We must ban hand sanitizer. Won't someone please think of the children?

Sidi 2007-02-04 03:53:55 PM
Well, I certainly wouldn't mind if they started banning the Triclosan based ones. The ethanol based ones don't bother me though, they aren't creating resistance.

Why do you hate antibiotic resistant bacteria?

Nabb1 [TotalFark] 2007-02-04 04:28:18 PM
Those things are great at killing benign bacteria and not so good at killing the virulent nasty stuff. Use good old fashioned soap and water.

Those things are great at killing benign bacteria for a buzz and not so good at killing the virulent nasty stuff when there are alternatives. Use good old fashioned soap and water beer.

Back in my day all we had was Listerine. Kids these days.

There's going to be bubbles when the sanitizer hits the anus.

Jail ain't so bad. You get to make sangria in the terlet. 'Course, it's shank or be shanked.

I personally feel that people that can't fight off bacteria on their own are just pansies.

Don't get the hand sanitizer from Home Depot...that stuff smells like a skunk.

"The Maryland inmate, described as usually calm, seemed intoxicated and began "lecturing everybody about life" after imbibing the Purell, Doyon said."

Jeebus, you can't even get away from these type of drunks in jail.

Next time I'm in a CVS, I'm gonna go up to the hand sanitizer section and yell out loud, "Hey everyone, drinks are on me!"

submitter: found with a BAL of 0.33

Oh..BAL ..Blood alcohol level....Instead of BAC Blood alcohol content..

Seen a warning on this just the other day to not ingest the handwash..

Krycek 2007-02-04 05:36:58 PM
On the local news there was a story about a 4 yr old that got drunk on the stuff. mother didn't know why her little girl was acting so strange till they got to the hospital.

tried to submit it but found no link to the story.

I'm hand sanitizer and I'm getting a kick out of these replies. This is how bad information is spread!

Now if only anybody told me about this while I was hanging around in Baghdad,...PX brand mouthwash and Robitussin are a brutal combination.

when they outlaw hand sanitizer, only outlaws will have sanitized hands...

Jument 2007-02-04 05:44:06 PM
If you use hand sanitizer you are IMHO a giant pussy. Back in my day we washed our hands when they were dirty and it worked fairly well.

/git off mah lawn you clean freaks!

Now if I could only figure out how to remove the alcohol from the sanitizer, no more need to bug parents to buy my liquor~

SchlingFo 2007-02-04 05:50:08 PM
Nabb1: Use good old fashioned soap and water.

Hand sanitizer is good for the medical setting when you're seeing a shiatload of PTs and don't have time to constantly go to the bathroom to wash your hands.

The 49-year-old Maryland inmate seemed seriously sick after he drank from a gallon container of hand sanitizer

I have a costco size bottle of that shiat on my desk @ work. I have them fooled about the real reason it's there. Crunk 24/7

Kinmuan 2007-02-04 05:52:07 PM
We all get Purell stuff in the Army.

I know people who have tried the getting drunk thing before;

But what's way more fun? Most of us carry lighters. Either your a smoker, or you burn off strings on your uniform, or you carry once just incase.

Wait until someone puts it on their hands, and rubs their hands together. When they pause for a moment, after they're done, quickly take your lighter out, and try to quickly catch their hands. Either with a spark or the flame.

It's really fun to watch. I've never seen anyone get hurt. But the sudden, OH shiat HANDS ON FIRE, SLAP IT OUT - OH CRAP NOW MY OTHER HAND IS ON FIRE *tried to shake it off, burning sanitizer flies off onto the floor* AHHH CRAP SOMEONE HELP (is tackled by two people, flames extinguished).

Ahhh, memories.

Kroger has this stuff at 10 for $10 right now.

I bought four.

I rubbed it all over my body.

I feel so clean.

Come lick me and you'll taste the love.

She called for limited access to hand sanitizers in rehab clinics, prisons and hospitals.

yeah, limiting access to hand sanitizer in hospitals is a good idea.

DaRblGen 2007-02-04 06:18:20 PM
...Hmmm this gives me ideas. But only get the clear hand sanitizer, None of that green flavored purell for me.

logruszed 2007-02-04 06:25:04 PM
packingheat: Ther is strong anectodal evidence supported by peer review in The Lancet and the NEJM to suggest that misuse of antibacterial sanitizers lead to antibiotic resistant strains of staph and other icky bugs.

Thankfully Joseph Lister and Pasteur (among others) helped invented a miracle solution about a bajillion years ago called carbolic soap.

jheesh and i've been using the equivalent of 90-95% vodka with a shot of dry SDS added in a spray bottle to sanitize my hands for plant tissue culture - - why did i never think of this?

oh yeah. cause i'm a researcher and need sterile arms.

alcohol is just a chemical. abuse happens when someone misuses it.

/also, guns don't kill people.

FTFA: "Purell, which is 70 percent alcohol, is far more potent than beer (5 percent), wine (10 percent) or hard liquor (40 percent)."

Clearly the writer has never heard of 151 or other excellent hard liquor.

tonesskin: Won't someone please think of the children?

The alarmists where I work (a juvenile residential treatment facility) is this week taking out all their hand sanitizers because this was reported last week. Farking alarmists. To hell with the benefits, let's just eliminate any potential for harm.

/am on the risk management team
//NOT the risk ELIMINATION team...

FauxReal 2007-02-04 06:41:52 PM
I thought hand sanitizer used isopropyl alcohol which can blind/kill you vs. ethanol which is the good stuff you drink in bars.

TripSixes 2007-02-04 06:44:33 PM
I prefer to sanitize from within.

tonesskin [TotalFark] 2007-02-04 06:45:04 PM
Clearly the writer has never heard of 151 or other excellent hard liquor.

Well, a traditional spirit is 40 percent.

And I hate crappy beer (5%).

The alarmists where I work (a juvenile residential treatment facility) is this week taking out all their hand sanitizers because this was reported last week. Farking alarmists. To hell with the benefits, let's just eliminate any potential for harm.

Wow. Cost/benefits ratio and stuff.

prjindigo 2007-02-04 06:47:44 PM
dude, I handled the kids at the prison I worked in as little as possible then explained to the boss of the facility that the soaps being used weren't antibacterial... switching to dial hand and body wash in showers would save the facility about A QUARTER MILLION IN MEDICAL PER YEAR but nooooo can't spend a thousand more per year!

That man was the sharpest most businesslike retard I have ever worked for.

Daveism 2007-02-04 06:51:04 PM
tonesskin: Cost/benefits ratio and stuff.

Point is, the kids don't have access to large quantities of the stuff, and the dispensers are in public areas- cafeteria waiting lines, outside the bathrooms, common areas in the residential units, etc... They are supervised, except when they're in the bathroom. They're not going to get ahold of enough of this stuff to cause harm, but in our setting, the bigger risk is communicable diseases. Thus, from a risk management perspective, it makes sense to me to keep the dispensers, maybe remove the ones that are the *least* observable, but keep the protection in place.

And I know the people involved- there was NO C/b ratio calculated!

Mugato [TotalFark] 2007-02-04 06:52:59 PM
prjindigo: dude, I handled the kids at the prison I worked in as little as possible

Dude, I don't think you're supposed to handle them at all. Perv.

And I know the people involved- there was NO C/b ratio calculated!

Haha, that's obvious!

On a side note, are you a government organization or contracting with them? I have dealt with juvenile "treatment" places before. It was funny because they would do things like this but wouldn't take dietary advice, etc. It's a thankless job, and you often have to answer to clinicians who just don't care (it's a side-job) or (even worse) some higher-up who just wants as much money as possible with as little work as possible.

Kudos to you for being there!

Daveism 2007-02-04 07:09:12 PM
Contract. I feel we actually do good work, and struggle with funding, just like every other non-profit. Yeah, the food services folks pretend to stick to the 'food pyramid', which means lots of carbs and a bit too much saturated fat. I actually moved up from working directly with the kids to being the entire IT department :)

The pay still sucks though. I just saw an ad for a basic pc help desk tech starting between $50k-65k. After 7 years in this position, I make $41k
