While not a fan of hunting myself, I don't have a problem with it per se. But, who the fark would want to shoot a wolf?

Little too close to shooting a dog for me.

Lionel Mandrake: But, who the fark would want to shoot a wolf?

Some people get off on hunting something dangerous, that could theoretically hunt them back.

This is the second time today I thought of "The Most Dangerous Game" story I read in high school.

Farmers aren't fond of them, they and coyotes like to eat barnyard animals.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 05:57:48 PM
But aren't ghay wolves endangered, by definition?

Oh, wait a minute, that headline says,

Never mind.

alienated 2007-01-28 05:57:58 PM
Very very bad to hunt Wolf.
Very bad.
Raven will get you if you do.

St_Francis_P: Farmers aren't fond of them, they and coyotes like to eat barnyard animals.

I understand that, but TFA is talking about opening them up for "trophy hunting." I'm not a hunter, but that doesn't sound like an industry term for "protecting livestock."

rose8199: Some people get off on hunting something dangerous, that could theoretically hunt them back.

Well, if the plan is to go out alone, with nothing but a sharpened rock, OK. Don't see much "danger" when accompanied by a pack of dogs and some other guys with rifles.

I agree with you, but nobody said it had to be fair.

doyner [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 06:04:55 PM
Truly sad. Now a large number of them are going to be marked for death if someone's livestock gets killed or if someone gets killed in the woods. Just like those 2 mountain lions that were shot because that old man got attacked--while walking in mountain lion habitat. I'm not saying they're more important than humans, but if we want to preserve these animals we need to decide that we assume some personal risk when we go traipsing into the forest.

You...have...NO...soul!

I'm declaring open season on you! The most dangerous prey of all...

I spent the first 1/4th of my life in an area with a lot of wild strays. It's stuck since then.

Back then, we never needed to worry about children getting kidnapped by perverts or anything like that. But we did have to worry about them getting mauled by wild dogs.

There's a big difference between wolves and packs of stray dogs.

You mean a dingo really DID eat someone's baby?!

Not to a 6 year old.

Lionel Mandrake: But, who the fark would want to shoot a wolf?

ask "Butch", the governor of Idaho. He's planning on being first in line for the great Idaho wolf shoot, the second they become unendangered. The plan is to shoot all but a 100 of them, because if the population drop below 100, they will go back on the endangered list, and all the hunters will have to go back to starting up anti-government militias.

rockforever 2007-01-28 07:22:17 PM
So why is this sad?

skinink 2007-01-28 07:23:29 PM
To be put on the 'Slightly Intimidated Species' list.

Not to a 6 year old.

You're right. We should kill them all to protect 6 year-olds that live close to them and aren't watched by their parents.

outback_rebel 2007-01-28 07:25:03 PM
If your dumbass gets eaten by a wolf, perhaps you shouldn't be in wolf territory.

AbsolutTBomb 2007-01-28 07:26:23 PM
Hey hunters, you want a trophy? How bout joining a bowling team.

studebaker hoch 2007-01-28 07:26:30 PM
I have no issue with wolves, however they are apex predators and that means you're in their food group.

So there I am saying "ssshhh, look honey, wolves, get the camera.."

The wolves are going "Those two idiot humans are still there. Keep standing here and look like you haven't noticed them, so the other pack can take them silently from behind"

doyner [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 07:26:31 PM

So why is this sad?

Because it will be legal to kill an animal that has a population of only 1200 or so.

Gerald Ford eaten by wolves today. He was delicious.

davebo 2007-01-28 07:29:47 PM
Seems premature to me, with the recent extinction of their natural prey . . .

TrevorP 2007-01-28 07:31:13 PM
I really don't see the attraction of hunting a wolf. I mean unless your gonna eat it or something it just seems like a waste of a good animal.

(NOT PETA AFFILIATED OR EVEN A VEGETARIAN)

kb7rky 2007-01-28 07:31:39 PM
If everyone here could only see the damage these vermin cause. I live in Idaho...I've seen it firsthand. Even the *FOREST SERVICE* is begging...BEGGING, I TELL YOU...to be allowed to carry high-powered firearms to stop the wolves.

I'll be fourth in line, behind Gov. Otter, my dad, and the Forest Service to get my wolf permit.

olddinosaur 2007-01-28 07:33:02 PM
So they used to be endangered, and now there's enough of them they aren't endangered any more; what's sad about that?

When I moved to Corpus Christi in 1974 I never saw a deer within city limits; these days I see them regularly, even though the city has grown and there are many more houses where brushland used to be.

That indicates there aren't enough predators thinning them out, and most wildlife experts agree with me.

Got wolf?

I bet thet biatch Little Red Riding Hood is behind it. Her and that creepy Peter kid. And we all know what those pigs are doing in that house.

totalsecurity 2007-01-28 07:37:46 PM
Watch. The idiots will shoot so many it goes back on the list in the Small States.

We're having a vote on stopping the aerial wolf hunting sickness, after we voted it down last time. Almost twice the number of people needed signed the petition.

Damn our bureacrats suck here.

tamarah 2007-01-28 07:38:14 PM
kb7rky, what kind of damage?

EggSniper 2007-01-28 07:40:35 PM
Wolves are cool.
Elk are dumb.
Either leave the wolves alone or do something with the elk to make them less dumb.

/Make them more extreme?

The Wolf Is Loose.

kb7rky 2007-01-28 07:42:22 PM
Try decimating wild elk herds, for one. I saw a fresh kill...blood still liquid, steam coming off the carcass...that was proven to have caused by a pack of wolves.

It wasn't a calf elk...this was a fully-grown bull elk that was killed.

The vet who was called in by the Forest Service determined the elk wasn't sick or injured (as a wolf pack is supposed to do).

outback_rebel 2007-01-28 07:42:39 PM
untrustworthy: If it isn't endangered anymore and the population gets too high then it's a good idea to open them up for possible hunting as necessary.

Just because there are enough of them that they aren't endangered any more doesn't mean that there are too many. Also, seeing as they were endangered for a while, their genes probably aren't too varied and thinning out the population even more is not going to help things.

outback_rebel 2007-01-28 07:43:57 PM
kb7rky: Try decimating wild elk herds, for one.

OMG! Animals doing what they've done for centuries! OH THE HUMANITY!

(as a wolf pack is supposed to do).

I wasn't aware they had hunting permits that limited the type of prey they could kill.

fred_chan 2007-01-28 07:44:28 PM
Here's how it works: make it okay to hunt wolves, but only with a wolf-hunting license. Make the sales of these licenses benefit the local communities where wolves live (i.e. community gets money for each sold license or something), giving them an incentive to not let poachers hunt the wolves into extinction.

/Profit!

craigzy 2007-01-28 07:44:53 PM
wolves only highway anyone?

studebaker hoch 2007-01-28 07:45:02 PM
We can't have wolves around people for the same reason we can't have grizzly bears around people.

Both think the other is a nuisance. It never works out.

"Some people get off on hunting something dangerous, that could theoretically hunt them back."

Theoretically, but in reality, wolves generally stay away from humans.

It's quite sad. They will be back on the endangered species list within 10 years.

Personally, I want one... alive, as a pet.

J-McFly 2007-01-28 07:46:31 PM
The endangered species act hasn't done jack anyway. If anything the act allows for big abuses of power.

willywanka 2007-01-28 07:47:18 PM
untrustworthy: What are you talking about? If it isn't endangered anymore and the population gets too high then it's a good idea to open them up for possible hunting as necessary.

because the goal posts to determine what level a population has to dip below to be considered endangered have been altered specifically to remove the animals from that endangered list. Its shifty as all hell. The rule is not to "make sure the population doesn't get too high" - its allowing them to be hunted right the point whereby the species faces elimination (down to 100 wolves, with 10 breeding pairs minimum, and hunting restrictions imposed if the pairs dip below 15). 100 wolves per state that would be going from 1,200 to 300 in the 3 Rocky Mountain States mentioned. That's not "thinning the pack", that is government-sponsored eradication. Its essentially revoking the Endangered Species Act.

jshine 2007-01-28 07:48:04 PM
If there are sufficient wolves (or any animal) in the wild, some percentage of them can be hunted without threatening the overall survival of the species. If that is the case here, what's the problem?

cegorach 2007-01-28 07:48:20 PM
Can't men just beat their wives to feel all masculine, rather than risking their lives at 800m aiming down the telescopic sight of a hunting rifle at an unsuspecting wolf that *might* kill them?

/pussies. you want to hunt, use a spear.

voxy 2007-01-28 07:48:34 PM
Shameful, makes me sick.

Campground Carl 2007-01-28 07:49:25 PM
Up here in North Idaho the hunters are all worked up into a froth over this. They're not allowed to shoot the incoming Californians, so they're ready to take out their frustrations on the wolves.

voxy 2007-01-28 07:50:17 PM
If only the bible had said something about being stewards of the animals and not killing things for fun.

jso2897 2007-01-28 07:50:24 PM
My earliest years were on a farm, and I have hunted both meat and chicken-killing pests, but I have to say that I've never seen any "sport" in hunting.
I mean, here I am, the smartest, meanest, most dangerous predator on the planet, equipped with binocular vision, a huge brain, opposable thumbs, and a 30.06 with a 5 shot mag. And me hunting a quadruped with a brain the size of a walnut is "sport"?
Not by my definition.
