Dead for Tax Reasons: what about the shropshire slasher?

Excellent Looney Tunes reference. I salute you.

(I'm also interested in how/why this was greenlit so fast.)

Sweet. Whatever it is, it'll just miss me.

"So what is this 'clipper system' that I reference? It's one of those little Canadian exports that's we tend to dislike during the winter months because it's usually associated with colder weather. It's a low pressure system, born on the Prairie Provinces east of the Canadian Rockies. The average clipper just "clips" the lower 48 by diving southeastward into the Dakotas and Minnesota before sliding into the Great Lakes. It's typically a fast moving system, and can produce snow, but amounts are usually light because it's hundreds of miles from a moisture source like the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic. It can produce heavy, lake effect snows across the Great Lakes as it pulls cold, arctic air over the warmer waters of the lakes.

Once in awhile, a clipper will cross the Appalachians and turn into a dreaded Nor'easter. It was a weak clipper that created the New England blizzard of 1978.

You'll typically hear me refer to a clipper as an Alberta Clipper, of course named for the province of its origination. But there is also the dreaded Manitoba Mauler as well as the Saskatchawan Screamer. Either of the three will make you grab for your heavy coat."

Even after all that I still don't know what the hell one is.
It's just bad, bad, bad, bad weather, folks.

As it turns out (according to http://www.crh.noaa.gov/sgf/?n=winter_checklist_paper) a Manitoba MAuler is similar to a Alberta Clipper or a Saskatchewan Screamer.

Didn't the Hulkster run wild on that Manitoba Mauler in Wrestlemania VII?

CornFedIowan: (I'm also interested in how/why this was greenlit so fast.)

1) It apparently was submitted and greenlit at the same time.

2) It's a weather forecast for Louisville, KY.

You figure out the rest.

insane_idoru 2007-01-28 04:05:22 PM
That sounds like a serial killer or something.

But them I remembered that it's from Canada, where everyone is too polite ot be serial killers.

they are MOST dangerous since the ONLY way a s/w can dive to the East Coast is to take on a negative tilt.

Manitoba Mauler.. interesting

I've lived in Manitoba most of my life and never heard of this expression.

It's quite annoying to think that American's blame all their cold weather on Canada. "Cold front moving in from Canada" you know what, it comes from the damn Arctic. Deal with it. We do. As if it's somehow our fault. Darn those Canadians for letting terrorists and cold weather cross into our freedom loving borders. Socialist Commie bastards!

That said its only -20 outside right now. Not too bad, and its almost February already.

Manitoba Maulers.. not a bad name for a hockey team.

Or perhaps the NOAA sponsored this link...

Not obscure, but still funny.

Had a professor referring to something as 100,000 (or maybe 100,000,000) degrees or something like that (very high temp). Someone asked if that was Celcius or Kelvin. His response "Kelv...Celc...um, ..... IT DOESNT MATTER!"

I once had a Saskatchewan Screamer at a bar. I think it involved rum and vodka mixed with a half-and-half of Labatt's and Molson.

North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin can get pretty chilly. I've seen -40F a few times in northern MN. I remember one time in particular. I bought a car from my grandfather in Bemidji MN and being young, stupid, and impatient, I decided to pick it up in mid-January. The car had been in storage for 10 years so there was some work to do. As it turned out, the highs for the couple of days I was there were -30's.

I ended up spending an entire day getting her running ('66 Buick). It needed all the usual after sitting for 10 years. New belts and hoses, turning the engine manually to move some oil, oil in the spark plug holes etc and lots of starter fluid. It was a 9am-4pm endeavor, all outside.

I was fine with it, and so was my 70 something grandfather who stood out there with me the whole time and never even shivered. (he was a logger in his youth)
