the most popular choice for firefighters and police officers was an Apprentice Pirate

I know a lot of cops and firemen, and I have never heard any of them say they wanted to be a pirate.

As long as that 20% are taking all the Arby's jobs, I don't see how I can get my dream job there.

gradatim 2007-01-28 04:46:56 PM
There is no dream job. Every job you ever have will suck, for one reason or another. Either it won't pay well or you'll have an asshole coworker (or boss) or you'll have a long list of shiatty things that you'll have to do. If you're lucky enough to find a job free of all that unpleasantness, then others will spoil it for you by constantly trying to take it away from you. So give it up. Just do whatever wage-slave bullshiat job you've been shackled with, and then die. That's your destiny. Might as well accept it.

Neurochemist 2007-01-28 04:50:13 PM
Welp. I decided long ago that I pretty much hate all work equally and don't have the patience to work myself into anything I would consider "my dream job".

So I took the job that maximizes benefits and requires the least amount of work.

My generation (20-30) are living with their heads up their asses. Every other one wants to be either a singer, actor or sports star (but have little talent) or a doctor, lawyer, accountant or engineer (and have 0 work ethic). We are the Disney generation: "Follow your dreams, you can do anything if you set your mind to it." And "Always keep looking for your dream job".

jwrebholz 2007-01-28 04:51:00 PM
I gave up on a dream job. I just want something that'll pay my bills and allow me to someday retire.

Next time my company is looking for a motivational speaker, I know who I'm going to call.

Or you can have a job you love but still have to live in mom's basement and get a side-job at Arby's because the pay sucks.

Everyone: Give up! You're never going to get your dream job. STFU and GBTW at Wal-Mart / department of public works / your drab, meaningless "Fight Club"-style office job.

Damn. I know I'm young and idealistic, but I hope I'm never that bitter. I could work at a community newspaper in some small town and be happy. Or teach classes at a crap-ass community college. I'm not that picky, but I'm not going to work wage-slave jobs my whole life either.

FTA: "...They are followed closely by teachers (32 percent), real estate professionals (28 percent) and engineers (25 percent)."

Funny, I work with real estate "professionals," and while they may love their jobs, they sure as hel make life miserable for their support staff. Maybe making six figures with little more than a high school education makes them happy, or maybe it's the way they can treat their staff (who do most of the actual work) like absolute shiat (like calling us at home on Saturday morning, when we are suffering a mind-splitting hangover, to scream at us that the phone number printed on their yard sign is their office number and not their cell number... as happened to me yesterday!)

The other funny thing is that a lot of realtors got into the business after giving up teaching for the lure of easy money. Those must be the other 68% of teachers who checked "farking lothe my job" on this survey.

/bitter

I don't think people who want to work at theme parks have thought that through. After an hour of acting like a dickhead on the same ride, Disney would have to dispatch several Harvey Keitels to clean up the incident.

The fact that there is such a thing as a "dream job" is one of the things farked up about today's America. People used to dream about financial independence, where they could live a full life without having to work. Now we accept a life of wage slavery as given, and simply look for a different flavor of slavery?

I work in construction. I ended up in the field after the dot com bubble burst. I have come to like working in this field very much, for a few reasons.

-I get to see tangible results for what I've put the effort into.

-I get to use my mind and creativity to help people better their home environments.

-I make decent, if not fantastic money.

-I work under one other person, who treats me well. I can work independently and make a little more.

Most days I'm tired and/or covered in filth. Sometimes I crawl around in basements. Sometimes I have to deal with heavy smelly dirty objects and substances, but when I consider the above and the fact that having everything exactly the way you like it gets boring quickly, I find I am pretty content.

I wouldn't call it a dream job but knowing how many people out there are genuinely miserable, I know that I am closer than most.

By a strange turn of events, what started as a work from home proofreading job somehow turned into as close to a dream job as I could get. [The real dream is to never have to work at all].

But it's weird being in that situation where you don't really HATE your job. I just hate getting up in the morning because I'm an insomniac. I've also ended up being on Fark more during the night/weekend since I actually work... at work... because I don't hate it.

TheGreenMonkey 2007-01-28 05:32:50 PM
I don't know, my job is not so bad. Just pays crappy as hell.

Sit at a desk and check email, deliver equipment when needed, go back to desk and peruse Fark, pick up equipment when needed, go back to reading Fark while sitting at desk, decide to change it up a bit so play video games while sitting at desk watching TV, change light bulb in a projector of some sort, enter a few reservations for equipment, go home.

Oh yeah, forgot to include: study if needed, and look for another job that pays better while allowing me to goof off as much. Look, I'm all for working hard and doing what's needed to get the job done but too many times what is required is stupid and totally unnecessary yet nobody wants to listen better ideas.

So fark all that nonsense about working hard to get ahead, it's just not true as far as I can tell. And incompetence is what seems to get most people ahead at least in my experience. Doesn't matter how much education or knowledge about the job one actually has, fark up a few times and that will get one promoted.

Work smarter, not harder.

I'm one week away from my last day at this job, and I'm thrilled. I'm going to be poor, but I'm going to be studying a post grad dip in journalism. Something vaguely worthwhile.

It mightn't be my ideal job of 'rock star', but hey.
