(CNN) Unlikely CNN journalist proudly reports that America's Martin Luther King streets are far from the stereotypical "crime-ridden, low-income areas that are full of blight." Yet another crack piece of journalism from CNN   (cnn.com) divider line 316

Toby Keith BLVD is pretty pimp here. It's got a school.

Garth Brooks BLVD? Not so much.

MLK BLVD? You gonna get raped.

I drive on MLK Dr every so often here in Atlanta, when avoiding I75 traffic that has backed up. It's really not that bad.

zappaisfrank [TotalFark] 2007-02-22 07:38:56 AM
MLK near me is a cruddy little connector street that runs from the back of a mall out to another nothing street that runs by some apartment buildings.

I remember MLK in New Orleans as being pretty bad in places. I don't remember for sure but I thought there was a project on that street. (or am I thinking of Jackson st?)

I am convinced that MLK in in New Orleans served as the inspiration for Chris Rock's joke. Pre-K, you didn't stop at for gas at any intersection with MLK unless you wanted to get mugged, and I know some folks in school who did, in broad daylight, while people watched and did nothing.

In St. Louis, not only do we have a Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, we have a Jesse Jackson Avenue.

Ya srsly. Go to maps.google.com and do a search for "jesse jackson st. louis, mo".

Yeah, but did you have a Dr. Dre Drive and a Tupak Shakur Avenue? Huh? Huh?

I'll see your MLKJr. BLVD and raise you a New Hampshire Ave. NE.

MLK in Baltimore isn't *that* bad, but the streets right off MLK on the west side are BAD. Its basically on open heroin market.

Its like watching 'the wire' but live.

Oh, sure. But you want seriously dangerous streets, check out Honkey McWifebeater Lane in Memphis. It's like "Cops" every day there.

MLK Blvd., here in Cleveland has two sections, one leading South from University Circle which isn't ghetto per se, but scared white kids at CWRU seem to avoid it. Going North, however, is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in all of Cleveland, with a long park filled with gardens on both sides and it goes all the way up to Lake Erie. The locals say "ZOMG! DON'T JOG THERE AT NIGHT!!" but that goes without saying in any park in any major city.

fernanernie 2007-02-22 11:35:04 AM
On the local MLK here, it isnt that crime ridden, but I have driven on dirt roads 10x smoother.

MLK Blvd. in Lansing is okay. Certainly no uglier than any other Lansing street...which are, in Lansing, ugly as all hell.

Seconded. MLK is one of the most scenic roads in Cleveland. I drive on it every time I go down to University Circle or Little Italy (it's the best way to get there from I-90).

Not here.

Curiously, Kelly Drive, named after Grace Kelly's father, is very nice with crew boat houses, top museum of art, sculpture garden, place where many take wedding photos, and a bike trail.

/Philadelphia's MLK is not very clean and people aren't articulate

MLK Blvd is probably the most crime-ridden street in Atlanta. Sure, you can drive through it without much trouble. A lot of people think if you drive through the ghetto random black people will just come up and shoot you, which is really ridiculous.

But I wouldn't walk it alone at night. No way in hell.

ScottMpls 2007-02-22 11:42:20 AM
Most MLK streets I know of go right through or by the 'hood. I doubt you'll see one bordering a country club or gated community.

Well, I've walked it alone back and forth to Lenny's or cutting through the cemetary many times at night.

If you think MLK is the most crime-ridden street in Atlanta... you haven't seen very much of Atlanta.

MLK in detroit: NO GO YOU DIE
MLK in St. Pete: NO GO YOU DIE

No shiat. While traveling on MLK/NINTH Street in St. Pete I've had bottles tossed at my car, a gun pointed at me, and some eight year old kid climb up on my hood, sit down and flick me off (all in broad daylight, although the gun thing was right at sunset). It's since gotten a little better though.

The funniest thing was an editorial in the Times that the fact that Ninth..er...Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior Street was one way going south (as in black folks couldn't take it to get to the north side) was just another sign of the endemic racism of St. Pete.

Baron-Harkonnen 2007-02-22 11:46:45 AM
Err, make that MLK Drive. Leave it to a simple OTP like myself to screw that up.

That is all.

WayneKerr 2007-02-22 11:46:48 AM
Our MLK in Oakland used to be called Grove Street back until I think the 60's. Why go through the trouble of renaming a street? They should have just named it MLK from the beginning.
