There's a last name you can use in a limerick.

No, no... that was "Crow."

Huckabee seems like a decent guy. I have one of his books.

He's a nice guy. I've met him a few times over the years.

hillbillypharmacist [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 11:05:33 AM
He's fairly into public health policy, which is good.

However, he's not a rabid antitaxite, which makes him unelectable as a Republican.

Plus, when he left the governor's office a couple weeks ago, he spent up every penny of the emergency fund having every hard drive in his office professionally crushed.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 11:22:36 AM
Huckabee won two full terms in landslides. He championed tax increases...

He'll be lucky if the GOP primary voters don't lynch him.

Let's see..Huckabee...Huckabee...oh yeah - the guy who, on the satirical comedy special "Talking to Americans", congratulated the Canadian government for building a dome over its 'national igloo' (ostensibly a downsized version of the United States Capitol made out of ice) to protect it from global warming.

Not as bad a Tom Vilsack - also running for president. On the same show, he actually congratulated Canadians for adopting the 24 hour clock in place of the current 20 hour version.

CheekyMunky [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 11:51:30 AM
I've seen Huckabee in a few interviews. Aside from seeming like a nice guy with an easygoing sense of humor, he also seems to be able to sit down with people with differing views and have a frank, civil, productive discussion with them, something that is sorely lacking in today's politics.

mistersite 2007-01-28 12:14:11 PM
As a Democrat, I think Huckabee might be the most dangerous candidate in the GOP race. We could beat Giuliani (the Theocratic Right sits on their hands), McCain (many rank-and-file GOP don't like him), Romney (evangelicals won't vote for a Mormon, and his MA record wasn't stellar), Brownback (theocratic nutjob), Tancredo (just plain nutjob), or Hunter (see Tancredo).

Huckabee has the charisma to appeal to moderates and the credentials to appeal to the rightward ends, and unlike all the GOP potentials in the federal government he doesn't have the millstone of Iraq around his neck. Plus, he's from the same state and same hometown as Bill Clinton - a lot of GOP faithful would like payback for suffering eight years of peace and prosperity under a Democratic President.

mistersite: a lot of GOP faithful would like payback for suffering eight years of peace and prosperity under a Democratic President.

They've gotten 6 years of corrupt, Constitution-shredding, secretive, war-mongering incompetence - with two more to go! Isn't that enough payback?

Nope. They want someone who's going to retroactively impeach Clinton and punish him for winning elections and being more popular at his lowest than the current occupant is now. I've been to the right-wing sites and seen the intensity with which they hate Bill Clinton; that hatred hasn't cooled down in six years, and it's probably not going to by 2008. They just can't stand the fact that one of this nation's most prosperous periods occurred while a Democrat was President, and then when one of their own took over it all went to hell.

/b-b-b-but Clinton!

But the good years were all do to the things done by the first Bush before he left office, and the bad things over the last 6 years are because of what Clinton did before he left office!!1!!11!

/I go to those sites, also.

Why? The guy let out a convicted rapist who went on to rape and murder someone in MO (Willie Horton style). His wife created a "wedding registry" for their "honeymoon" and got campaign contributors to give them gifts - even though it was after their wedding.

The CATO Institute gave him an "F" on fiscal responsibility.

This guy has plenty of skeletons in his closet. The only reason people think he's a good candidate is that he's a governor and he's no longer fat.

Gecko Gingrich [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 01:23:31 PM
LocalCynic: even though it was after their wedding

The proper period for wedding gift giving extends to a year after the actual wedding.

From The WaPo:

The Huckabees married in 1974. They entered into a covenant marriage in February 2005.

Huckabee's a good guy. He's probably the only Republican I'd consider voting for.

/ Huckabee vs. Richardson = a win-win for the US
// It'll be McCain vs. Hillary because the two parties' loyalists are too stupid to nominate their best candidates.

arkansas [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 02:46:04 PM
1) Not a religious nut-job at all
2) Is a "food policeman" now like Bloomberg
3) Thinks everyone should run marathons now since he does
4) Arkansas education ranking improved from 49 to 29
5) Like free gifts, free doo-dads, and crushing government hard-drives
6) A couple of years ago started acting like Clinton and reversed course on lots of stuff...wonder why?
7) Very pro-illegal immigrant
8) Was very steady during crisis at start of his term
9) Was very steady and rational during 9/11
10) Opened the doors of Arkansas for Katrina refugees and spent a lot of money and effort taking care of them
11) Writes a lot of thin trade paperbacks telling us how to be better like him
12) Way soft-hearted in the are of pardoning criminals. If you got on a Governor's Mansion work-detail you were golden for getting out early apparently.

So there ya go....a big fat mixed bag of telling people what they want to hear, mixed with some leadership, mixed with flip-floppy, mixed with weepy do-gooderism. He is definitely a politician and will change course when need be. They said Clinton had no firm inner core....must be in the water.

I don't know what to tell you. He will probably frustrate everyone on both sides if elected by not being ideological on some things and ideological on one side, and then ideological on the other.

I suspect a Vice-Presidential bid in the end.

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 02:48:47 PM
How the Huckabee administration worked hard to free serial rapist Wayne Dumond.

Now why would he become involved in a case like this in the first place? Follow the money I always say.

Emerson999 2007-01-28 02:54:13 PM
Joementum: It'll be McCain vs. Hillary because the two parties' loyalists are too stupid to nominate their best candidates.

I can almost hear the condemnation from the press at the inevitable low turnout from a choice between those two. At least my first election while back in the US could give me a return to 3rd party votes of "fark you" to the major parties.

This is the same guy who on Canadian TV was quite happy to share his knowledge about the fact that all Canadians live in igloos all year round and the Canadian national capital building was made out of ice.

"I'd like to congratulate Canada on saving their national igloo...."

This guy makes Bush look like a brilliant international statesman..
