Two years ago, the Hardee's fast-food chain introduced the 1,420-calorie 107-fat-gram "Monster Thickburger." It contains two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese, and mayonnaise on a buttered sesame-seed bun.

And it's damn tasty. Have one for lunch, skip supper, spend the next day on the toilet.

Stand by your man: More than a decade ago, Manuel Uribe, now weighing 1,200 pounds (the equivalent of five baby elephants) and bedridden for the past five years, was abandoned by his wife because she was frightened by his increasing size.

No shiat!

She probably thought she would get lost in his folds.

Now, I am no supermodel, but I always have to wonder: how the hell does someone let themselves get so fat? I mean, you'd have to actively pursue it to get past a thousand pounds, wouldn't you?

That article should have been titled '20 things you never knew about being a shallow, self centered, image obsessed asshat but were afraid to ask'.

FTA - 10. Duke University Medical Center found that women and men who lost 10 percent of their total body weight reported a significant improvement in their sexual quality of life.

Because it gave them more sucking power?

15. Recent studies have shown that obesity can cause you to lose sleep.

16. On the other hand, a lack of sleep may result in obesity.

17. It's a vicious cycle.

17 shouldn't be an item on the list. Cutesy writing like this I'd expect from Cosmo, but I don't want to see it from my "science" mag.

Weaver95: That article should have been titled '20 things you never knew about being a shallow, self centered, image obsessed asshat but were afraid to ask'.

Said article is not talking about a little "junk in the trunk", its talking about obesity, which is a serious health issue. Nothing about image.

This article is astonishingly devoid of science for a "science publication"

If on the other hand you choose to continue to eat more than you do... you're going to keep getting fatter, fatty.

Also: 2. According to a study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, nearly half the 4,000 people responding to an online survey about obesity said they would give up a year of their life rather than be fat.

Doesn't it work the other way around?

6. In 2004, the Federal Aviation Administration increased its estimate of the weight of the average male from 170 to 184 pounds.

7. Airlines spent $275 million on 350 million additional gallons of fuel in 2000 to compensate for the additional weight of their passengers. Now we know why the peanuts are no longer free!

19. If the entire morbidly obese population of the U.S. lived in one state, it would be the 12th highest-populated state, with more people than Virginia.

When someone is that obese, you're dealing with more than poor eating habits. There's either depression or a medical problem involved as well. Many morbidly obese eat when they're depressed. Comfort food. They reach a point where they figure they so far gone, it doesn't matter anymore. Once you pass that point and eating becomes your only pleasure, it's only a matter of time.

It's like an alcoholic on a bender, only the alcoholic can pass out and sober up.

FTFA:

2. According to a study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, nearly half the 4,000 people responding to an online survey about obesity said they would give up a year of their life rather than be fat.

3. Between 15 percent and 30 percent also said they would rather walk away from their marriage, give up the possibility of having children, be depressed, or become alcoholic rather than be obese.

4. Five percent and 4 percent, respectively, said they would rather lose a limb or be blind than be overweight.

Isnt a healthy diet easier to deal with than giving up a year of your life, the ability to have children, and losing a limb? WTF is wrong with some people?

RocketRod: But is she cute in the face?

Damn you!! Cue evil flashback!

In college, a sweet, but obese coed complained to me that she always was given the "backhanded compliment" that she was "cute in the face" (she really was), so I said "That's mean, I think you're cute...period" or some such disastrous utterance (just trying to be nice!).

She semi-stalked me for the next two years.

Also, a lot of medications can adversely affect your metabolism and can lead to excessive weight gain.

I went from 140 lbs to 220 lbs in the course of two years, while not changing my eating habits or activity level due to one medication I was on. I went off it a couple years ago, and I'm still trying to get rid of the weight. I'm down to 200, but want to lose another 20 permanently.

Yeah, it sucks.

I don't think anyone chooses to be fat...rather, they consistently choose not to do the things they'd have to do to become thin.

The wankspeak comes because there's so much judgment and social opprobrium (some of it in their minds, some of it in the 'culture' (another way of saying it's in their minds), and some directly leveled upon them by others) attached to the disinterest.

Dorf11 2007-01-28 09:42:07 PM
From 1991 to 2000, the average weight of Americans increased by 8.5 pounds.

I'm no statistigrapher, but that's pretty farked up right there.

If anyone's interested, TLC is airing I Eat 33,000 Calories A Day again at 11pm EST. I caught the last 15 minutes of it earlier tonight, and it's really, really sad. Some people are addicted to food like it was crack cocaine.

Its that simple.
