It will either be a Joy Ride or an Armageddon, eh subby?

JJ Abrams, in my opinion, has a bit of a history of starting things off with a very cool concept and execution, but that soon degenerate into an unwatchable mess so top-heavy with webs of mysterious crap that it'll self destruct.

So it'll eventually turn out that Kirk was a Q but his memories were altered before he created the Vulcan civilization and the galaxy is shaped like a map to god's brain and OH MY GOD what's that black thing?

Jesus, did Access Hollywood write this headline?

If nothing else, it should be interesting and entertaining to watch. Alias and Lost both had great first seasons, so they'll let Abrams reboot Trek in a good way and then re-hire Berman to run it into the ground again.

Question: If you're going to make a movie based on a franchise, but ignore everything about that franchise, recast key characters, and basically throw out everything that would establish it as part of that franchise- WHY THE HELL EVEN BOTHER?

Look, I'd love a new movie that was perhaps, Trek-like, but offered a new set of characters, new rules for the Universe. I'd love something ORIGINAL.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2007-02-24 04:36:18 PM
The Star Trek universe is one of the biggest ever created so what do they do? Start over with Kirk and Spock. Idiots.

Because they are retarded. No one takes a lesson from TNG - use the universe, but expand it. Show us something else. This movie is going to suck because its retarded.

Look at where we left on with DS9 - there's a whole Delta Quadrant to explore! A newfound friendship between Cardassians, Human, Romulans, and Klingons. Amazing stories are possible.

But no. We get Kirk.

fark you, whoever made this decision.

Exactly. Section 31, the Delta and Gamma quadrants, the time ships, hell, destroy the Federation and put everyone on the run. Do something. Going back to the beginning is just admitting that they're out of gas.

I'm torn between giddy glee at a new Trek movie, and praying to all the gods of Sci Fi they don't fark it up as badly as Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels. I will go see it as soon as it comes out, I've been a Star Trek fan since I was like 4, bu I still fear this.

Mugato: Going back to the beginning is just admitting that they're out of gas.

Of course they ran out of ideas. look at how the last movie ended. One of the more favorite characters, while trying to save the ship and crew, sacrificed himself. Then after he died, he sort of came back to life, only a little different.

I've been hoping for a DS9 movie but gave up on that a long time ago.

To top it off, I just proved how much of a geek I am.

Queeg: I've been hoping for a DS9 movie but gave up on that a long time ago.

Here's what they should have done. Star Trek 9, the one after First Contact should have been about The Dominion War and incorporated the TNG and DS9 crews instead of whatever the hell Star Trek 9 was about. Make it a balls out war movie, Star Wars style.

I know that's not what Trek is supposed to be about but we're trying to sell tickets and keep the interest alive here. Then they could have continued the movie franchise with the DS9 crew or even eased into Voyager, make their homecoming a feature. With interest renewed, they could have gone back to studying the human condition and all that gay stuff Trek is supposed to be about.

Instead, they painted themselves into a corner with the TNG crew who they knew wouldn't last forever. Then they do a prequel series that failed and their solution? Another prequel.

It's like farking spider monkeys are running this franchise.

/Section 31 movie FTW

I think most people who liked Alias will agree that JJ Abrams and his overinflated ego needs to just farking go away.

I noticed that he directed the last episode of 'The Office'. When I saw the credits, I immediately thought "oh shiat, can't this farker ruin a show I don't like for a change". Surprisingly, that episode turned out to be pretty great. I guess even a blind hen finds a grain of corn sometimes.

A good Klingon-based movie would be keen. With or without Michael Dorn. All the obligatory violence, and Honor instead of Prime Directives. And get Quentin to direct it.
And not a fan movie, either. they never seem to get the ridges right. Among other things.
..there's been worse:

You forgot to capitalize Reboot, smitty (best show on that little list, too).

Somebody hasn't told Abrams that odd numbered Trek films suck.

Are you implying that Nemesis was good?

xsarien 2007-02-24 11:21:37 PM
Seriously, I really don't care, and I'm saying that as a completely disenchanted Trek fan.

The subtitle for this movie - and I'm just spitballin' here - will probably be Star Trek XII: Hey, We Both Know It's Only Up From Nemesis.

Bring on the prequels.

Gahbrone 2007-02-24 11:47:49 PM
they should let trek sit fallow for maybe another few years... then come at us with something post DS9... maybe a decade or so... anything is possible then, but you can still play off the "technology" we know, the "politics" we know

...section 31 cool. but it always felt so random, like the writer was taking a dump, and was like... WD40 ---> area 51 ----> section 31!

some_beer_drinker 2007-02-24 11:51:14 PM
you all need to STFU. it will be good, i have faith.

/hated that theme song...oh god, my ears.

Hevach 2007-02-25 12:12:31 AM
But no. We get Kirk.

Worse, we get teenage Kirk at Starfleet Academy.

I like Gahbrone's thinking. They closed DS9 just begging for a movie continuation, and the late episodes of DS9 and Voyager both showed off some new technology that would be more interesting than revisiting old TOS-era ships that have been expounded on for so long that there's no surprise left. I certainly HOPE I'm not the only person who'd like to see more of this SOB.

Oh god... I hope not. Was Nemesis even numbered?

They'll have to change the credo to 'Even numbered Trek films don't necessarily suck' now, I guess...

So what you're saying is Andy Dick could save the franchise?

No wait, they did that in Nemisis.

VoiceOfBob 2007-02-27 10:25:50 PM
Nemesis was good. A great script by John Logan. That script goes vastly under-appreciated and was a terrific read before I saw the train wreck that was on the screen.

Stuart Baird is a bad director. Need to watch Casino Royale again to see if I dislike his editing as much.

Berman & Braga, just shut up. Forever.
