More violent? You mean they weren't always getting into knife fights over stolen boyfriends?

Why do men love to watch women fight?

Because they might kiss.

Ah, that good ole availability heuristic.

You are three times more likely to die from a lightning strike than from school violence, for instance. But you don't see people saying, "Look at this disturbing trend of lightning!" When you have such a low baseline, anything will look like a "trend."

He lists plenty of reasons why this is happening: the breakdown of the family, the decline of the church and the natural evolution of the women's liberation movement, which began in the 1960s and now encourages girls to be as aggressive as boys.

He and others are also big on blaming the entertainment industry for featuring "violent femmes" in action roles, such as gun-toting Lara Croft and sword-wielding Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill."

Even the highbrow heroine of the Harry Potter books, Hermione Granger, punches a boy and says, "Boy, that felt good."

I see that we're blaming the usual suspects: decline in the family and church, women's lib, entertainment, and Harry Potter. I knew that biatch Hermione had something to do with society's decline.

Why do men love to watch women fight?

Because the fight might become a non-consensual striptease.

they haven't -- or at least that there's no data to support that they have

They just "get off" more, because they start crying or wiggling their little butts around or showing some cleavage. The cop sees that and thinks stuff like, "Aw, how cute!" or "Hey, maybe I can get some ass later if I let her go!" And then she's off, free and clear. Even if it does go as far as the court, they just do the same stuff for the prosecutor, judge and jury.

Um, no. Basically the rates just aren't very high, as they said.

"'This way she gonna see herself in the mirror every day and remember what I did to her,' said one of the girls, named Lakeesha."

"'I think it's largely an inner-city phenomenon,'" - "...blaming the entertainment industry for featuring "violent femmes" in action roles, such as gun-toting Lara Croft and sword-wielding Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill."

how many black girls play tomb raider or watch campy 70's kung foo movies?

"But it's been going on for a long time in the African-American community." THATS RACIST!!

Girls don't fart.

firefly212 2007-01-28 12:17:18 PM
On the surface of things, the story is self conflicting:

While the rate for boys declined 26 percent between 1980 and 2003, the female rate jumped 47 percent. Between those years, female assault arrests rose from about 200 for every 100,000 girls to 750.

So the rate at which females are being arrested for assaults is up.

Some analysts and media reports cite that fact in saying the "gender gap" between boys and girls is closing. Authors such as Mr. Garbarino have seized on it to bolster their contention that girls are becoming more violent.

He lists plenty of reasons why this is happening: the breakdown of the family, the decline of the church and the natural evolution of the women's liberation movement, which began in the 1960s and now encourages girls to be as aggressive as boys.

But we have reasons for the increase, so there must not be an increase... wait, what... I see what you did there.

Article is BS

There seems to be a fine line nowadays between so-called "racism" and stating the blazingly obvious...

Harry Potter makes girls violent, children become satan worshippers, parents become lazy, boys become liars, students become rule-breakers, and immortal wizards still mumbling that they totally would've gotten away with it if weren't for those meddling kids.

God, those books are powerful.

As far as I can tell, the article is saying
Women are not getting more violent. They always have been violent, we just didn't like to talk about it before"

nobodyUwannaknow 2007-01-28 04:45:20 PM
no mention of the cyclical incidence of female violence or a study relating it to hormonal cycles?

j0ndas 2007-01-28 07:13:25 PM
Female violence is increasing, the article only says that there isn't "conclusive evidence". What that really means is that the current agenda is for women to be shown as "good" and men to be shown as "bad", and anything that disagrees with that is conveniently ignored.

While men will always be more violent overall due to their greater strength and higher aggression, female violence as a percentage of total violence is probably increasing. This is due to all the mannish women stereotypes you see in TV and movies these days - women soldiers, women boxers, women martial artists, women beating men at this, that, and the other thing. Look at all the movies with women killing people made just in the past few years, and then look at how many of those women are portrayed as being on the side of good. Quite a few. Women are being told that it's ok to be violent, and given their greater potential for fighting among themselves (watch any reality TV show...), it's not surprising that female violence is increasing.

mrGQ 2007-01-28 11:53:52 PM
Women are just as violent as men are. Concerning domestic violence against men, it often goes ignored or unreported.

http://www.oregoncounseling.org/Handouts/DomesticViolenceMen.htm

Unfortunately, men face shame from society for being battered and abused by a women. Even more unfortunate is when men do report violence it mostly goes ignored. Also, men do not have the same resouces for help that women do. When was the last time you heard of a battered mens shelter?

tonesskin: When you have such a low baseline, anything will look like a "trend."

Yes! The media storm over Shark attacks prior to 9/11 should reveal everything one needs to realize about the "news" media, meh.

Another was the increase in violence against women during the Super Bowl. That was a good one.

I personally have been working out the past two months for the beating I'll be giving out this year.

/no news today?
//just invent it!

country_boy 2007-01-29 01:16:11 AM
j0ndas: violence is increasing

At least the reporting of it is. I wonder how much is caused by the media's attention to the subject over the years. I'm still skeptical though.
