It's not really a "pig" in the porky way, and it doesn't "run".

Here are some GIS of pipeline pigs (Safe Search Off-Just so you know).

They should make tiny versions of these to scrape the fat out of peoples arteries.

Paraffin pigs are for pansies, there's nary an animal alive that can outrun a greased Scotsman.

I feel bad for the KGB defector inside TFA's pipeline pig. Can Dalton get him out?

They should make tiny versions of these to scrape the fat out of peoples arteries.

It takes additional power from the gas turbine pumps to ram these down the pipeline. To do it to someone with a bad arteries would probably give them a heart attack outright.

So they're finally doing the maintenance they weren't doing for decades.

is it a different type of pig then the one running thru the trans-sexual pipeline?

paraffin has never, ever worked for me.

Carl Winslow 2007-02-04 02:02:47 AM
I say this as someone who works in the industry, why the hell is this in the news?

This is a news release equivalent to your local cable company dropping the stream to the home shopping channel for 1 hour last Tuesday.... why anyone felt the need to report this is beyond me. I am sure the engineer got a kick out of the bozo reporter calling him.

/it does blow my mind there is an interest out there in the shiat I do for a living all of a sudden...

yotta 2007-02-04 02:03:26 AM
An Alyeska engineer described it as losing the pop top off of a soda can down the drain of a house

They wish. More like losing it down your throat. The paraffin pig is also a stainless steel pig. Hmmmm.

arcanereason 2007-02-04 02:05:03 AM
FTA "they will sift through the paraffin pushed out of the pipeline to see if it's there."

Reminds me of when I was a kid and I swallowed a quarter. Had to sift through some stuff myself, looking for it.

Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to paraffin?

Wblows

Pig usage is very closely monitored and tracked. The company I was doing tech support for had a section just for "pig data sheets".

Thats all well and good, but if the scraper pig is designed to break apart when it encounters an obstacle, and a scraper pig broke apart... What obstacle did it encounter and why is that not an issue?

prjindigo 2007-02-04 04:18:27 AM
hm... so lemme get this straight...

they sent a compact car down a tunnel and it got stuck, so they sent another compact car down the tunnel and it pushed out a truckload of butter and all but the body of the first car. The tunnel is one car wide...

where is the body of the second car hiding if it's NOT inside one of the checkvalves?

they need to farking check to see if the ring popped into one of the fullsize checkvalve bodies before they claim it isn't a risk to the checkvalves.

I used to work for the pipeline a few years ago. If you have any questions ...

bald_n_blue 2007-02-04 04:56:35 AM
For some of the naysayers .... the pipeline is 48" in diameter. The ring they're looking for is 20". Go figure.

KNW 2007-02-04 06:10:19 AM
It's prolly in the filter of whichever refinery the line terminates at. Never seen a 48" pig, but I did get to see an 18" one come flying out of a fuel gas line once. Bounced about fourty feet and banged up a bunch of cladding we'd just put on.

nonstopcrunchy [TotalFark] 2007-02-04 06:34:28 AM
You know, I'd pay good money to see a decent Stainless Steel Rat movie. Except for that silly one where he battles evil slimy aliens called Gar-bahj and such, that was kind of Dumb.

bald_n_blue 2007-02-04 06:42:25 AM
KNW - The pipeline does not terminate at a refinery. It terminates at the facility in the Port of Valdez. There are 18 tanks on the tank farm each capable of holding one million barrels of crude. (This is where they load the tankers at.) They have a special trap to catch all the pigs that come through, but no filters.

I'm with ya on that, lad.

James Bolivar diGriz is on my personal heroes list next to Henry Morgan. Unfortunately, few enough of us have that level of appreciation (in other words, box office returns), which guarantees if there ever is a movie, it won't get the proper investment of talent/funds to make it "decent".

Good examples of cult titles that could have been killer if done right but ended up as lousy movies (or worse) were Doom and Doc Savage.

I'd fear the same fate for the Rat. Better to remeber him as Mr. Harrison left him.

Diablo Trout 2007-02-04 07:11:32 AM
What a boring story.

Is it bowb your buddy week, or something?

KIA 2007-02-04 09:02:02 AM
+1 for DiGriz!!!

TotallyFarkedDude 2007-02-04 09:08:14 AM
Man, when are they going to make that into a movie? Or even better, give it the Showtime/Dexter treatment?

graveleye 2007-02-04 10:35:27 AM
diGriz FTW

I say dont make it into a movie... look what the fark they did with Battlefield Earth.

/will never hope to see my favorite books turned into a movie again.
