Presumably after a long and drawn out illness?

Lothar-Guenther Buchheim, the German author best known for his autobiographical novel Das Boot, has died of heart failure at age 89.

Nope, just old age.
Unless you count life as a long drawn out illness.

First day at submarine school, instructor tells us to go out and watch "Das Boot"

So I go.

Scariest damn movie I ever did watch.

Did you ask yourself: "What did I get myself into?"

Ofc, you weren't going to be on some oily diesel boat. Probably.

Did you ask yourself: "What did I get myself into?"

Yes, but I had already taken the bonus for signing up. So, I really didn't have any chance to go back.

OTOH, I like to point out that it only got tough for us when the ice cream machine broke.

// as opposed to having someone shoot at you..

I recently re-read Das Boot. I didn't find it long and drawn out but an interesting look at the lives of the men on the sub. Reading it just for the thrills of WW2 submarine combat would probably be frustrating.

I'm surprised that the Submitter didn't use the following headline: "Author of Das Boot kicked Das Bucket"

maddogdelta,

We watched it as part of our GMT underway. I am sure the COB was trying to reinforce the importance of teamwork but the ending didn't do much for us.

I don't think you could pay me enough to seal myself in a metal tube that goes deep underwater. That's just silliness.

/with or without ice cream

Will the funeral have subtitles, or just be dubbed into English?

Wow, I'm watching Das Boot right now.

Quite possibly one of the single best war movies ever made... Wolfgang Petersen had a completely accurate U-boat interior constructed for filming, correct right down to the valves and piping, and this set piece was mounted such that when the scene called for the boat to be shaken by depth charges, it literally shook the actors all over the damn place.

Further info at Uboat.net (clicky-poppy)

/plays a refrain of 'Muss i denn' for Herr Buchheim

It's a long way to Tipperary!

RIP, funnyman

/wept the first time I saw Das Boot when the U-96 was reversing away from the burning tanker, while the men on board screamed for help and burned. Good god, war is hell.

Ace Frehley wrote Das Boot?

The german word 'boot' is pronounced just like the english word 'boat'.
/hates it when people mispronounce it.
//but am sure most Farkers don't.
