Boy, I hope that animated show is going to be just as good as the Star Wars Christmas Special.

i agree, manfred.

-that was the most disgusting edit of all time.

wtf was lucas thinking at the time?

iirc...speilberg and lucas both pulled that shiat at about the same time.

i smell a 'fight' club.

Only an undigified-farked-about-edition where han shoots first will give me a reason to buy it. i havent any starwars dvds so far.

They should get the same guys that did "Clone Wars". That was some gooooooooooooood watchin'.

The "Greedo shot first" edit is not only terrible looking, with some incredibly fake-ass looking CGI, it makes no sense dramatically. It makes total sense that Han would shoot first; it's his only real option. Greedo is either going to shoot him, or take him hostage. I think negotiation was over.

That is, it doesn't make Han look like a bad guy to shoot first. Lucas thinking that it does calls his sense of character and dramatics into question.

Lucas pretty much did everything possible to make me hate star wars. It was no easy feat considering how much I loved the old trilogy. But some how he managed it.

Han IS a 'bad' guy...he smuggles warez around the universe...

/Han should have shot Lucas a long time ago

Lucas at a recent Publicist's Guild luncheon honoring Sid Ganis:

"Sid is the reason why The Empire Strikes Back is always written about as the best of the films, when it actually was the worst one."

The man is seriously delusional.

In the motion picture business they call that a "joke".

Well, he's a criminal, but I don't think that he's evil at any point in the trilogy. Lucas was afraid that shooting first would make him look evil, which is ridiculous.

From the first time I saw A New Hope, at eight years old, Han shooting first never registered as a loathesome act. He was obviously the hero-type between the two of them. Anyone who's going to think about Solo's intentions at that point in the film is operating at too cerebral a level to really enjoy the film.

EXACTLY! Han is a scoundrel, only interested in himself and his money. That's the big character growth he makes - going from scoundrel to a hero of the Republic.

If he was always the good guy, there was never any character growth to speak of.

That's the same reason I loathe Lucas for putting Hayden Christensen in at the end of ROTJ. By making the "ghost Anakin" the young Anakin, instead of the old man, then that means Anakin really DID die when he became Vader. If so, then Luke didn't save his father - he just killed some masked bad guy.

You know who's going to be there, don't you? Han Solo. Hands so low, you can't see what they're doing.

He should just admit that "The Phantom Edit" is the superior version and make it the official one.

Maybe he'll edit Episodes 1-3 so that they won't suck anymore.

FYI to anyone that said they are waiting for the original originals on DVD. They are. I bought mine a few months ago.

Scoundrel?

SCOUNDREL?

I like the sound of that.

Then just look for the 2-disc editions of any of the original films. Disc 2 contains the original theatrical cut in each release.

That edit actually doesn't really bother me. It seems kind of silly that their Force ghost would become someone who never even existed. Makes more sense to me that they look like the person they remember themself as, or want to look like.

I thought about that, but they aren't a proper release in my eyese because of the following:

1. They aren't anamorphic widescreen. They are simply the laserdisc versions on dvd.

2. They aren't restored in any way. This means they are poor transfers. When I say restored I mean the colour balance is right and there aren't artifacts everywhere etc.

3. They are clearly an afterthought by Lucas Marketing co, a dvd release to get people like me to buy without putting any effort into it. A cheap laserdisc repackage in a new format. They dont deserve my cash for that.

Jeez, this is nuts. And I say this as someone who owns all three releases of the Lord of the Rings films, but I only bought those because I really, really, really wanted the extras. I've probably spent more time watching the extras than I have watching the films themselves.

Guntram Shatterhand 2007-02-10 11:53:51 PM
I'm wondering if someone shouldn't just edit the whole second trilogy into one gigantic movie and save everybody the time. It'll be a full three hour film, but at least it won't suck the life out of everything.

I'm as big a Star Wars fan as there is, but I have no problem admitting that had Ford and Fisher not been in the original cast, the first trilogy may have been as shiatty as the prequels. Ford and Fisher questioned Lucas at every turn, helping turn his wordy, boring script into something good.

Troo dat.

Carrie Fisher knows good writing... because she's a good writer. That she agreed to be in SW at all after seeing Lucas' script was probably because she was young. Not that I don't thank her for it.

My guess for the 30th anniversary DVD release is that LFL will re-release the latest versions (SE & original versions) in one combined box set. To get fans like me to buy the DVDs for a third time, they'll likely throw in a couple of new documentaries culled from old interviews and footage left out of others made over the last 30 years.

Me, I'm holding out for a commentary track for the original trilogy. And not from Ben Burtt and Denis Muren. I want Lucas, Hamill, Fisher, Ford, Williams, and Daniels. Only then will I be truly satisfied.
