Helmets are only worn by wimps, pussies, and, oh yes, people with some idea of what kind of severe damage can be done to the human body when an unhelmeted head is rammed into something hard. I have a fifty three year old cousin who has been brain damaged since he was hit by a car while bicycling at age twelve. Poster-man for helmets.

neeners 2007-01-28 06:34:49 PM
I guess you never knew a 6-year-old girl who died when her sled ran into a tree.

Consider yourself very lucky.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 06:40:09 PM
I knew a 13 year old boy who died when he ran headfirst into a tree while skiing without a helmet. I still think doctors should be forbidden from giving policy advice.

"I still think doctors should be forbidden from giving policy advice."

What the fark is that supposed to accomplish? We can't take advice from people with an education in a field to decide policy on that subject?

FastR1 [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 06:49:04 PM
yea...

And I knew of a kid who died when his sled fell through the ice on a pond once too.

/Maybe he should have been wearing a life jacket
//Don't tell Canada

While sled riding, I took out a 4"x4" post holding a bird feeder with my noggin once. The CAT Scan was very fun. I can't say I disagree with the Canucks on this one.

Blackbird [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 07:19:16 PM
The issue is to teach your kids when they wear a helmet is to ride their bikes/skateboards/tobogans like they're not wearing any helmets.

It's the kids who think they're invincible while wearing protection that will get them to take more risks than they usually would.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 07:25:23 PM
We can't take advice from people with an education in a field to decide policy on that subject?

If they want to suggest the relative merits of maggots and antibiotics for treating wounds, that's the field they are educated in. Telling people how to live their lives, that's a field they are less qualified in than a randomly chosen non-doctor.

Heroic Poser 2007-01-28 07:30:18 PM
My brother in laws sister was killed like this.
I have no problem with it, so fark off subby.

ZAZ: Telling people how to live their lives, that's a field they are less qualified in than a randomly chosen non-doctor.

Except if you're working in an ER, a rehab unit, or are an orthopedic surgeon and have to deal with the results of this kind of thing all of the time. I bet that it doesn't take too many times of seeing kids with fractured skulls/backs etc. before you wish that helmets were mandatory.

As it being canaduh...East indians otherwise know as seeks (turbans) will make up the fake excuse that their turbans can't be covered..So once again any law coming of this will be reguarded by the law (not the cops or politicians) as being rascist..

/Come to canaduh from your home country and change the laws to your prefered laws...

They should also wrap themselves in kevlar bubble wrap.

They'd then be bullet-proof, crush-resistant, fully buoyant, and able to bounce off things.

Sorry. This is like the minumum wage. When does it end?

/ besides, with "global warming" this problem soves itself
// same sort of people who advocate helmets for tobogganing also believe in "global warming"

The pussification of the 10000 kids wearing helmets outweighs the 1 kid that would die from hitting his noggin. Same goes for bikes, skateboards, rubber playgrounds etc.

Dorf11 2007-01-28 10:05:31 PM
And yet curlers - who get drunk and stand on ice - have no helmets.

Those poor blitzed sweepers...

I've got a scar on just under my lower lip from faceplaning off a cliff on a crazy carpet. I learned that day to get to the GT Sno-Racer first and plow the muthafarker who did that to me.. (my brother). thankfully a week later he broke both his arms while trying to jump over a drainage ditch. Best winter ever I tell you .. I had a lot of friends that winter.

/the spare GT SnoRacer helped I'm sure

tiiger 2007-01-28 10:06:49 PM
I think this is less of a 'Protect yourself' thing and more of a 'think about where you're doing it' thing.

Going down a clear hill on a toboggan is pretty safe, in fluffy snow.

Going down a tree infested hill/cliff on pack ice, with many 'jumps' added to it by your 'friends' including a memorable jump at the bottom that 'in theory' allows you to clear the two lane highway at the bottom of the hill, all while riding a death sled (Like a GT, but with thin metal runners that made it hit 88mph and leave flame trails behind it on concrete) may not be the safest thing in the world.

But damn if it wasn't fun!

Still shoulda worn a helmet though, thinking back to it. But again, it's common sense. Wear a helmet if you feel the need is there.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 10:06:58 PM
I bet that it doesn't take too many times of seeing kids with fractured skulls/backs etc. before you wish that helmets were mandatory.

That's the reason doctors should be forbidden from offering policy advice -- their experience is not remotely representative of society as a whole.

RyanWillia 2007-01-28 10:08:48 PM
Kids should only be allowed to play with sharp sticks.

If you don't like the odds, then make your kid wear a helmet. Don't get the goverment involved.

/would have used the helmet as projectile during sled warfare if required to have it on my person as a kid

Is wearing a helment actually a bad Idea when going downill on ice and snow with tree's possibly appearing left and right? I probably wouldn't need one but a 10 year old girl might. Meh,,, I guess kids aren't tough enough for some people.

oldebayer: I have a fifty three year old cousin who has been brain damaged since he was hit by a car while bicycling at age twelve. Poster-man for helmets.

You DO realize the limits on current bike helmets, right?

i.e. reduce the peak load to the head to less than 300g's in a fall from 2 meters. Basically, falling over while standing still. Or a 14mph impact.

Not much use against cars.

/btw...look up risk compensation

Mike__Hunt 2007-01-28 10:25:00 PM

Using your logic, it would also be much safer to wear a helmet when going big potty.... especially for 10 year old girls.

you farking pussy

In other news: probably all toboggan accidents result in broken legs from people sticking them out.

Alyna_jf 2007-01-28 10:25:22 PM
This is actually a good idea. This topic was actually discussed in TF a week or so ago. Someone said that the govt. has no right to make you protect yourself. (uh... ok). they believed that seatbelts should not be mandatory. WTF?!?!?

If it saves one noggin... its worth it IMO. its not a big inconvenience to put on a damn helmet.. it certainly doesn't make you a pussy.

My head would have been cracked open when I was 14 if I weren't wearing a helmet when I was tobogganing. I shattered my hip and permanently hurt my neck.. but at least I'm alive.

Oh... and lets say the govt. has no right to make you protect yourself. What about your kids? 90% of tobogganers are kids (I'm assuming)... so shouldn't it be the parents OBLIGATION to make sure their child is safe?

I'm not entirely how stupid you have to be to be angry about a recommendation. I'm pretty sure we could get all the nay-sayers to wear helmets just by having doctors recommend not wearing helments. I imagine that I would hear the chin-straps clicking across the greater united states in some infantile attempt to piss of those freedom-hating doctors who recommend stuff that might reduce your chance of being injured.

Its threads like this that devolve into more of an illustration that some adults still havn't overcome being prone to reserve phsychology rather than discussions about whether or not the merits of taking a huge hill on a toboggan without a helmet outweigh potentially not dying.

I remember skiing when I was young; nobody wore a helmet. Now, most people do. I don't, because its a recommendation but when you get mad at 'big brother' for recommending something, being angry is more a hobby to you than a valid exercise.

Remember the one time there was an uproar over the kids getting strangled by their jacket drawstrings as they went down slides, this ranks up there in retardedness.

Meh. The stupid kids off themselves and the species grows stronger.
