on themselves. I've had huge problems with alcohol, hell i still do. All the stupid shiat I've done while drunk, is hilarious. Even the shiat that put me in a hospital for 5 days, and the shiat that put me in a jail for 3. That was 15 years ago, I've been sober for quite some time. It doesn't mean that it's not funny. I was not only an asshole, i was a drunken asshole. I broke my ankle so badly in a car wreck, that i have 9 screws in it now. Some of you might not think that's funny. You're assholes. I was an idiot and got what idiots deserve. People who consciously go out and fark up their lives deserve to be ridiculed and mocked. Choosing to be a drunken(or hopped up, or stoned out) idiot is no way to go through life. Britney needs to be ridiculed because she's being an idiot....we need to laugh at idiots to keep their numbers down.

/they already own most the world.

Craig needs to man up. Funny is our response to pain

Difference is, you don't feel the pain with celebrities because you don't know them.

Don't tell me you actually hurt emotionally about Britney Spears.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 01:51:45 AM
It's not that I hurt emotionally about Britney, it's that she represents what a bunch of farktards humans are. It's a miserable and disgusting thing to see. Yes, watching Britney, is painful. If you don't feel pain at the kind of shape she's in you have no empathy........and really need to not procreate.

xBodo99 2007-02-25 01:52:56 AM
ArmoredFelix

Some of those kinds of things end up being funny to you, in retrospect. With ANS and Britney, we're basically rubber-necking at a car wreck as we drive by. It's more demeaning to the spectator than it is to those experiencing the tragedy first hand.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 01:53:33 AM
ArmoredFelix

Hehe, you're hilarious. 18 and favoring the color black?

xBodo99 2007-02-25 01:57:44 AM
ArmoredFelix

Craig needs to man up. Funny is our response to pain.

Just wanted to add, nothing about what Craig said even implies that we can't have a sense of humor about pain. He even presented some extremely painful moments in his own life as humorous.

Finding amusement in another person's pain isn't empathy, it's sadism.

"Finding amusement in another person's pain isn't empathy, it's sadism."
You keep using that word sadism, i do not think it means what you think it means.
1. The deriving of sexual gratification or the tendency to derive sexual gratification from inflicting pain or emotional abuse on others.
Yet again, HUMOR, not amusement, is our reaction to pain. If you're going to try to argue, at least argue the points I made.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 02:08:05 AM
But you don't feel any pain for them.

Therefore your argument seems really juvenile.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 02:08:44 AM
Any of you guys ever hear of Lenny Bruce?

Ha, you really are 18, aren't you?

Welcome to the world of grown-ups.

SchrodingersCar 2007-02-25 02:10:03 AM
I agree with Armored that laughter and humor is essential to get through this world, but it seems to me that laughing at ANS and Britney isn't about "laughing at the pain" - as much as mocking someone in order to belittle and separate them from yourself so you don't have to face the fact that it could very easily be you.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 02:12:09 AM
Are you paying attention to what i am saying? I feel NO SYMPATHY OR PAIN for them. I feel pain over what a horrible representation of how low the human race can go with all of the advantages in the world. It's miserable that Britney has ended up in the condition she's in with all of the WONDERFUL advantages she had. Somewhat the same thing with ANS, not quite as bad as britney but close.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2007-02-25 02:13:33 AM
Ok, so you're 16 years old.

I overestimated with the 18 mark.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 02:15:09 AM
Confabulat, you're right, i'm 18 and have no reason to be speaking like this, but i do it to control lil people like you. I make you post responses then i sit in the corner and giggle while masturbating with monkey shiat............you caught me.

It's not laughing at them, it's laughing at the horror and stupidity of their situations. I have nothing but sympathy for both ANS and Britney........well at least as much as i care about them. And Britney's rich and young.........fark her I guess. Too bad she's stupid........anyways. They both made some really bad decisions in life. Vibrant young HITTABLE women both of them. and they ruined it. I mourn the loss of the the boobies for one. They're both asstards, everyone knows that. But it's just distressing when someone with so many advantages, is so determined to fark up their lives as badly as possible.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 02:23:06 AM
still quite funny though

FireGuts 2007-02-25 02:37:02 AM
Wow. I feel a bit bad that as he's talking I've got a pint of Guinness going on my desk here, but wow.

You know, he is right, in that it's kind of sad how we all laugh at celebrities and figure they deserve it for either being rich or choosing their profession, or both. And it's true, it is their choice at times, I mean if you look at chaps like Kevin Spacey, when have you ever seen that man in the tabloids? If you don't do stupid shiat, you won't get lambasted.

Regardless, he is right. These people clearly have problems and it's a bit gauche to mock them for it so blatantly; props to him also for discussing his previous alcoholism. It runs in my family and I didn't drink until I was 19 out of fear of it.

duncangonuts 2007-02-25 02:37:56 AM
I don't think Craig is saying that we should never poke fun at tragedy. He just wanted to take a moment to say, "Yeah we've gotten some good laughs out of you Britney but seriously, stop jerking around and go get some real help before you get yourself or someone else hurt or killed."

Of course, he said it in a nicer and more empathetic way...

Premeditated_Road_Rage 2007-02-25 02:40:37 AM
Pah! I don't think that laughing at ANS or Britney or any of the other fame-fueled train wrecks are any different than laughing at "World's Dumbest Criminals", ""America's Funniest Videos", or anything of that sort. No, I don't know the name of the dumb ass robber who ran out of the bank with the money stuffed down the front of his pants, only to discover that the term 'exploding dye-pack' contains the word 'exploding' for a reason. No, I don't know the name of the dumb ass getting slammed in the ham by a baseball bat at a kid's pinata party. Yes, i do know the name of the dumb ass shaving her head before taking an umbrella to her soon-to-be-ex's car.

"Give so-and-so a break because they are famous/dead?" I say "No chance in hell."

Let's face it... ANS isn't farking blushing at the moment unless the mortician's making her do it, people, and any embarrassment felt by her friends family simply stems from the truth of her wild lifestyle and the fact that all of the world farking knew about it. shiat...I've seen guests on Maury Povich (sp?) who were more sure of who their baby's daddy was than ANS.

And Britney? You're from Louisiana, girl... And worth millions. Want to disappear off of the radar for a while? Go buy a small, modest home in the damn country, take the kids there, and funnel all outside contact with the world through your lawyer for a month or so. hire a local kid, make him/her sign a non-disclosure agreement, give 'em some cash to go get your groceries. Sure, it may suck to be like 'a prisoner in your own home' for a while, but at least you'd get out of the limelight for a while instead of confirming your reservation beside Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson at the "No...no...no...Don't call us...we'll call you, ok?" table.

/just my $.02
//hopes that Britney hits someone's dead pool in enough time for American Idol to bring Britney 2.0 on-line without a career overlap.

tsferg 2007-02-25 02:52:46 AM
Great, now he can not be funny while making jokes about topics other than Britney and Anna Nicole. Snark Snark Snarky Snark.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 02:57:11 AM
Listen, these two women, if they had the choice, would choose what's happened to them, OVER having 3kids, a husband who hit them only occasionally and never having to work. They would take what they had. They're both smart girls......omg did i just say that?

SchrodingersCar 2007-02-25 02:59:11 AM
Ok Armored has completely lost me.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 03:00:42 AM
Rush22=dipshiat, no ability to form an insult, not examining what someone says(like the protestants), asstard douche.

SchrodingersCar 2007-02-25 03:02:32 AM
I think the whole point is, while ANS and Britney are not the brightest of bulbs, they both obviously have/had problems with substance abuse. And Craig can say first hand that that nightmare is a lot harder to overcome than just "Don't be stupid". So you can mock and heckle - it's human nature, but try to get a dose of perspective first.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 03:04:27 AM
SchrodingersCar keep up??? I don't know, where'd you lose me. I'll try to make myself more clear. Serious.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 03:09:43 AM
The nightmare of substance abuse.........it's a lot harder to overcome than "Don't be stupid"? Dude I drink WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more than any reasonable human would. That's probably the reason that most my points are so disjointed and don't make sense. Although that's not the same thing as substance abuse..........you don't get to substance abuse just all of the sudden. It takes a progression. Too many chicklets

Cathaleon 2007-02-25 03:10:01 AM
Armored,

I have to side with others here -- you sound as if you're 18. Or just really unintelligent. Your sadism bit is what tipped it for me. It's very common for teenagers and the dumb to grab the first line from a dictionary and claim that that's the whole meaning of a word.

In colloquial terms, sadism means any form of extreme cruelty. His use of the term is correct. More so for pleasure in it. The sexual side of (from which it derived its name eponymously from the Marquis) is the original use of the word, but one of the least common in Western society.

But, then, you appear to think you're brighter than everyone else, so I'm sure you don't bother researching before you speak.

ArmoredFelix 2007-02-25 03:14:08 AM
Actually you caught me out, i did take the first meaning because it validated my point of view. OTOH the first meaning is the most commonly accepted. Colloquial terms are not applicable in this instance. Because i said so, Nancy Reagan. If you haven't noticed that i'm 20% troll by now, i wonder if you ever will.

eikni 2007-02-25 03:16:56 AM
Webster's
1 : a sexual perversion in which gratification is obtained by the infliction of physical or mental pain on others (as on a love object) -- compare MASOCHISM
2 a : delight in cruelty b : excessive cruelty
You are number 2 troll.
