Registration is required, but this is probably the same story without it.

http://www.newsobserver.com/643/story/537175.html

The main living section of the house is 10,778 square feet and has a tax value of $3.1 million, according to tax records. It has five bedrooms, 6 1/2 baths and a library. A second wing of the house is connected by a heated enclosed walkway, valued at $192,664, that is lined with family and political photographs.

The second wing, called "The Barn" by the family, has 6,336 square feet and includes a lounge and offices that are 70 percent complete. It has a current tax value of $567,403. It also has a basketball court, which is 60 percent complete and valued at $300,960; a racquetball court, 70 percent complete and valued at $41,000; and a pool, according to tax records. She said that there is nothing "grandiose" about the house and that it was designed to be a functional home with room for her children to play outdoors and a large kitchen to entertain friends and family.

I botched that second quoted paragraph, but you get the idea.
Sometimes I wish we had an edit feature like Democratic Underground.

"This house is a truly fabulous family home," she said. "The house has one fireplace, no grand staircase. It's not unlike our lives in smaller quarters for over 30 years."

Except for the extra 20,000 square feet. Suck it up and admit it's a big house. It's okay, you're allowed to have a big home.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 07:54:59 AM
What the hell? Is he expected to sell everything and give it to the poor? Otherwise he doesn't really care about poverty?

Well, then, Bush and all his "Christian" followers must do the same, or they aren't really Christians.

nukeim 2007-01-28 07:55:09 AM
He's a self-made millionaire. Is he supposed to live next door to me before he runs for president?

And I mean c'mon...Crawford Ranch isn't exactly your average weekend getaway cabin either.

Not that I give two sh*ts about the guy...But talk about a pointless attack.

I_Can't_Believe_it's_not_Boutros 2007-01-28 07:56:12 AM
Politics aside--I've just always found him a bit creepy, personally--it's hard to imagine what kind of petty assholes worry about the house someone else lives in.

Did he make the money legally? Did he pay for the land and did he pay someone to build the house?

Then who the fark cares?

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 07:56:57 AM

I agree. Cut the false modesty and the "it's not really that excessive" attitude and simply admit it.

I don't like Edwards. He has that insincere, unnecessarily dramatic tv-personal-injury-lawyer fake drawl that irks the hell out of me. The size of SmileyMansion, however, is irrelevant. People can live how they please.

IPingUPing [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 07:59:29 AM
I'd still like to know why a guy like this wants to spend so much money for a job that pays $400K a year. So he can spend my money too?

Descartes 2007-01-28 08:06:40 AM
I think it's the false modesty that sets people off.

Saying it's not "grandiose" when it obviously is.

Let's just pray there are no quotes of him saying "I'm just like you" out there.

m0llusk: It was cooler when they built pyramids.

Yup. And even cooler when they built theaters, forums, aqueducts, roads, and sewage systems.

His money, though.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 08:14:03 AM
I'll take a bit of false modesty over an AWOL silver-spooner pretending to be blue collar, brush-clearing fighter pilot.

Not that being an Edwards detractor automatically makes one a Bush supporter, but in my experience, the categories overlap quite a bit.

Mordant [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 08:16:12 AM
According to your version of the American Way you should be ready to have something similar if not even more impressive in a few years. Just make sure you hate the dems and worship anyone with an (R) next to their name and it's pretty much a lock.

It's got you this far.

crunch-o-matic 2007-01-28 08:22:54 AM
The only way I would know he cares about me would be if his possessions fit in a milk crate.

Pffft. People with money buy things, I don't care how big his house is.

Unless your penis is small, why should you?

Yanks_RSJ 2007-01-28 08:27:32 AM
Can't wait for that patronizing "I feel your pain" squint and grimace on the campaign trail. Very believable, that's what I like about it.

Frankly, I don't care what house he lives in. But I also don't want to hear about the "party of the rich" crap about Republicans, because lets face it, every politician is rich.

If they weren't, they'd actually have to get a real job.

Finnley Wren 2007-01-28 08:29:55 AM
Seems to be a theme among Democrats. Massachusett's newly elected governor is building a 24-room, 10,000-square foot vacation home on 77 acres in the Berkshires.

Audacious, indeed.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 08:33:43 AM
Meh. I think the way he made his money is disgusting, but I won't begrudge anyone who's made their money just because they buy a nice house. Who wouldn't do the same?

I sure as hell won't vote for him, "conservatives" and...snicker... "Libertarians"...snicker... both hate him for some reason.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 08:44:30 AM
Mordant: Libertarians

Yes, we do.

There are a lot of fake libertarians. There are also a lot of very sincere ones.

Oh, and learn the distinction. "Libertarians" is not comparable to "conservatives". That would be "libertarians". A "Libertarian" is a member of the LP, just like a Republican or Democrat.

It's an important distinction.

Mordant [TotalFark] 2007-01-28 08:47:49 AM
Churchill2004: That would be "libertarians". A "Libertarian" is a member of the LP, just like a Republican or Democrat.

I'll remember that, I do respect the real members of the party who actually stand for something other than just mindless hatred of "Libs". We already have one hijacked party to cover that idiotic BS.

I hear Edwards installed an indoor running track with its own miniature ambulance for him to chase all day.

Actually, most "small l's" are just as anti-two party as the big-L's. They dislike the LP for a variety of reasons, most of them because they dislike partisanship in general.

I consider myself a "small-l". I like the LP, but I don't want to identify as a member of any party. Though it doesn't quite mean the same, it smacks of straight-ticket voting.

I dislike the GOP and the Dems, but I'll vote for a good person (i.e., one with libertarian positions) that runs as a member of either. That's what most "small-l's" are.

For example, I despise what the GOP has done in the past six years, but I wholeheartedly support Ron Paul for President.

All the fake "l/Libertarians" are really starting to piss me off.

I don't have any problem with lawyers in general, just ambulance chasers.

Well, not just ambulance chasers, but any of their ilk that encourage the "sue over everything" mentality.

I bet he has a firm grasp on the housing plight of the working poor.

Thankfully Bush can't run again and we won't be faced with that dilemna. If Edwards gets the not from the Dems, I think the only candidate the Republicans could put up that might incline me to vote for Edwards would be Pol Pot, and even then, I still might vote for Pol Pot because he's dead. That silk-tongued shyster was what drove me to vote third party in 2004, and even my mom, a life-long yellow dog Democrat voted third party because she couldn't stand Edwards. (Of course, being that she lives in South Carolina, that was more or less a symbolic gesture.)
