(First Coast News) Florida Guy hired drug addicts and homeless people at minimum wages and then sold them crack and beer at inflated prices. Apparently he was unaware he shouldn't do that   (firstcoastnews.com) divider line 41

Just like the Company Towns in the good ol' days.

Evans' two labor camps in East Palatka and North Carolina, have been forfeited to the government, and he and his wife, Jequita, a co-defendant, must also hand over one-point-one million dollars.

The government don't like it when you horn in on their drug business.

Doping your workers up is perfectly fine, but you've got to pay your taxes, make sure that you use the government approved drugs and slide your local politicans a healthy 'campaign donation' from time to time.

Ah, yes, the American South. With its fine old hallowed institutions, like labor camps. Something not normally seen in the rest of the USA.

Why bother to adhere to minimum wage laws when you're selling crack? If you're going to break the law, go all-out!

Florida IS NOT typically southern.

IT is parts of NY and Cuba that broke off and re-attached there.

Sounds like a pretty good business plan to me!

Welcome to the Machine...."Florida IS NOT typically southern"

Actually, the northern sections of Florida are very, very Southern. I lived in Jacksonville for a couple of years and can tell you that there are areas there (Palatka being one of them) that are more "Southern" than my home state of SC.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As soon as you get out of sight of the ocean, most of the state turns into Alabama.

You apparently haven't been to the northern 3/4 of the state, or have only been to the heavily tourist areas.

Ya know... take out the crack and he is onto something! Open the migrant camps way out in nowhere, and put a convenience store there. Markup the beer and smokes and profit! Brilliant!

I still don't understand why they haven't greenlit the Florida night of the living duck story.

I bet this man sold the duck the PCP that kept him alive for two days in a refirgerator.

On television news station websites, you're often reading the same copy that's read by the on-air talent. TV news has its own stylebook, just like newspapers and magazines. Sometimes they hire web editors to translate those stories to article format, but oftentimes it's much cheaper to post them exactly as written by the reporters.

Brilliant? Bullshiat! Try "old school." Company Towns were common in years past - "here's your 'paycheck'...you can only redeem it at the company store!" Where everything was overpriced, of course.

It's a way of actually paying your employees less. And encouraging them to go into debt. To their employer. Brilliantly evil, perhaps.

I did not know that. Now it makes sense. Keeps the news guy from saying 11 million if doesn't spot the decimal in 1.1

One of my first memories that is seared into my head is of watching a movie about the Oakies. (It might have been the Grapes of Wrath but I'm not sure.) A family moves to California for work and the father is thrilled at getting a job and providing for his family. He's busting ass all week picking crates of fruit and bringing them to the foreman to tally. On payday he thinks he's going to get mad cash but the foreman deducts everything, housing, clothing, food, air and they end up owing THEM money.

I started crying (it still brings a tear to my eye) and my mom had to explain that such things did indeed happen but it doesn't happen so much anymore and those were bad owners and they were going to hell.

/My introduction to injustice.
//Probably explains my pessimism.
///I hope these bastards go to hell--if there is such a place.

Okay. This article might be my favorite thing that I've ever read on Fark. This is truly a classic situation with infinite comic potential. It even has the Florida tag! I think my head just exploded.

Tiiba 2007-01-29 02:56:10 PM
The fact that the northern part of Florida is southern is kinda creepy.

poot_rootbeer 2007-01-29 03:14:13 PM
oftentimes it's much cheaper to post them exactly as written by the reporters.

I'm more troubled by the idea that the on-air talent wouldn't know how to speak "$1.1 million" if it had been written that way.

"...ordered to pay dollar-sign one dot one million..."
